  1. I'm off to the great white north of Cornell.
  2. Yeah, I've met a ton of Cornell people at these events and they all seem to love Cornell and Ithaca. My final decision is still up in the air, but that's mainly because I still have two visits left (WashU and Cornell). After my final visit, I'll probably be able to know which school will be best for me within a few days. So you must have really liked Santa Barbara, can't blame you since that was a really nice place. Have you received any finite financial offer from them? I don't like how the admission's letter was vague and mentioned a stipend of "at least" 26,000.
  3. Since we are on the topic of Cornell, I heard someone mention that their department has taken a pretty big hit within the past 5-10 years with other schools cherry-picking their faculty. I don't know how much validity is behind this statement, but have any of you heard anything of the sort? I'm strongly considering Cornell and it doesn't seem to have effected my area of research if it is true.
  4. lol, isn't that every night at these events? Traveling there is going to royally suck, especially with a 3 hour time change.
  5. Who's all headed to Michigan this weekend?
  6. Sorry about misreading into your opinion of Caltech, phsu. I'm sure you'll get in  .
  7. Phsu, thanks for news. That's what I suspected about Caltech. It's smallness wasn't what deterred me from applying there, but that's something I don't think I could handle for another ~5 years (I come from a small private school and I think it's definitely time to move to a much larger school). I'm surprised for a department of their size that they invited 30 people, but I guess it is an 'interview' weekend so some people will self-weed themselves out based on what you mentioned about their department's focus on the science and not engineering aspect. From what you said, it sounds like it isn't someplace you can see yourself going. I hope your other visits give you some better vibes.
  8. I cannot comment on Carnegie Mellon, but Cornell e-mailed me a couple of weeks ago with an acceptance. I didn't contact them inquiring about my admission's status. From what I understand, they have offered 20 offers of admission. I don't know about the possibility of a wait-list, but they definitely sent out mass rejections on Saturday morning of this past weekend based on posted results. I hope that helps, Shahn, good luck!
  9. phsu and anyone else that went to Caltech this weekend, how did it go?
  10. Johns Hopkins just e-mailed me inviting me for a paid visit, which is the same weekend as WashU's.
  11. As far as visits, I'll be going to Florida, WashU, Michigan, Illinois, and Cornell.
  12. Just my two cents, but "second round" is just a code name for "wait list."
  13. I am going to do 5 visits, but I agree that this is kind of overkill and I should probably only do 3.
  14. Hey guys, sorry I'm joining the party late, but: Applied: Cornell, Florida, Illinois, Johns Hopkins, Michigan, MIT (Chem), UCSB, WashU (Chem) Accepted: Cornell, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, UCSB, WashU No word on the last two yet.
