  1. So I just got an iPad for my birthday. I've already spent hours in the App Store and I started to think: are there any apps the rest of you think are essential for the religion student? I already found one I like for studying Latin. There seem to be an endless amount of Bible study apps.

  2. Oh boy!!  :)

First of all, congrats to everyone who's gotten good news over the past few weeks!

I've just been offered a full ride to Yale (MDiv) by e-mail. This makes things interesting, as I've had the same offer from Vandy and PTS. Duke has yet to send me funding info, but I seriously doubt I'll be offered a full ride.

I've turned down the offer from Vanderbilt, so that leaves YDS vs. PTS. What do you guys think?

My ultimate goal is teaching historical theology at university or seminary.

I know both places are strong in postliberal theology, and I love it. I'm very interested in studying Barth, and I know PTS is definitely the place for that, with both McCormack and Hunsinger on staff. On the other hand, Yale has Miroslav Volf, and Kathryn Tanner...

For someone who wants to go on to doctoral work, which of the two is preferable? How much does it matter that PTS is not part of Princeton University, while Yale is Yale?

Also, anyone have any info on raising a family in Princeton vs. New Haven (I have one toddler and another one on the way)?

    All opinions are appreciated!

Again, congrats to all and to those who didn't get their first choices, don't give up! I flunked my way through high school, dropped out of my senior year and only got serious about my studies 4 years later, when I decided to take the GED and start from scratch at a community college. If I made it (and I'm not particularly bright) so will you.

    Best to all!

I did the same thing with my studies that you did! Nice to meet another person with my same schooling experiences.  I don't know much about Princeton, but New Haven is nice. Yale is located in a city setting and the campus is breath taking, reminds me of Hogwarts lol. You could probably find some decent priced living in the towns just outside the city.

I don't know much about either particular program because I didn't apply to them myself, but being in CT has major advantages. You'd be really close to get to Boston and NYC for all the academic resources that are available in those places so it would be really easy to make great connections with people. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Congrats on all your excellent offers!

  3. So I find it funny that if you look on results page, a good portion of the people accepted to Duke will be turning them down. That's good news for anyone on their wait list, if they have one. But maybe they should consider accepting a smaller amount of people in the future so they can give more funding since that's usually what it all comes down to.

  4. Thanks for the sympathies, but I'm in no condition to complain: 100%+stipend from Chicago, 100% from UTS, and admission to YDS's Institute for Sacred Music (100%+small stipend) with info about non-ISM aid coming tomorrow.  Harvard's just helped make my choice easier. :)

Oh wow, that's awesome!!! I'm jealous! Yeah, screw HDS!

  5. It's always disheartening to find out that your top school isn't offering you enough money...I was so elated when I heard from HDS yesterday too. Whomp.

Does anyone know whether it's standard practice to ask for more when it comes to HDS, and/or to leverage other schools' offers against theirs? I feel like there are rules to this kind of thing that I just don't know, know what I mean?

Hope others got better news about that whole pesky funding situation!

Did HDS not offer you anything either?

  6. I just learned that HDS isn't offering me any sort of scholarship, so it's off the list.  Fingers crossed that everyone else on here who received an email got more exciting news than that!

I'm sorry to hear that. Still nice to be able to say that you got in though! Is anyone else offering you money?

  7. Well folks, got an 80% scholarship from Vanderbilt today, so that's pretty cool.  Yale says they'll tell me about money on Friday, and Duke said I didn't make the scholarship cut the first round, but I may hear again in April. So that's that.

Meanwhile... WHERE THE HECK IS HARVARD??

    Great news on the funding!

Supposedly Harvard will be sending out their decision this Friday.

  8. Congrats, Matthew! I haven't received an email from Chicago nor has my application status on the website changed, but at the bottom of the page, a "reply to offer of admission" link has appeared. Anyone else have that? I wonder if it means what I think it means...

Wow, that's torturous that you'd see that before a letter came through. Talk about raising the anxiety

  9. Well no news for me today...GRRR I hate Fridays....Well, for anyone else waiting to hear from a Boston school, don't be too shocked if you don't get any word today. A good portion of the city and surrounding areas are shut down due to the 12 inches on snow we got yesterday and today.

UMASS Boston decided to open late today (10am), stupid decision since a lot of other schools closed...THEN, apparently they realized that they had made a stupid decision and then preceded to close the campus at 2pm, sooo glad I decided not to go in today once they delayed opening.

  10. Merit-based or need-based? I've received nothing in the mail.

I don't think it's considered either. I didn't get it in the mail, it was an email sent out. I even emailed the director to ask for some clarification because it was a bit confusing. He said they send those out first so you have a better idea of the financials before you receive your decision. I took it as a good sign because they rejected me last year and I didn't get a letter like that before hand. However, it's not a very good offer, I have one from Wake Forest that's $10,000 more.

Just to clarify, it's from the grad program in arts and sciences and not the divinity school.
