  1. Hey everyone,

Quick question... does anybody know roughly when we might hear from Carleton for the 2-year MSW program? Mid-Feb?

I'm a recent graduate of UofO in economics and applied to their policy and social administration sub-discipline. I'm really hoping that my economics degree and experience at the House of Commons plus my 3 years of experience as a camp counsellor will be a bonus for my application.

Also, I admit that I fall victim to checking my app nearly every day... unrealistically expecting a changed status so soon hahaha.

    Cheers,

    .EC

It is my understanding that Carleton will notify unsuccessful applicants as early as late January and successful applicants sometime in February. I think you have some good experience under your belt, especially if you are applying to the social admin and policy stream.

    Good luck!

  2. Hi all,

This is my second year posting on this forum. I have just submitted my 'round 2' application for the MSW program at Carleton. Over the past year I've been able to bring my GPA up to an A-, top up my work experience to 6,000 hours (between my job at a hospital and volunteering on a crisis line), and I've tailored my personal statement to be congruent with Carleton's 'Structural Approach' to social work education. I'm really hoping that this will be my year! Anyone here in the same boat with Carleton???

    Cheers!

    Best of luck to everyone.

  3. I think applying next year is a really good idea, if all else fails. Good luck to you!

    MSW-CU,

You are right about Carleton. I just called and they told me my experience is fine. If I do not get accepted to a school this year, I will not be happy about missing out on that opportunity, especially because they probably receive fewer applications than some other schools due to all of that experience that you need. I really think their website should be clearer and I probably should have called last year just to double check.

I also called Calgary and was told that my experience is not quite what they are looking for and given the high level of competition and strong applications they receive, it would be very hard to get in if I applied. So I definitely made the right decision about Calgary.

  4. Hello again Jenste,

You are right about needing at least 3500 hours of experience for a competitive application to Carleton, and moreover, community placement hours from schools must not be included.

However, "social work related experience" simply means working in the vulnerable sector in some way shape or form with populations that have problems. This includes hospitals, correctional institutions, social service agencies, crisis lines, and the list goes on and on...

I am a nursing assistant. According to the Calgary website, your experience needs to be related to counselling. My work experience is not even close to the suggested job titles on the website so I did not apply. I even showed the website to a friend who is a PhD Psychologist and researcher and he said according to the info on the website I don't have the right kind of experience and it would probably be a waste of time to apply to this school.

I don't remember the details of what I read on the Carlton website, but I believe you need 3500 hrs doing social work type of experience and I only have a bit of volunteer work in this area. Are you telling me that I could have applied and been considered a candidate? I have about 400 internship hrs in a related area (but the website says internship hrs can't be included) and about 400-500 counselling hrs as a volunteer so it seemed to me that I was very short on hours.

  5. I'm a transportation worker, so my job is to work with nurses and orderlies to help transfer patients between areas of the hospital.... ICU, OR, Emergency etc.

That sounds like a great job you have!

What sort of work experience do you have in a hospital? I don't have a BSW, but I have "social work" type experience, including working at the Children' Hospital in Calgary as a Mental Health Therapy Assistant. Just curious :)

  6. Hi Jenste,

Where did you hear that Carleton does not view hospital experience as relevant? I too, have five years experience in a hospital and I was told such experience was very relevant. Especially for those applicants wanting to work in health care.

Thanks! I'll check out that website for sure.

Even though I have 5 years of experience in a hospital, I couldn't apply to Calgary or Carleton because they want lots of experience in the social services. Fortunately, the other schools were ok because they look for experience in the human services.

  7. Hey MSW_CU,

I am actually a Carleton (2 year) MSW student currently. I just checked my e-mail and I was accepted to Carleton on February 15th (my first contact/indication of acceptance was from Sue Brady - so look out for that name in your e-mail).

I'm not sure what they are looking for or how they make their decisions - I can only offer a little bit about my experience.

I had about 4-5 years of volunteering (3 different organizations), 2 years working full time as an addictions counsellor, I had an A- avg. in my last 2 years at University, and had completed an additional college program in addiction.

I know that my cohort has a very wide range of interests/experience, which is why I can't offer more in terms of what they are looking for.

I think if nothing else, the fact that you addressed the structural social work approach in your application will definitely help!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know,

  8. Hi everyone!

I am just curious, I see a lot of posts concerning schools in the GTA, but has anyone on here applied to the MSW program at Carleton for the Fall 2013 intake? It is the only program I applied to this time around and I am anxiously awaiting the verdict on my application. I am hopeful that I put together a strong package; I have a GPA in the high B+ range, 5 years employment working part-time in a hospital, a little bit of volunteer experience working in a psychiatric hospital, and a little bit of volunteer experience answering crisis calls at the Distress Centre here in Ottawa (started in september). In addition, I touched on many themes of structural social work in my personal statement because I know that Carleton is really only looking for students who have a desire to practice structural social work.

Can anyone who has any experience with Carleton offer some insight into my chances of being accepted? I think I'm starting to freak myself out a little...

    Cheers!
