Thanks for thinking of all of us Bostonians today. I was nowhere near Copley Square but my sister is a nurse and volunteers each year in the medical tent at the finish line. She was not hurt but had a difficult day, to say the least. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims and their families.

FYI: Just got our mail and nothing from NU. More waiting... : (

So, I don't think we'll hear anything from NU today online because you're right...they are closed. However, someone who called was told that the "remainder" of the applicants will hear shortly because they sent letters out on Friday. To me, that says I'm getting a rejection letter...probably today because I live in the Boston area. We'll see what happens.

So, for those of you still waiting to hear from NU, here's what I know... Apparently, groups of apps were given to several faculty members to review and the deadline for their recommendations to be returned to the admissions office isn't until April 15th! Now, the e-mail I received several weeks ago said I would hear by April 15th "at the latest". The 15th is a holiday here in MA and the university is closed...not sure what that means for us. The results board has been very quiet with NU news for the past few weeks! Good luck to those still waiting!

Good luck with your decision, rcavemek! Two great programs to choose from! Maybe you should think about where you eventually want to end up after graduation? MGH will allow you to make great contacts in Boston while Columbia will do the same for the NYC area. Obviously, I don't think you can go wrong either way. Congrats!

I agree, keeping it vague is definitely best. Don't feel guilty, the school will simply extend your offer to another student. You absolutely need to do what is best for you. Good luck!

I would probably shoot e-mails to the department heads of the three schools you mentioned. I believe USU's classes are pretty well-known within the SLP world and you should be able to get answers relatively quickly. I'm currently taking a language development class through USU and made sure that Northeastern would accept it before I enrolled. It also did not have the same exact name as the class NU listed as a pre-req. The last thing you would want is to spend the money on these classes and find out later they don't count towards the program you want to attend. Getting it "in writing" via e-mail is always a good idea. I do know that the phonetics course I took at NU (as a pre-req) had very little info re: phonological disorders, so you may need to search a little for a class that includes both in the syllabus. I keep hearing, through several different avenues, that NU is still reviewing apps and that they have about 3-4 people looking at well over 400 applicants for the 35-40 spots. I just wish I knew more about the specific process. NU is my ONLY choice...(I know, I know...but I do have my reasons)...so I'm in limbo about my plans for September. (Aren't we all?) ; ) Good luck, eekg23!

I agree, Katieliz456. There are just so many factors that need to be considered when determining what you can afford (or, rather, should pay) for grad school. My husband has a job that we wouldn't want him to leave and I have family/child care issues to consider. There are no state universities in the Boston area that have SLP programs. When considering future mortgage issues (if that is a concern for someone) you should think about where you may end up. For instance, It's a lot more expensive to live on the east/west coast in the US. Everyone's situation is different and you need to make the best decision for your own future. Gingersnap18: I was wondering how NU was handling their financial awards since they're apparently reviewing the apps in batches. I guess the only thing they could do was hold financial info until the cohort has been set...but...I think they risk losing students to other schools (like you!) How can you make an informed decision when you don't have all of the information? Good luck with your decision!

Matrixgrl09... I'm glad you got *some* info from Northeastern! I wrote to them last week and they basically said they would let everyone know by April 15th. I also heard from someone at the University that they haven't looked at all of the apps yet. I am going crazy, I would just like to know...either way! I don't really understand how they can accept people as they look through the applications...does that mean those of us at the end of the pile (for whatever reason) are at a disadvantage? I mean, I know they typically only enroll 35-40 (even though last year's class was closer to 60) so what happens if they offer all of the seats early on and run out of offers? Ugh. NU wrote back with a pretty standard response. They say they're still reviewing apps and we will know by April 15th at the latest.

I'm in the same boat. I wrote to them early on Friday basically asking if we haven't heard have we been placed on a wait list. I haven't heard anything. Hmmm. I KNOW they're really busy and there is (assumingly) a method to their madness but I do wish they'd just tell us if we're on a wait list. At least we'd know where we stand! : )

Hey Jackie, like I said...I took the classes you need at NU. I'm currently taking Language Development at USU. This class consists of three exams (which must be proctored), 9 chapter reviews (due on Sunday nights, end up being 4-6 page papers), a language assessment project (focused on MLU) and a couple of easier smaller assignments. It's more work than I would have thought for an on-line class but I've read that this particular professor can be "difficult". Since you're highly motivated to get these classes done so you can begin the program in September I'm sure you'll be successful! Are you working FT? PT? Or will you have the summer off?

Oh, and I know NU has a Speech Science class AND a Speech and Hearing Science (which I'm currently taking). So they may not accept the USU's Speech Science...but who knows! : )

Yeah, Jackie...I would just send a link to Dr. O'Neil and get her approval (you're planning on attending NU in the fall, right?) She seemed very familiar with the USU courses and responded very quickly. That way you'll have the approval in writing if it ever becomes an issue, which I doubt! Good luck!

Oh, and Dr. O'Neil approved the class via e-mail before I signed up for it. I wanted to make sure NU would accept it as a pre-req.

Hi Jackie, I'm taking Language Development at Utah State this semester. The class is (surprisingly) a lot of work. Not so much difficult work...but a lot of it. I'm pretty sure they have the classes you need but I don't know specifically about their summer schedule. The class was much cheaper than other options in Boston. I've taken all of my other prereqs at NU and USU was less than 1/2 the cost (about $775?) Anyway, just keep in mind that most, but not all, classes at USU require you to set up a proctor for exams. Luckily, there was a proctor at a library about 5 minutes from my house. Good luck! : )
