  1. Here is some good advice: http://thesiswhisperer.com/2012/03/05/traveling-during-your-phd/
  2. I am not sending an email, asking if they want me to give a talk! I said, similar to conference participation, you can also make connections by going for a visit and maybe present in the school’s weekly graduate students’ seminars etc.
  3. Thank you all for your helpful comments. I never denied any of these, just said it doesn’t work in philosophy in a way it does in science, as long as getting a position is concerned. In addition, it seems one can get all the above benefits by going for a visit: by going to their weekly seminars, presenting and getting feedback etc. I know there is a postdoc position available next year in one of my favorite schools. After reading your comments on the importance of connections, I am thinking maybe I go there for a visit, present my work and open a relationship, till the application time. Sounds very good. Any comments on this? Besides, I think we should not underestimate the importance of at least one ‘good’ publication. After all, it is the most important thing (and maybe the only thing) that shows you can do philosophy. Otherwise, everybody is doing philosophy! Thank you all.
  4. Thanks for the comments. In this sesne, I should try conferences as well. As you said, it is not a silver bullet, but I should not underestimate its factor. Thanks.
  5. Asking question and following that up by email?! That is exactly why I think there is no much point for philosophy students going to conferences, of course as long as we are concerned with job positions.
  6. Thank you all for your reply. Let me mention that PhD in Europe is 3 years, and I am in my last year. Besides, one of my advisors is a pretty well-known philosopher in one of the top 3 schools in the States. We invited him for a talk last semester, and now I think maybe I can go there for a visit too. I think this is great opportunity since it is not available for everyone: there must be something about your work that you have been accepted for the visit. Now, if I am right (am I?), the visit would have a positive impact in my CV. What do you think? A side note about conference attendance: I don’t see how meeting people at conferences help in getting a position for ‘philosophy’ students (This, of course, greatly helps ‘science’ students). The most important factor for philosophy students, as long as I know, is good publications. Thanks.
  7. Hi everyone, I was just wondering how much it matters (with respect to your future success in academia, for example, in getting a postdoc position, tenure etc.) if you go for a visit to top philosophy schools during your PhD. I am a PhD student in Europe. Any thoughts? Thank you.
  8. Hi everyone, As english is my second language, i was thinking maybe i can send my writing to some editing and proofreading service before sending it for publication. But I am not sure where to sent it. Any thoughts on editing institutions, good for philosophical papers? Thanks.
  9. Thank you all for your insights. I have never submitted to any conference, even didn't know that I can submit to multiple conferences at the same time, and would receive feedback on my work, which is quite valuable. Thanks again.
  10. Hi everyone, I am philosophy graduate student outside the state, and planning to send a paper to one of philosophy graduate conferences (ex. Harvard-MIT graduate Conference in Philosophy). I was just wondering how prestigious are these conferences, and how good it is if one's paper gets accepted into one of these conferences. More precisely, is it something that good that you should mention in your CV? Does it indicate that it is also highly probable that you can also publish the paper in a good philosophy journal? Thank you in advance for your insights.
  11. Narziss: Thanks for the comment. It was helpful.
  12. Thanks for the comment, but I was asking about the difficulty/implications of becoming a PhD visiting student for 1 or 2 terms at a prestigious school!
  13. I would like to know how hard it is to be admitted as a (philosophy) PhD visiting student at a prestigious school like MIT or Harvard, especially if you are not currently in top ranked department. In addition, how important it is? I mean what are its implications, both academic and non-academic, if you spend one or two terms at, say, MIT under the supervision of some well-known philosopher? Of course it improves your research, but what else it has?
  14. I am going to start my PhD this October at a university in Belgium. The advisory committee for my PhD thesis consists of 3 advisors. Two of the advisors are from my current university (the one I have got admission from), and I have the chance to find the third advisor from a university outside Belgium. I have decided to find the third advisor from a pretty high rank department in the States. Does it make sense to approach a professor in the States and ask him/her to be part of an advisory committee of a student who is student in Europe? Any ideas would be appreciated.
  15. Hi, I have been invited for an interview week at my top school in Germany. The interview week is quite scheduled, and they say candidates should use this time to find a project and a potential supervisor, and only those who find a project can be admitted! They also provide accommodation, and offer refunds for travel costs etc. When I received the email, I had only two weeks time to apply for visa, so I told them I need more time as visa application process takes about 4 to 6 weeks time. They offered a Skype interview instead. So instead of one week interview, they offered a Skype interview in which I have 20 minutes time to present my research topic (I have already submitted my own research project) for 4-5 faculty (!!), and then they ask questions for about 10 minutes. Do you think 30 minutes Skype instead of a week interview is affecting my chances of admission? Thank you!
