  1. First, congratulations to your offers!

I am a first year PhD at UW Biostats now.  I'd like to provide you with something I know.

In my year, there are 5 masters and 2 out of them are funded now (1 for TA and 1 for RA). The guy who is doing RA once told me that he contacted one of the professors and after several talks he got that position. I don't know how another guy got his TA.

I guess the likelihood of you getting funded depends on how many PhD at last enrolled in this year. First-year PhD students have priority to get funded for sure.

As for the PhD pathway you mentioned, I am sorry that I am not quite familiar with this part. I don't know any 2nd-year or 3rd-year PhD student here who was first admitted to our master program then got into our PhD program. You'd better to ask this from department directly.

    Hope this is useful.

  2. Just got accepted as well. Are you also on the 'waiting list for a fellowship'? I am wondering if I should contact their faculty members to see if there are possible RA-ships.

Yes. I guess it is the general situation right now. But I am not too worried about it.

  3. CMU has the deadline until April 15th. But UW said it will not make the final decision until then. I just don't know whether it worths the time to wait for the result, which I think the chance to get in is still quite small.

I think that you could just wait for the result. I don't think you need to do anything more during the waiting period. Since you have already got the CMU offer, I guess the waiting time will not be so suffering. The "worst" result for you is that at last you are not off wait-list from UW Seattle and then you accept the CMU offer on April 15th. It sounds not bad, right?

Of course, this is just my personal advice.

  4. I know that UW Seattle's Biostatistics PhD program provides their students with a Statistical Genetics Pathway. I am not sure if the Statistics PhD program also has same choice. But it is true that UW Seattle's Stats and Biostats programs are always closely linked.

I think you could wait until April before you make any decision. Does CMU ask you to reply to the offer right now or do you have any reason to reply to the offer at this early stage?

  5. Maybe they'll send it to you later this week if they just notified you that you're accepted? Though that does seem short notice since the visit is the 20th/21st. Are you going to any other visits? That's a good idea to share thoughts about the visits though! I feel like it could be helpful to know how different schools run their recruiting events, what the professors and current grad students are like, and things like that in case people can't make it to the visits or to just generally help others get a feel for how these things go. Not going to lie, I'm a little nervous for the visit at Brown since it'll be my first recruiting event!

I was at JHU last weekend. I am busy doing my homework these days so haven't got chance to share my experience with anybody. Maybe later I will find some time to write something I feel. Anyway, JHU has a very very nice program and I really enjoyed the campus visit there.

I will also go to Brown. See you at Brown!

  6. For anybody that got into UT Austin's stats program:

    Was it a personalized email?

    Are you likely to go?

It's high on my list but I haven't heard back yet.

My email seems not personalized. It was an email asking me to check the website. I got the campus visit invitation yesterday and the email was also generic.

I may not go there since it is a long distance from my current location and I have very tight schedule in late Feb...

  7. Hey, I just got admitted to UNC Biostatistics PhD. I didn't receive any invitation from UNC before so I may not go there for visit. I'd like to see  your comments about your visiting there!

I'm just spending the time there (getting in Thursday early afternoon) and heading out on Sunday (spending the night with a friend after the event ends). Are you a current student there or something?

  8. I am a US citizen by birth.  Based on my impressions of other students (for example, no one ever identified themselves as an international applicant) and the fact that at one point we were all referred to as "domestic" applicants, I do not believe there were any international students there.  I would guess that anyone without NIH training grant eligibility is reviewed with the international pool because of the added difficulty in funding them.  I know a stellar Chinese-born applicant from last year with excellent research fit and impeccable US-based credentials who was not offered an interview, so there's that.  I am not familiar with NIH rules and could be completely wrong about Harvard's approach, though.

Thank you! Really appreciate your information! Good luck for you application!
