  1. should I put that in my SOP? My instinct says no, but I just want to see what everyone else says.
  2. I thought 90th percentile was 640 or higher. Got 64th percentile on Math (660) and a 5.0 (81%) on writing. I plan to take it one more time to try to raise my Verbal score. I don't think anyone looks at the writing, but I am fine with a 5.0 score. I plan to apply to Vandy and Middle Tennessee State (Master's Program). I need to stay in Nashville area for family reasons; so, that severely limits my choices.
  3. Verbal-610 (88%) Quantitative- 660 (64%) Analytical Writing- 5.0 (81%) Does anyone even look at the writing? Just curious. I plan on applying to Vandy's Phd History program and Middle Tennessee State University (Master's program). I need to stay in the Nashville area for family reasons; so, that severely limits my choices.
  4. I did lower on the Verbal on the actual GRE than I did on the practice tests I was taking. On the practice tests, I was making between 660-690. On the actual GRE, my Verbal score was a 610. The math was about the same. I was averaging about a 660-680 on the practice tests, and my actual score was 660 on the GRE.
  5. apply to this fall is working on a dissertation that is similar to my interest. My research interest is the slave trade and slavery laws in Alabama (particularly Mobile area) and also the impact slavery and the slave trade had on the economy and/or culture of the area. (Broad topic I know, but of course I will narrow it down by where the research leads me). The third year student at this school is doing his dissertation on colonial and antebellum legal history and its relation to slavery and race in Virginia. We both have Juris Doctorate's. Would this similarity of interests negatively impact my admission chances at the school?
  6. I don't think they tell everyone. I think it may just be the luck of the draw. Not sure. I could say more, but I do not want to break the confidentiality agreement.
  7. the good news is they told me it was experimental. So, the ones that looked to complicated, I just marked an answer and moved right along
  8. Does it tell you how many you missed in each section? What type of questions you missed, analogies, antonyms, etc? Or, does it just give you the scores?
  9. I am very disappointed in the Verbal part. I was shooting for at least a 650, and on all the practice tests, I was making at least that. I have no idea what happened. Guess I have to take the test again. I was too disappointed to even have the score sent. Is it realistic to get at least a 40 point jump on the verbal section? If not, I guess I am going to a "safety" school.
  10. I would be surprised with anything less than a 5 on the AW section. I got a 610V and a 660Q. I was shooting for a 650V score. So, I am disappointed. On all the practice tests, I was getting 650 and above on the Verbal, so I do not know what happened. Is it realistic to think I can improve my Verbal score by 40 points if I retake the test? Or, would that be a waste of time?
  11. I got a 640 Verbal (91%) and 680 Math (70%). However, I missed 9 out of 30 on the Verbal and 12 out of 28 on the math. How can my scores possibly be that high?
  12. people with a PhD in History? I have had a couple friends try to talk me out of going to grad school saying that I would never find a decent job. I know at one time it was slim pickings, but has the job market improved, or is it expected to improve? I know now we are in a recession and that does not help at all. I am just looking for the overall outlook.
  13. I live in Nashville and plan on applying to Vanderbilt's PhD History program this fall. I graduated in 1992 from a small liberal arts college with majors in History and English, and a minor in Political Science. I had a 3.92 cumulative GPA/ 4.0 history GPA. After college, I went to law school, and I graduated from Washington and Lee in 1996, with a 3.40 GPA. I practiced law for a while, but I did not like it. I went into teaching, high school and middle school. I am working this year in a program for at risk students. However, I want to teach history at the collegiate level. Here are a couple questions I have: 1. Does any one know what the average GRE scores are for accepted students into Vanderbilt's history program? I cannot find those anywhere on the net. I have not taken the GRE yet, but I plan to take it in July. It would be nice though to have a target to shoot for. 2. For a writing sample, I have a 10 page case summary that was published in the first edition of Washington and Lee's Race and Ethnic Ancestry Law Journal. Is that sufficient? I do not have any of my undergraduate papers or anything like that since it has been such a long period of time since I graduated. 3. Letters of recommendation may be tricky for me. I have not kept up with any of the professors at either schoool since I left, but some of the professors I worked with are still at the schools. What if they do not remember me that well? How do I approach them after so long asking them to write me a LOR? Even if they do remember me, should I get someone ( a supervisor?) to write me a LOR just so I have something more recent than 1996? Any help that someone can give me on these issues will be greatly appreciated.
