  1. Hello! I've heard so much about the cleanliness problems with co-ops, so which would you say are the most "clean" or reasonable? I have a preference for closest to campus, specifically Evans Hall, and reasonably clean. I like the social aspect of co-ops, don't mind small parties, but of course don't want to live in a frat house. Which would you recommend? Thanks!!!
  2. UC Berkeley Statistics MA or Cornell Operations Research M.Eng? What I want to do: I want to work in the industry as a statistician after grad school. I just want the best education possible that allows me to do this, especially since I am not doing a PhD, can I still achieve the statistician job with just a masters? I really want to know your opinion of which school has a better reputation and which school gets more attention when the resume gets to a manager's desk. Location: My family and friends are in the East Coast, I went to a reputable East Coast school. However, I love the Bay area and wouldn't mind trying out living on the West Coast. So basically I don't have strong preference for East vs West Coast. I just much prefer somewhere warm, but since both masters are only one year long, I don't plan on staying in the freezing cold for long. Just not sure how much to weigh this location factor. Finances: I received a generous fellowship from Cornell that makes the cost half as much as UC Berkeley. What should I do? Only few more days to decide!!! Thanks for ANY input. =D
  3. I would really emphasize, again, to consider what you want to do and where you want to work AFTER the education. Let's say you want to work in the US after you graduate, probably better to go to the US school, so that traveling to interviews is easier (less interference with studies - trust me interviews can be draining) and there are more options to find a position in the US. I don't know much about Visas, but maybe easier to stay in the US if you're already in the US. Of course, if you prefer to work in Canada then why not go to the Canadian school.
  4. I'd love to help but I know nothing about Brown or Emory to comment, plus I am applying for masters in Stats, not Biostats. However, since the masters program should be taught by the same faculty as the PhD, I can't imagine the masters to have a drastic difference in reputation since Duke is highly respected and selective. I would guess that the masters is probably just the first year or two of the PhD curriculum, but you have to pay instead of them paying you, just IMO. Do you know if this is the case? Have you looked at the curriculum of the 3 programs?
  5. Hey just curious do you have other options to consider? Me too, I will post my results as soon as I get any notification.
  6. LittFox - I am sitting on masters from Berkeley, Columbia, and Cornell Operations Research. What about you? Any opinion on which I should go with?
  7. Biostat_prof - area you referring to Masters also being on a waitlist if you haven't heard from them? I have only seen decision results for their PhDs posting on this site so far, nothing for masters, could it be that they are still making decisions?
  8. Duke and the triangle area definitely have a lot of clinical trial research opportunities, and plenty of jobs too. However, keep in mind that that area is full of PhDs in statistics, biostatitics, and other scientists, so you will be competing against other PhDs for the same jobs as a masters. But Duke has a very strong and reputable program, so I think you will still be well trained. Hope that helps!
  9. monkey_business - yes thank you that helps a ton! that means I will be refreshing my email every 10 seconds , but at least your warned me to bring a phone charger
  10. bamacarolina - thanks for sharing! LittFox - I'm with ya. I'm sitting on other offers, but really want to know Stanford decision as soon as possible, so I know whether to factor it into my decisioning or not. =/ It's a bit strange to me that other schools have been very active on this forum, but not Stanford.
  11. I heard nothing so far. Just wondering if anyone has any communication with them. Thanks!
  12. I did not to apply to any of the schools on your list except for Columbia, and I heard back couple of weeks ago. Though I know that schools are still making decisions. Seems like most schools have finished reviewing the PhD applications, and now moving onto MS. I think that's the general pattern (PhD first then Masters). I am waiting for decisions from 3 more schools as well, so we're in it together!
  13. Thanks everyone! Your feedback was extremely helpful!
  14. Does anyone have thoughts on the Columbia MA program in Statistics? Anyone from the program can share your experience? What about the online option versus on campus? How will the quality of education be affected? Thanks!!!
  15. I have gotten into 3 masters programs (Berkeley, Columbia, Cornell). However I am waitlisted for my top choice PhD program - Duke. I know that I am high on the waitlist for Duke and I really want to get in. The department head asks if I have received offers from other schools. Should I tell them about my offers to the masters programs? Will it help or hurt? I'm worried that they may think I'm not serious about PhD, when I totally am. At the same time, will they value that fact that I got into competitive masters programs, one of which (Berkeley) is theoretical? How did you answer the question when asked about what programs you applied to or got into, during interviews, on the application, or through emails? Thanks!!!
