  1. Notified of alternate status for dissertation fellowship on March 24. For other alternates: what field are you in?
  2. Out of curiosity, was your labmate on the HM list, too?
  3. Now that notifications are rolling out, would people mind stating the following: Country ETA or full? Recommended or not?
  4. Not to start a debate, but I profoundly disagree with the assertion that fashion is bourgeois. Fashion can actually be a profound tool in starting a revolution... Clothing is not just pieces of fabric sewn together, it can have profound meaning and can represent much more to the wearer and those around him/her. That's just my opinion, though...
  5. My husband is on board to an extent. He's planning on taking off as much time as possible to accompany my son and me, but it looks like it'll just be four months. We are not quite sure what we will do for the other two months. Needless to say, there's a little bit of apprehension in our household.
  6. I'm in my third year of a doctoral program. I'm trying to write a comps essay, but needless to say, I'm a little bit distracted.
  7. I feel like a bit of a nerd now. The tension's a little high, isn't it? I can't even sense sarcasm.
  8. I'm applying to France for a full grant. My project centers on the sapeurs of Congo-Brazzaville, the elegant dandies of central Africa. My work attempts to provide a historicization of the movement as a way of shifting the dialogue away from trivializing its followers as over-consumers that try to mimic the French. Rather, their form of ornamentation and exhibitions of fashion are deeply political and have long historical roots that pre-date colonialism. Essentially, it's less about the labels and more about how these bright suits are a way of inserting their voices in discussions that consistently rejected their voices in the colony and post-colony. I'm planning on working in the archives in France and conducting interviews to create an urban history of Brazzaville as a way of contextualizing the rise of the movement and how sapeurs navigated official and unofficial avenues of progress in the French Congo.
  9. No, it was for the travel website, TripAdvisor. Not affiliated with the Fulbright.
  10. I just re-read my previous posts and I think I might have come off as a little shallow and I'm really not. I just believe in putting your best foot forward because whether we like it or not, first impressions mean a lot in this world.
  11. Haha, like I said, I'm a fashion historian. I don't judge others on carrying a mismatched bag, though. Not going to lie, I'm using a red and blue striped L.L. Bean tote today that completely clashes with my mint cardigan, but it was cold and rainy this morning and I didn't want to risk ruining my electronics or any of my leather bags.
  12. I got that email too. Not going to lie, I thought the same thing!
  13. I once saw a student come to class without a shirt or shoes. He didn't appear to be homeless. I was baffled. I make an effort when I go to class- I iron a shirt, shower, do my hair and makeup, select a matching tote or satchel for the day... Is putting on appropriate classroom attire that hard for these kids? I'm a fashion historian, so maybe I'm just too nitpicky. I don't expect a runway show, just SOME effort. I'll settle for jeans, tees, and flip flops, but even that bar is too high for some, apparently. Rant over.
  14. I feel you. Luckily the class I TAed for today was VERY low maintenance. The professor had the class of fifty go around and do introductions... AGAIN. That was an hour well spent. I swear, if I hear another student say "I listen to all kinds of music and my hobby is hanging out," I think I'm going to punch myself in the face.
  15. Ok, I am now officially in freak-out mode.
  16. She was very kind and did not seem at all annoyed by the question that I am sure she receives multiple times a day!
  17. If you don't mind answering, do you have a child or are planning on having one? I'm curious to see how other people are juggling it all and plan to balance things while abroad.
  18. I spoke with Cara earlier today. She said Friday is the big day for everyone.
  19. I totally agree. If I weren't co-teaching a class, working on comprehensive exams, TAing for another class, and raising a baby, I would absolutely be stressing around the clock.
  20. ...and I just spoke to someone else and they definitively said that everyone will receive notifications this Friday. So... That being said, we will definitely hear in the next few weeks given the wide range of answers we are getting... hopefully sooner rather than later, though. I'm Danielle, by the way. Full grant applicant for France.
  21. No, he is listed as the contact for general inquiries and FPAs on the national website: http://us.fulbrightonline.org/contact-us
  22. Sorry to disappoint, but I spoke to Walter from the national office a few days ago and they said we will find out between the 20th and the 26th. I suppose abelian is an exception because the notification came from Finland rather than the US headquarters.
