I have a question for the PhD's on this board. Are there any of you who were awarded a SSHRC/CGS and DO NOT have anything published in a peer-reviewed journal? thanks,

Apologies for not posting this sooner, in case any MA applicants are still waiting and checking this thread, but I received my letter on Tuesday. I'm in Halifax, NS, so I imagine if any MAs haven't received their letter yet they should very soon. I found it interesting that the letter told me I have four weeks from the "date on the notice of award" to accept it. What's funny is that the date on the notice is May 6, and I didn't receive the letter until May 19th! If they expect applicants to accept before the 4 week deadline the letters all HAVE to arrive very shortly, if they haven't already. To the PhD's my heart goes out to you, I can't believe you're STILL getting the "late this week, early next week" business. I reckon many of you will be too numb and drained to feel any excitement (or disappointment) by the time the letters finally arrive.

I feel your pain westies. I got an email from my grad coordinator last week congratulating me on winning a sshrc, and someone from the FGS also confirmed that I was on the University's "successful" list, but still no letter. I'm also beginning to freak out, a little bit, wondering what the chances are that there might have been some sort of mistake. I'm in Halifax, NS, so it might just be taking a little longer to get here, but I noticed a poster received their letter all the way in Victoria sooo... Anyhow, we'll have to find some way to make it out of this long weekend alive and sane, and hope that the letters arrive on Tuesday.

I'm sorry to selfishly chime in with a question about the MA SSHRC's when I know many of the phD's on this board are still suffering but... Has anyone received their letter yet? You'd think if they mailed it last Thursday or Friday at least one of us would have received a letter? At this point I really wouldn't be surprised if they were getting ready to mail them right now, but if anyone has received their letter, please post.

My school did something like this as well but I didn't attend! I wasn't even going to bother applying for SSHRC. I had already been awarded a nice departmental scholarship and TA-ship and I was somewhat intimidated by the whole SSHRC process. But we had a session during the Master's seminar dedicated to SSHRC, and that session made it sound very undaunting and less intimidating so I figured what heck, I'll give it a shot and started frantically putting together a proposal with two weeks to deadline. Seems to have paid off if the results from the FGS are confirmed by a letter... it's still a bit nerve-racking wondering if there might have been some sort of mistake!

I'm going to have to agree 110% percent. My supervisor worked extensively with me on my proposal and made tons of suggestions. I typed three or four drafts and ran them by her before she was finally satisfied. Once she was satisfied I ran that draft by my graduate co-ordinator and he also made some very useful suggestions and picked up on some things that my supervisor had missed. By the time I had my final draft was ready it looked nothing like the first draft. It was the same research question, methodology, etc. but it was worded and articulated sooo much better. However, the faculty at my department are awesome and extremely helpful and friendly and always seem to find time for you. I doubt this is the case everywhere.

I just got an email from the graduate co-oridinator at my Department. MY APPLICATION WAS SUCCESSFUL!! yay!!!! I'm guessing most FGS should have the results by now! Good luck to all!!!!

Yep. I'm one of them. I stumbled across this website when I was googling SSHRC, and so far this thread has proven to be the best source of information about SSHRC. The stats chart that Natalia posted for 2009 for example. I told the FGS at my school that the stats were out and they were absolutely astonished and asked me where I got them from, and I told them they were posted on the grad cafe website. Anyhow has anyone contacted their universities today to try and find out the results? I asked someone at FGS to email me as soon as they know and still no email

Ah, right-o. For some reason I thought we signed our lives over to them and they were allowed access to that information through the university whenever they wanted. Guess this whole shenanigan is obscuring my ability to think coherently. Damn you SSHRC! So judging from the posts, the holdup is because of a "new system" for the docs and post-docs? I really don't know what to believe anymore. First it was "near the end of April" now its "late next week" which means mid-May... it can't be that much longer can it? I feel like mid-may will become "near the end of May" and "near the end of May" will become "late in the first week of June" ad infinitum. /rant.

This is an email I received from the grad secretary in my department on March 13... From: Research Services Subject: NSERC and SSHRC grants announcements late Grant announcements will be later than usual. NSERC and SSHRC are using a new system of review and would like to validate their results carefully before announcing them. They ask for your patience and understanding. They are simply being more cautious in this first year of their new system. Please share this within in your faculties. This is a long shot but I wonder if this new system of "validating their results carefully" has anything to do with the grades for the winter term? perhaps they are waiting for the grades of all the applicants to be available before they "validate" the results?

Here is the latest... Hi, the results will be mailed out late next week but you can call your university on Monday or Tuesday to find out the results. Thanks. Gis

True. 25% of the total awards were given to psychology and fine arts alone, which (i think?) are disciplines with a high female-male ratio.

The males are getting absolutely SMOKED by the females on this. Look at table 9. A 70/30 ratio in favor of the girls. Not good news for us guys!

Good Observation! There is a contradiction between the numbers in the chart "Institution at time of application" and the chart "institution to award." But I'm assuming some applicants might have applied through one institution and decided to do their MA at another institution i.e. students finishing their honours degrees and applying from the school they are finishing at, but being awarded the grant from a different institution, which they will be doing their MA at. (if that makes any sense) That's how I understand it anyways.

Wow, I was googling SSHRC to try and find out what the heck was going on, and I literally LOL'ed when I stumbled upon this website with a 25 page long thread full of grad students as anxious, nervous, and frustrated as I am! Anywho, Thank you Natalia for finding and posting the statistics and giving us something to obsess over while we wait for the official results. You are the hero of this thread (for us MA students anyways) I noticed that my institution was awarded the same number of sshrcs as the quota of A-list applications that they forwarded to Ottawa. I'm not sure whether to get excited and celebrate or to prepare myself for the stinging disappointment that mine was rejected and the award was given to an "alternate" instead. I guess the drama will never end until the envelopes arrive in our mailboxes.
