I was informed I had received one on Thursday through a phone call... does anybody know of a way to guess how much money we will actually qualify for of that 30,000? I'm waiting for the financial aid office at my school to get back to me.
A professor I was talking to started apologizing to me for the small size of the cohort this year--this is a school where they've gone from ~50 entering students to ~15 over the past five years--and used the same reasoning you're using, saying "It might be lonely, but you'll thank us when you're on the job market."
I didn't argue with her.
I received an acceptance e-mail from Michigan from my potential advisor, because I had told her that I was in Germany and not to expect me to pick up my phone.
The e-mail said they only sent offers to ten Europeanists, over all places and periods. This year has been brutal.
I also was admitted to Chicago today, I'm in 20th century Germany and would love to talk to anyone at Chicago.
I asked my potential advisor about the competitive reputation, and she said that it used to be the case, but now that everyone is guaranteed full funding, the department is a lot more collegial. But who knows--does anyone actually have first-hand experience with the place?
(And will I be seeing anyone else at History Day?)
I learned that I had received a research grant to Germany nearly a month ago... I still haven't gotten the follow-up letter with grant authorization forms and stuff (although I did send in my medical reports), and I was wondering if anyone else has received anything? I know I won't be there until September 13th, but I find myself anxious for more information now.
I'll click back through the forum, but if anyone else is also a German Research grantee, I'd love to talk to you! Congrats to everyone else who has gotten got news.
