  1. So I had my interview at ODU, and it looks like I'm informally accepted So that's a weight off my shoulders. For anyone who wants to know (stuff that I didn't realize) it's a 6 semester program with a mandatory thesis, and they require 2 statistics classes so I need to take another one . Also, for this school apparently GRE scores matter a lot, but it should kind of match up with GPA and course rigor. So for example, Dr. Bountress said that one year they let in a girl with a 2.5 GPA but with a super impressive high GRE. Apparently the reason for the discrepancy was that she was really smart but not motivated and thus didn't do well in the program. So apparently my 3.5 gpa didn't work against me because I took rigorous courses, my Com-Dis GPA was a lot higher, and my GRE scores were quite good. I'm surprised I liked ODU as much as I did- the area's not fantastic but it is a metropolitan area so it has a wide variety of practicum placement sites which is good. The professors that I met seemed nice and they have really high pass rates over the past 30 years on the Praxis (like 98% or something like that) which is a good sign. Their website isn't the greatest and when I was calling about admissions questions before I applied the person I talked to on the phone seemed bored and uninterested (i mean I don't blame her, but still it was my first impression of the school...) So it wasn't high on my list of places I wanted to go. However now if it's the only school I get into, I think I'll be happy there because I had a really good in-person experience. (also in-state tuition with a graduate assistantship? holla!) also, congrats kcald716 on ECU!!!!!!!! that's awesome

  3. You still have 4 schools to hear back from! UNC-CH is soooooooo competitive, tons of qualified applicants didn't get in. Hopefully you can try not to take that one to heart- the admissions process is super random. Sometimes you get rejected from schools you think you will get into, and sometimes you get accepted to schools that you never thought you could get in to. I am hoping you do get accepted to a school you want to go to, but if you don't the world is not over. I think there are schools that accept spring admission? I just googled "SLP spring admissions" the first link on the page had some good info
  4. haha fair enough- I've only been to Richmond 4 or 5 times myself and basically all I do is go to Short Pump and Cary St....I'm sure there's a lot more to Richmond than that!
  5. The music scene is amazing- if you're a fan of the Avett Brothers, it seems like they come here once a year and there's always shows around $10 at the Southern Cafe and Music Hall and for some reason I've been really lucky and keep winning concert tickets so I've gotten to go to a lot of good shows this year for free. There are so many restaurants that I don't think it would be possible to eat at all of them...my favorites are Little Johns, Belmont BBQ, and Now and Zen but I'm sure you'll find your own favorites. There's also tons of local artists and musicians...The VA Film Festival is based in Charlottesville every year and I would highly recommend either attending some films or volunteering with it- I've done both and I've gotten to meet some well known actors and directors and I always have a blast. Also a venue called The Paramount on the Downtown Mall (a pedestrian mall) sometimes shows premieres of shows for free on their big screen and they have costume parties and stuff like that. The premiere of Downton Abby (idk if you watch it) was awesome because there were tons of people dressed in period costumes. There are at least 4 main shopping centers (Barracks, Seminole Square, Albemarle Square, and Stonefield) and a Mall within a 15 min drive....And there are mountains to hike, slopes to ski/snowboard...it's really an awesome area. I love VA so much. If you're into history at all it's also a great area for that, you've got to check out Monticello and Ash Lawn. And there are great Vineyards to go to as well...I really can't sing Charlottesville's praises enough. I think people sometimes don't realize that VA has so much stuff to offer...and 4 seasons! a major bonus. Also everywhere else in VA is usually only a 2.5-3 hour drive. So that includes Washington DC, and Va Beach.
  6. I'm an undergrad at UVA majoring in Com Dis, and I'm applying to UVA for grad school although it's not my top choice. In my opinion the major positive aspect about UVA's program is the quality of the faculty. Every single professor and clinical instructor I have met has been warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and willing to help you. If you get in your adviser will probably be Dr. Filip Loncke who is like a gift sent from heaven. He will help you in any way he can and he's so approachable and wonderful. The program takes Track 1 and Track 2 candidates, so if you are a Track 2 (major other than Com Dis) you will have to spend some time taking classes with undergrads. The reason UVA isn't my top choice is because it's very centered around younger clients, which is fine, but I really want to be able to get more experience with adult clients. I feel like it's not the best fit for me in that regard although I do love it here. Also, as an undergrad you definitely get the whole college experience but I've talked to a couple of grad students who have told me they aren't really connected to UVA at all. They basically stick to one building (where the classes, the professors, and the on-campus clinic are). I'm not sure if all grad programs are like that, but I feel like they're missing out on exploring UVA and Charlottesville, which is an amazing city. There are 2 major hospitals (UVA hospital and Martha Jefferson hospital) and a ton of schools in the area to do school placements, as well as the on-campus clinic
  7. HA you would think that, right? I got my waitlist letter at 11:00 pm on a sunday. I feel like maybe no day is safe...
  8. haha thanks It's all so competitive that sometimes it's hard to stay positive. we will get in! we will get in! we will get in! sending positive vibes your way.
  9. Jmarti, well if I told them I didn't have any plans it would have made it easy to reject me, so I guess they were just making sure they even needed to bother spending time to review my application.
  10. Me too...I tried to take my mind off it by throwing snowballs, making snowmen, and going sledding. It almost worked :/
  11. Jmarti, I'm right there with you. Nail biting! I haven't heard anything yet.....I'm scared because I'm sure that not all people applying are using this site, so that means more people have probably gotten accepted than just those two...But hey. we won't know until we know! haha I'm hoping for good news for us both
  12. I hadn't asked them any question- I hadn't contacted them since I applied on Jan 20. They sent that e-mail yesterday morning to me personally, which is why I feel like decisions may be coming soon....but then again, we all know that decisions are coming "soon" haha. But whether that means this week, next week, or some other week....I have no clue.
  13. jmarti37, I got an e-mail from USF saying they are making final decisions now. The only reason I got the e-mail is because they wanted to check to make sure I had plans for taking Neuroanatomy (haha oops!) The e-mail didn't say when the decisions would be sent out, but I'm hoping for later this week!
  14. Yeah of course you ask me any questions that you'd like If I don't know the answer I can find out for you or put you in touch with someone who can
  15. And congratulations to everyone out there who's getting acceptance letters!!! you guys must be so stoked
  16. I just discovered this site...and now have a new obsession! I'm an undergrad in the Comm Dis program at UVA (the professors are amazing for anyone who wants to know) and I applied to UVA, USF, Vanderbilt, UNC-CH, and ODU. So far I got wait listed at UNC, and last week the department chair of ODU called me and asked me to come down to get a tour of the facilities and ask him questions about the program...I'm not sure if that's like an official interview? especially since apparently I'm supposed to be asking all the questions! lol anyway I'll just be glad to get in somewhere! I thought my stats were pretty good but after reading y'alls, now I'm not so sure :/ GPA: 3.49 Major GPA: 3.87 GRE: 166 verbal, 152 quant, 4.0 writing I honestly think my strengths are my letters of recommendation because I have really great professors who I love and who thankfully love me back! Hopefully that and my statement of purposes will pull me through.....I'm getting super nervous! As far as advice, for USF if I am accepted I have to take a Neuroanatomy course related to speech/language because UVA doesn't offer that course at all. And USF is the only school that I'm applying to that requires that course as a pre-req for the program...I didn't want to spend $1500 on a course to not even get accepted so I put it off. But now the summer course offerings that I can find are so limited or too expensive...any suggestions of reasonably priced online neuroanatomy courses (or courses on a VA college campus somewhere) that I would still be able to apply for? I've only found 2 options....USF is my number one choice but the cost of this extra course is making me seriously reconsider.
