  1. A proposal: I think there should be a system that when someone accepts an offer, he/she automatically be removed from admitted list and waiting list of other universities. If there is a third party player in the whole application process that keeps track of all the results this agency can help everyone to get what they deserve. This will improve the chance of all applicants and in the same time helps universities to find their best match.
  2. yes, we should unofficially consider it a REJECTIONNNNNNNNNNNN. Maybe we could consider it a wait-list and hope that all Chicago admittees have also offers from MIT, UCLA, STANFORD etc still waiting....
  3. One more Accept from UChicago in the results section. I hear my heartbeats.
  4. Thank you MissTrace for being frank. I got it. Hope good news for all. I got all i had to know here thanks to the valuable information my friends provided here.
  5. You won't believe it but i would be more happy if i got rejections for all but one application. That would make me more happy. Good luck with your other applications.
  6. The problem is each day i think about one of these options and the more i think about it the more confusion. I wish i had not applied to all these universities specially the Canada and the U.S. options are more confusing for me. Never thought i'll be unhappy with my admissions!
  7. Thank you all for your comments and responses. I'm going to check where graduate students ended up. It is a hard decision to make. Just a few minutes before i received an informal email from POI in McGill about my acceptance there. Canada is has a better chance if i want to stay after my graduation. Furthermore my spouse can work there. More parameters, More confusion. Good luck for everyone.
  8. I'm really WAITING for the Chicago and Northwestern. I saw on ACCEPT and one WAIT in the list for Northwestern but no rejection. I got nothing so there is a high chance that i'm going to get a REJECTION. UChicago has just an accept in the list. So i can keep myself happy on that. Good luck for everyone.
  9. thank you very much funchaku for your help.I'll consider the points you mentioned. thank you and good luck with your great admissions offers.
  10. Thank you for your detailed response. I'm international and i can't visit. yes, Dr. Pater's work is really interesting. My spouse won't have the work permit while we are in U.S. so we are totally dependent on the university fund for the two of us. The research in both universities completely matches to my research interests. I'm waiting for Northwestern and UChicago. Up to now my ranking is (in case i get admission from UChicago and Northwestern): 1-UChicago 2-Northwestern 3-Cornell 4-UMass The four completely match my research interests and have strong work on computational linguistics, phonology/phonetics. I'm still thinking about the importance of university reputation and that of program's (aside from my work which is the most important factor) in getting an academic job in a good university.
  11. Applied: Texas Austin, UMich, Johns Hopkins, Rutgers, Chicago, Maryland, Washington, Northwestern, Arziona, UIUC, Cornell, UMass, McGill Accepted: Cornell, UMass Wait-Listed:Rutgers Rejected:Johns Hopkins, Austin, UMich Interviewed: Brown, McGill, somehow UIUC waiting: chicago, maryland, washington, northwestern I'm really confused on choosing between Cornell and UMass. On one hand Cornell itself has a very strong reputation and i have interests in the computational linguistics lab and phonetics lab there. On the other hand i think UMass's linguistics program is more recognized as a top program and i'm interested in computational phonology works there. I'm coming with my spouse. The amount of funding for Cornell is 23000 for 9 months and 4500 for summer. UMass offered me 19000 for a year. I have lived in a big warm city with a population of more than 10M. I need to get academic jobs as a teacher in good universities and i don't know whether the reputation of the program is more important or the reputation of the university. Confused, Help me please.
  12. I found the NRC ranking very similar to what i had in my mind about the quality of universities. This ranking is much better than other rankings. NRC ranking for Linguistics programs in U.S. : http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124741/http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124741/ regards.
  13. My current choices are here in order: 1- Johns Hopkins 2- UChicago 3- Cornell 4- Brown 5- McGill any idea?
  14. Very important point you mentioned MorphoGuy about near universities. I'll certainly consider that. I'm going to teach in US. So i want a program which is more reputed in US. I just looked at placement ranks and found that Johns Hopkins cognitive program has a higher placement rank than others. Thank you very much. It's worth to mention that i have carefully selected these universities and i have high interests in all of them.
  15. Thank you very much for your careful response. I'm gonna make the interviews and get the formal offer. I'm gonna make the decision after getting all the information including the funding package.
  16. Thank you for your guide. Two more questions: 1- If it was up to you how did you sort these linguistics programs? Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Brown, McGill 2- If i want to choose between Cornell and McGill which one is more prestigious? Which one i'll have a better chance to find an academic job in other universities? (I know it is dependent on many factors but put yourself in my shoes) Thanks
  17. Thank you very much for your detailed response. Would you recommend telling the interviewers from McGill and Brown that i have an admission from Cornell? Do you think it makes them think i'm going to reject them? Your point was very good that i should not withdraw before getting an offer with funding. thank you
  18. I'm an international student so my spouse won't be able to work, she is going to work on her Egnlish and apply the next year for Master/Ph.D. in Architecture. My field is phonetics/phonology/computational lingiustics. I want the most reputable one. The one that i can easily find a teaching position after graduation. So my priorities are the ones that will give me the best job offer after graduation. My fund in Cornell is 23000$/year . 2 years of fellowship and 3 years of TAship. I am compeletely dependent upon the university fund.
  19. I am an international student and have applied to these universities for Linguistics Ph.D. : 1-Chicago 2-Johns Hopkins (Cognitive and Linguistics) 3-Cornell 4-Brown (Cognitive and Linguistics) 5- McGill 6- UIUC 7- UMich 8- UWashington Seattle 9- Maryland 10-Arizona Tucson 11- Rutgers 12- UMass Amherst 13- Austin Texas 14- Northwestern I have admission letter from Cornell and very good emails for interview from McGill, Brown and an offer of TAship from UIUC. I withdraw from Arizona last day after a positive interview. I don't know which one to choose. Is it okay if i withdraw from McGill and Brown? My top choices are Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Brown, McGill. How do i choose one of them? (I have no news from Johns Hopkins and Chicago yet) I'm married and depend upon the university fund. I need to choose the program which i can easily find an academic job after graduation. All the programs have been carefully selected and match with my research interests. Would you please help me to compare my top choices?
