  1. I've made my decision too! I'll be at the University of Kansas this fall!
  2. Congratulations! Indiana has a great program!
  3. I had been waitlisted by the University of Toronto, but received notice this morning that I'd been accepted! I can't believe it! Eidda, I haven't had a chance to visit Bloomington, but did make it up to KU last week. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about the program there.
  4. I hope to visit both Indiana and Kansas next week (my spring break). I will keep you posted.
  5. Waitlisted at Toronto. It looks like I will be in Lawrence, Columbus, or Bloomington in the fall. Now to make some campus visits!
  6. I did see that. I guess in this case, no news is good news?
  7. I also got accepted to Washington, but wasn't offered any funding. But that's okay, since I wasn't considering it very strongly (too far from home in New York, mostly). I just want to hear from Toronto. I haven't heard anything at all from that program.
  8. I'm planning on the Slavic Linguistics track. My main interest is in functional-typological approaches to Slavic aspect, but I'm also interested in bilingualism, grammatical semantics, and language acquisition. What about you, maceochi? What areas of Slavic studies are you most interested in?
  9. The University of Washington asked me to take a written Russian proficiency exam (four pages, two hours). One of my current professors proctored it and mailed it back. Two of my letter-writers are Russian professors, and like you I trust them to convey my abilities in the language.
  10. I don't believe so. I've been accepted to two schools so far and neither interviewed me.
  11. You must have interviewed immediately after me! I was very happy that mine went well. I always worry that I'm at a disadvantage because I haven't been to Russia, or spent time in a Russian-speaking area, but I think I did fine anyway.
  12. Got asked to do a phone interview next week! (20-30 minutes in Russian? Gulp...)
  13. I just submitted my own FLAS applications. My FLAS statement and the statement of purpose I submitted with my graduate application covered the same topics, but I tried to write the FLAS statement from a slightly different perspective: I went into more detail about the personal significance of the target language to me (since it's my heritage language). I didn't describe my research interests in as much detail as I did in my SOP, because I figure that a FLAS statement will be read by a wider audience than the specialists in the department I applied to. Instead, I concentrated more on summarizing my interests and relating them to a more general academic discourse. I also articulated several specific ways in which my research will benefit from knowledge of the FLAS language. I didn't copy-paste anything from my SOP; I wrote a new FLAS statement. I figure that if there is any overlap between the FLAS committee and the admissions committee, those individuals will just get to gain an even better understanding of my background and academic goals.
  14. Congrats! I heard from Indiana yesterday too!
