  1. I have been thinking about it too. Still don't know.
  2. Yes, contact them. You have waited long enough.
  3. Hi! What is the 'results page'? People keep referring to that but I have no idea what's page it is

  5. Decease instead of disease - in two SOPs of my apps. And that was after proofreading by three academic people.
  6. Could you please check your application status at https://www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp/Login.asp?topage=AdmissionStatus.asp ? I am wondering, what is in the Application Status column. Is it different from Submitted? All, who applied to UCLA, please also check the status. Mine is Submitted and I don't know what that means. I suppose that it was not even opened yet. But what do I know?
  7. That's good plans. Actually really good. Well, I think that you are just not sure if PhD is for you. Is that right? Well, if you are admitted - just try it and you will find out. It's your life. Yours. And the only. So - just look, try, find what is yours. And be happy
  8. I think that applied mathematics with focus on neuroscience and/or computational neuroscience would be winners here as they give you the Tools, with help of which you could deal with any kind of neuroscience problems. I consider it a universal education because you would not need to be stuck only with one type of the science. What do you think?
  9. It's not my first time I included all the costs: GRE, GRE subject, correspondence from my country to US (official transcripts), application fees, ordering transcripts from three schools. Also I had to pay $2100 similar to Loric. I included that too.
  10. Well, I was the best student in my undergrad and then Master's program in theoretical physics. I received a number of local honor scholarships, and had a number of publications starting while I was an undergraduate student. I was assigned to teach grad classes when I was a grad myself. But I was sure that I am fraud. Too bad I did not know anything about the syndrome back then because I felt really bad. However at some point I figured what was causing me such pain - I just did not like physics, and did not want to do physics all my life. When I could admit that I dropped out from a grad school (PhD), and went to the industry meanwhile trying to figure it out what I would love to do. I figured that. And now I am banging the doors to my happiness - to attain a profession that is so interesting for me. So... the question is - do you really want to do what you do right now?
  11. Thanks for letting know. A year ago it was corresponding Saturday and Monday. This year they decided to do it one day earlier. When did you receive your call? (And time zone please).
  12. In my application files, the way the committee sees it too, I can see what is the most important for each school I apply. For example, 1. International/domestic. (Supposedly, they go to different folders and then go through the following process separately). 2. Female/male (I suppose also get separated to keep the balance). 3. GPA. 4. GRE scores. 5. Recommendations. 6. Awards, publications, work experience. and at the very end - SOP, CV and other stuff. And it's like that for almost for all of them. Well, it makes sense to me. So it seems that the most important factor is GPA. Also I really hope that they do it with the grading system, which Loric mentioned. It seems fair then.
  13. The name means "the Sun" in Russian. In Russian that is Солнце. This is how my dad used to call me when I was little. Also I wanted to make it obvious to people here on forum, who know Russian, that I at least know Russian No avatar yet. Too nervous because of the admission process. Or simply did not find it yet.
  14. I agree. And all the forum is also good and bad. On one hand you know, when you can stop waiting, and on the other - it's an awful feeling to see how other people get into your chosen schools.
  15. Wow. I thought it was only me who have been having such troubles.
  16. Hi, pravnik. Yes, I'm from Russia. Where are you from? "Pravnik" sounds slavic too. Anyway, I applied to different from you universities. In December there supposed to be something from Emory (only if they choose to invite me). UCLA and University of Texas A&M, College Station send out their invites close to the middle of January. And I don't know the procedure at University of Minnesota. I'm also thinking about applying to some other schools as they have a later deadlines. But it's not for sure. So we are not in competition.)
  17. Hi everybody! emmanuel goldstein, Are you a local applicant or an international one? I have applied to Minnesota too, but have different interests. I wonder if there are more here who applied there too. (We talk about University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, right?) As far as I know, international applicants compete only amongst themselves. All departments have quotas - 1,2,3 - and they choose between the applicants.
  18. I agree with the No. If you are invited for an interview, than it's would be bad to Not contact. But now - it would not help. I would think that it could be even slightly irritating as there must be hundreds of such e-mails they get now. What is the point anyway? If your POI is in the committee than he/she has already the access to your file. If your POI is not in the committee, he/she does not have influence (and, I believe, simply interest) to the application process. Only if they would know you in person. If the POI is interested in anybody who would mention him/her in the statement of purpose then he/she would ask the committee to forward those files. As far as I know, usually firstly the committee decides who they want to invite then they pass the files to the potential POIs. And if you are invited it's better to arrange the meetings with your POIs. If it is a small program then all professors who are interested in students have access to all the files. All we can do now is to wait.
  19. I had a number of job interviews, and I doubt it would differ much. That's how I reply to 'Tell me about yourself'. I do it shortly as I would be answering a survey questions so it really saves time. If they want to clarify something, they'll ask. Just put the most beneficial for you stuff at the very end - people tend to remember and focus on the last what they've heard. 1. Name. How old. 2. When I graduated my colleges. How well I did. 3. Honors and accomplishments. (Listing). 4. What kind of research I was doing (just the titles and location with the names of co-authors). 5. Where I worked. What I've mastered at my jobs. 6. The skills you have, which you think are the best for your applying position. 7. And logically come to the summary and why you want to be enrolled in a phd program in general and the specific school in particular. It's not bad an idea to write everything down and practice. Good luck!
