    SSHRC

Sorry to hear that. I e-mailed SSHRC last week to ask about the difference between "recommended not funded" and "you have been added to a waiting list". No answer yet.

Does anyone have any info from previous years (or this year) on funding coming through for people on waitlists?

    SSHRC

Hello all, got my letter this week and wanted to contribute to the information sharing. Applied via the external stream, will be attending an overseas uni next year (have not yet begun doctoral work) for history/sociology. Initial score, 23.5, final score 20.0. Offered "super SSHRC", will be turning it down in favour of the 4-year 20k version because I'm very attached to the uni I'll be attending next year. So, some money back in the pot for anyone in my 'subsection' on the waitlist. Something I find odd: In my case, if I stayed in Canada I'd get more money. However, if I stayed in Canada, my studies would also be subsidized by the Canadian/Provincial government (provincial support of public post-secondary institutions). Seems very strange that you can't take the larger award to international institutions where you are responsible for paying all costs associated with your studies... Anyone know why this is? Has anyone heard of someone being able to keep the super SSHRC at a non-Canadian school? I'm wondering about the last question because I remember reading that the larger award could only be taken outside the country in "exceptional circumstances" and I'm wondering what that might constitute. Thanks to all who have been posting information and updates - really helped during the protracted waiting period!

Unfortunately, my partner & I both applied independently, so no info possible from our last school, and SSHRC hasn't sent results to our new (overseas) schools. I feel like we have been stuck in a holding pattern for over a month now...any sign of compassion from SSHRC would make such a difference!

    SSHRC

This is insane. My partner and I are both waiting for letters (attending a non-Canadian school next year, and they haven't received anything from SSHRC), and now it's going to be another week at least?! Chad Gaffield did a talk at my school last year for those holding awards from SSHRC and bemoaned the fact that after money goes out, SSHRC has little contact with, or feedback from, students who benefit from the awards. I think this is a fair point, however, I'm not sure if Chad is ready to hear some feedback about the tardiness of the process this year. Seriously, if they had any thoughtfulness or care in them, they would at least try to do some 'damage control' on the lateness of the decisions (assuming they couldn't control that part) - they could find a way to get results out more quickly using electronic means, for example. I guess SSHRC is just another bureaucracy happily disconnected from those it serves... Sad.

Congrats to everyone who has received a SSHRC this year! I'm still waiting... will be attending a UK uni this autumn, so it's either contact the uni and hope that they know what they're looking if I ask after SSHRC results, or wait for the letter. A Big Thank You to those who have shared their stories here - although this waiting is really taking a toll, the letter seems to be the only way to be 100% sure of results. A little story from someone from my MA cohort: this person is also beginning doctoral work in the autumn, and knows someone who works for SSHRC. Last Monday, they got notice from their 'insider' that they were on the successful list. The next day (Tuesday, when the results first went out to DGS), this person got an e-mail from their grad adviser notifying them they did not get a SSHRC (recommended, but not funded). A little investigation later and it seems that there were funding decisions being made right up to the last minute for the doctoral SSHRCs. Not much consolation to those not receiving SSHRC because of budget cuts, but I'm hoping schools can come through to offer support, particularly for those whose research was recommended for funding... Good luck to all, I'm hoping hoping hoping that since a poster from my town got their MA letter last Friday that ours will arrive this week!
