  1. There is tremendous consistency in the rankings. Because they're all about peer-review, and a lot of what people know is what they've read in rankings before, there's not usually much movement.

While I agree that departments mentioned above are on the rise, their movement in the rankings might depend on their approaches. For example, UMass, Notre Dame and others are building mostly with junior hires. Cornell, also, has great junior people. Traditionally assistant professors, regardless of quality, don't affect the rankings much. Because Duke and Irvine decided to focus more on recruiting senior stars, they might see more of a shift. Of course, this is all conjecture. Only time will tell.

Interesting to have a more inside perspective. Thanks!

  2. Any speculations on who will move up or down?

I can't pretend to know about the field in general, but I'll make a couple predictions based on my experience:

    1. Cornell goes up. Every professor I've talked to says they're getting better and better.

    2. Duke goes down. Losing some people like David Brady hurts. They're rebuilding.

    3. Notre Dame moves up. There's been a pretty good buzz about that program.

    4. Berkeley drops from #1. The state budget there is a mess and the program is suffering. They won't drop far though.

Again, this is just speculation based on conversations with faculty at different programs. Don't take it too seriously.

  3. BA in Human Geography, MA in Demography with focus on life course (early adulthood) and social stratification.  So Sociological demography.

Perhaps we should set-up one of those "profile result" threads that other disciplines have

Are you planning on working with Daniel Lichter?

  4. What do you mean by "tailoring the SOP"? What exactly does need to be different for each school? Please be explicit.

I'll put my two cents in on this one.

You're applying to specific programs, not to a field in general. In my feedback and discussions with different programs, your fit in the program becomes the most important aspect once you clear cuts for GRE and GPA, etc.

When "tailoring" the SOP, you need to explain why you are a good fit for THAT program, not just any program. Discuss why you would benefit from being in that program, and how you will contribute to them. Mention specific research centers or programs at the school that interest you. I didn't mention specific faculty (I was advised this can be risky for various reasons), but I did mention specific areas that faculty worked in.

You may be "good enough" for a certain program, but if you don't fit (and if you don't tell them how/why you fit) then you won't get it.

  5. Easily worth the price. You can get info from the Orgtheory blog, along with comments, but $3 isn't much to pay for having the convenience of having it right there whenever you want to refer to it. Plus, the additional chapters come in really handy for planning ahead! Once you're admitted into a program you'll be asking questions about the next step. This book can help!

  6. Wow 27,500!  Congrats!!

I had a skype with Cornell today and was notified that I got a scholarship (thanks to scandinavia) for the first year, which means no extra heavy work load!

So if anyone is looking for a roomie in Ithaca - here I am!

I got accepted to Cornell too! GREAT funding right?? I haven't decided where I'm going. It'll be very hard decision. Are you visiting?

  7. Is anyone planning on declining their offer of admission?

I'm not decided yet, but I think I end up there. The visit isn't until the end of March, so many students won't decide until then.

    Were you waitlisted?

  8. Hey! Who all is planning on going to the visit day? The more research I do, the more I'm convinced that Indiana is one of the best programs in the country.

Hope to see many of you there!

  9. First post. I've been stalking this site for a long time.

I've been accepted to three great programs, with great funding, but it'll be a tough choice!

There are so many variables to consider, but I think the fit is the most important if choosing between similar ranked programs with sufficient funding.

It'll be tough, very I'm in a position I can't really complain about!
