Just accepted my offer from GaTech! I'm planning on living on campus the first year, as I don't have the time or money to go to Atlanta and search around... also hoping to be in an environment with a lot of other like minded people. Anyone looking for a new acquaintance/friend?

UTexas (Austin) or The New School (NYC)?
korartiz replied to therainytype's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I also got into the New School's Media Studies program, but have taken the offer from GaTech and their Digital Media program instead. TNS is just too expensive. No assistantships for first years, subpar aid packages, and a meh program. I hope you decided on Austin! -
I still haven't heard from one school, but as it stands I'm deciding between these two programs. The subject areas that I would be covering are very similar. Here are some of my thoughts on each of them; but I'm wondering what you all think. UWM -- +/- POI very well known in area of interest. Other faculty I'm not so sure of. - English degrees aren't so great for finding employment. + Offered out-of-state waiver. + Significantly fewer students = more attention from faculty and much smaller classes. +? Funding potentially available at the end of April/in the summer. + One professor has shown a fair deal of interest in me and has stated that he'd offer me opportunities if they become available. + Milwaukee is relatively safe. GaTech -- + Well known program and faculty, many of which share interests with me. + Likely higher chance of employment upon graduation. - Many more students in the program. - Faculty appears to be busy with their own work and likely give the majority of their spare time to the PhDs. +/- Funding potentially available in the summer, but it's not guaranteed and otherwise up to me. +/- Out-of-state waivers available... trying to put my name forward, but am not getting a response from the program director. - High crime rate in Atlanta. My goal 2 years from now is to continue on to PhD study... so in either case, assuming I do well, I can apply to both schools again for PhD study. I'm just not sure what to do now. Honestly, the biggest factor to me is funding, as I have a fair amount of loans from undergrad and do not want to have to take out any more. It's rather frustrating that neither is offering it until AFTER they already want my intent to enroll. The same thing is happening with DePaul's New Media program. I'm thinking about putting in my deposits at both, but I'm not sure if a) I want to eat the $500+ and if they'd hate me for it when I said sorry midway through the summer. Thoughts?

I've been accepted to GaTech's Digital Media program and may very well be joining you all in the Fall!

Going for an unfunded MA - Now what?
korartiz replied to jpb2k5's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
At this point, I'd rather be in debt that be stuck working in a coffee shop or restaurant for another year+. The job market is ridiculous and I don't see me getting anything gainful without further employment. -
Anyone hear from UFlorida yet sans calling in?
-
Care to elaborate on some of the hot spots, RunMilW? I've looked at apartments on padmapper... seems like the cheapest near the school that I'm finding is around the 500 mark, but only if you have 2 other people living with you.

Bringing back this topic since I'm seriously considering UWM. I know NOTHING about the city. Anyone have anything they can share for 2013?

Someone in the acceptance thread posted about UFlorida getting rid of their MA program next year. This makes me sad. -

Congrats! This makes me really sad, though. I was really hoping for their MA program. I haven't had the heart to call in and find out my status though. -

And that's exactly how I feel. -
If I get absolutely no funding for any of the MA programs I applied for... my Plan B is to move back to where my alma mater is... find a shitty job, and work my way through a part time CompSci BS.

Just got the same today and the first school that I've received funding info on. No funding. Sigh. Is it weird that that stings more than my only rejection so far? -

MA admits. Did you receive a second letter about funding separate from the Dean's letter? -

How were you notified of the offer, Por? -

Received an acceptance and a pretty generic snail mail letter. Nothing about funding. Going to contact the department head next week. -
From my experience with loans as an undergrad... any student loans you take out go directly to the school and are distributed to you from there. I imagine that since it equals the estimated cost including tuition/living/etc. that you won't be able to get any federal assistance or private student loans. You'll probably have to go private personal if you're looking for more money. Best thing for you to do though would probably just be to give the financial aid office a call at whatever school you were accepted to with funding and ask them.
