  1. As my signature indicates I have received three admissions but I have received no funding.

So, I may be forced to apply for fall 2014. Now, I have a question: how can I increase my chances for receiving a financial assistant package? Should I contact the faculty before or after submitting my applications? Should I email faculty members and try to convince them to invest on me?

Firstly, you should never lose your hope. Two years ago in the pretty much the same situation, I received a financial aid package from UT Austin in early May!, which was too late for my case.

Contacting faculty members is a good idea, especially if you have insight on what you want to do, and relevant research experience which may convince a faculty member to give you an RA position.

The other thing that you may want to consider is that if you somehow can afford one semester of your study, you will most probably can find a funding source after a semester or even during the first semester.

Don't give up soon and good luck!

  2. I haven't received any first year funding offer from Berkeley yet. There's a high chance that I'll attend USC, but it's just too hard to choose between the Information and Operations Management program of the business school and the ISE program of the engineering school. Please give me your thoughts, right now I can really use every idea of every person that I can get...

    Hi shiraziaseel

You should consider your research interests in the first place. I do not know much about the quality of OM program at USC, but ISE at USC is a descent IE program. I would say the main difference would be working on more classic IE/OR projects in ISE rather than working on more theoretical/business analytic motivated projects in business school. You may also consider that you will have much easier work down the road if you want to end up as a faculty member by going to a business school.

    Good luck!

  3. I am curious as well... Any thoughts?

After a long line of rejections I received an offer from Austin. What is the quality of this program? If anyone knows something about the department, I will appreciate the sharing of information . . .

They have a pretty good OR program. I'd say they do more classic theoretical operations research. Dave Morton is one of the bests in stochastic programming. and Hasenbein is pretty good in stochastic networks. Their cs,business school, math, and stat departments are very good as well. You should consider that UT Austin is one of the best universities in the US overall.

  4. Same boat man.  I am waiting for Cornell and Michigan as well.  A few people have posted that they heve been accepted to Cornell.  That made me really nervours!

But at least you got an interview with Michigan.  So, I think you have a great chance there.  I had a phone interview with Wisconsin Madison and was admitted with funding a few days after that.  I wish Michigan will do the same to you. :)

I contacted Cornell grad coordinator earlier this week and she said they will send out rejections and waitlist in a week or two. It seems they've made the first round of admission decisions!

  5. So it seems as if one person has been contacted by Stanford. An out of the blue phone call to let someone know they were "short-listed" doesn't sound particularly official though, so I'd guess it's a POI interested in working with the applicant. Previous years don't mention anything about being contacted by phone at such a stage either.

So hopefully the rest of us can maintain hope.

My dream program, above all remained and rejected and admitted!

  6. Buckeyeee, thanks for the info! I am anxiously waiting to hear back from the top schools like Berkeley.

Did you go to OSU for undergrad? Did you apply for their PhD program?

Not a problem. Actually I didn't do my undergrad at OSU and I did not apply to OSU PhD program. I'm waiting for top schools as well and it's really stressful as you say. By the way, congrats on your OSU admission.
