  1. Ivan - I'm an alternate, too, and I haven't heard anything. I don't think I'll get it anyway though because UNC isn't teaching my level of Polish and that's the language I applied for. So I'm starting Russian instead (I think I'm going to enroll in the intensive levels at Duke). Hey cml - I worked with one of the professors in my region a lot as an undergrad and wanting to continue working with them was my main reasoning. Also, I like the size of the typical UNC group. They usually enroll at least 7-8, which is small but not so small that you feel as much pressure (not sure if that makes sense). I'm also not sure if I want to pursue a fully professional path or academic, and UNC makes it flexible to choose either. I hope that helps some! Good luck!
  2. IvanBezdomnii - I decided on UNC, so I guess I will see you in the fall! Have you heard anything about your FLAS alternate status, yet?
  3. I don't have much to give in terms of the faculty. I've only recently begun to study the region (in fact, just started in my senior year). Most of my interactions have been within the literature side of the Slavic department, which is mainly where my interests lie. Like most programs, there is a heavier emphasis on Russian studies, but luckily there are a few professors who specialize elsewhere. My interests are in post-1989 Poland and the effects on literature after the shift (pretty vague at the moment). One main draw for myself is the ability to take courses at Duke if there isn't something you're looking for in the current semester at Carolina. The two schools do a pretty good job of combining resources where needed. Chapel Hill is definitely a college town. It's kind of its on bubble between Raleigh and Durham, which is nice. The practically always warm weather is great, too. haha.
  4. I'm 90% sure I'm going to enroll at UNC. I did my undergrad there and I feel like it's a good fit for my interests. Mainly just waiting to hear about funding. And I really love Chapel Hill, so that makes my decision a lot easier.
  5. Awesome news! Duke is a pretty great program, in my opinion, because of the collaboration with UNC. If there's a course you want to take at Carolina, you can literally take a bus over to do so (they have a bus that is exactly for that purpose). A lot of times, try run their lesser studied language courses on separate cycles so one of the universities is always teaching intro and the other supplies upper level.
  6. What languages/regions are you guys planning to study?
  7. Hey cml471, I applied late January, too. Not sure of the exact date but it was before the Jan 31 FLAS deadline.
  8. Sorry to hear that karent. More waiting is definitely dreadful. I got into Illinois, but no word on funding yet; they said sometime in March for those decisions.
  9. I just heard today from UNC's MA program and I got in! No word on funding, yet. The waiting process is a little easier now that I know from at least one school!
  10. Beats me. I'm guessing that they just went through the FLAS applications today and paired them with MA applicants. But that's totally a guess, haha.
  11. I got an email from Illinois about missing FLAS items, too. I applied for one, but forgot a part of the application. It could be good news. I know the departments usually encourage applicants to apply for FLAS because most times it's the best source of funding.
  12. Congrats, Bizio! The next 2 to 3 weeks are going to go by so slowly. Waiting is painful, but most programs should notify by the end of Februray! That's somewhat comforting, at least.
  13. That's something good to know. Thanks! Yeah, I've looked around on the forums and haven't found a mention of their program, but when I was researching online I really liked the sound of the department and the faculty. I also didn't see anything for them on the results pages. I was tempted to email the department and ask about average decision times, but sometimes I hate being that person haha. I just get really anxious! I also only applied to two schools so I hope that doesn't come back to haunt me. Good luck to you! I hope we find out soon.
  14. Does anyone have any information on Illinois' REEEC MA? In terms of average decision dates and funding? It seems like that program isn't mentioned as much as some of the others.
