  1. Yeah, it would have nice to be going to waterloo too. Professor O'Gorman and Harris both seemed very nice and understanding when I let them know my decision. I mean I guess having two wonderful programs accept you is a wonderful problem to have, but still disappointing when I can only pursue one exciting opportunity. Hopefully my declining made someone's day by getting them off the waitlist. My offer was 15 k in the form of TAships, RAships and scholarships over 3 semesters. And I apparently got into both the co-op option and non, i didn't inquire as to whether the funding would be the same for both. I might try to keep in touch with you through gradcafe if that's alright because I am still interested to hear about the program and all the cool stuff you'll get up to in it.

Also! I forgot to mention, I think you made the right choice. So don't worry about it so much, I know you really wanted to go to waterloo but SFU was better for you. (IMO)

Yeah, definitely someone is probably dying of happiness. Yeah, I just talked to Professor Gorman two days ago. Yeah of course. Let me know how SFU is! Yeah, I got the same deal. I think we were first batch of acceptances to come out.

  3. Officially declined the waterloo offer today. Just waiting on the official offer from SFU so I accept it and have everything be settled now. As happy as I am with the decision, declining still feels hard. All that time and stress went into applying and waiting only to have to say no to one of the offers i really wanted :(.

aww! I knew sfu was the better choice for you. but still would have been nice to have seen you at waterloo. I accepted my offer at waterloo. what was your funding?

  4. I am definitely hoping that the program being underated and obscure works to our advantage. I only heard about it because there was an email circulated through the Canadian Communication Association about it, my friend and classmate from my current program is a member and saw it and forwarded it me because she thought I might be interested. One of my very good friends is currently at waterloo and yet I had still not heard of the program before that. It definitely seems like somethign that's still not very well known, but it seems like a good sort of program for waterloo to have to improve its humanities offerings. I agree that the rhetoric option seems decent too, although I'm not sure it seems as in line with Waterloo's general reputation. I think having a hands on degree from what is basically canada's best engineering/technology school might have more cache. I have been really itching to do something more hands on and constructive in the past few years, with critical theory it often feels like it's all inconsequential estoerica that only tears down, this might be a nice antidote. It really will be a hard choice between this and SFU for a phd (mcgill finally made their expected rejection official today) really hard. SFU is a great fit for me and what i do, but this program would give me an even wider base and new perspective on what I do. I'd just have so many more options both academically and career wise outside of academia I expect. I glanced over the critical media lab projects a while ago, I'll have to go refresh myself on what they've been doing while i wait to hear. I wonder how much longer it will be, the deadline was so late I wonder if it might be april...I really hope not.

Hi! sorry i am replying late, I got a tad bit busy. I'm starting to think they won't accept people until april.. just because the deadline was so late. SFU VS waterloo.. that seems like a hard choice. But you can always go back to do your phd, there's no rush. Plus, you have to give up a lot of time .. into doing a phd. My feeling is that XDM will be harder to get into. They were even talking about asking people to submit a portfolio of their work........so, I think we applied at the right time. I am honestly dying to know though, I go on quest literally everyday to check :*( no news yet. I just wish they would tell me...

  5. Hmm, you know, it never even occured to me to write separate letters for the co-op and non co-op option... I just gave them duplicate applications and am left it up to them. And, I will never be over theory. I am over merely writing and reading theory though. The XDM appeals to the phenomenologist in me, getting to experience theory in news ways by using it to craft material things just sounds awesome and a great way to get at ideas that might not be as evident when presented in the form of rational argument. Because the program is so different, but complimentary to, other reading and writing theory programs I've done I am very tempted to take a year or two off for the change of pace before applying to phds again with another MA to my name. The co-op program with a google headquarters so close to campus makes the nerdboy in me squee with delight when I think of all the possibilities. I should mention that critical theory of technology is my research interest so getting hands on experience so that i might be able to get a private sector research job would also just be amazing. I never thought waterloo would have something to make me this excited...

wow, it's really great to hear you talk about this just because I share similar feelings for the program.  Have you seen some of the projects they've done? Definitely interesting application of humanity theory. The work they have done in the critical media lab and co-op are definitely both attractive features of the program. The program is definitely underrated, I haven't met anybody who was applying for the program or met anybody who was aware of it. I think Rhetoric and Communication was an attractive choice as well, but I preferred XDM. It sounds like you will have a hard really decision to make. If I get into waterloo, I wouldn't hesitant at all. I just feel that Waterloo is the right place for me. I'm not really sure what I would do if I only got into Ryerson... that would be a tough choice. I might reapply to just Waterloo a second time. But hopefully.. my GPA, SOI AND LOR are good enough.

  6. I applied to both co-op and non co-op to see what happens and if i get two offers or not. Both seem to have advantages. And yes you're right, it's not something i thought existed in canada. I had eyed the MIT comp media studies program before but getting in there would be a nightmare i expect. I actually only found about the XDM program on Feb 1st after I thought I was done applying, it suits me so well that I sent frantic emails begging references to write one more letter for me. And yes, I have an MA, or am in the last stages of getting it any way, at the MRP stage at this point, finish in july. I am doing the Royal Roads hybrid online/in person MA in professional communication. I think there are certain paralells between it and Ryerson's commcult program, except that Ryerson is more of a known quantity. Although the prof supervising my MRP is also curently teaching at Ryerson I believe. All in all, Royal Roads has been a bit hit and miss for me but I seem to have made the most of it. I'm more of an exception than a rule for having rigorous theoretical background in my BA (UBC English Lit and Philosophy) and a keen interest in theory and academia. I am very much on tenderhooks waiting to hear because I don't know how much of a benefit my MA will be, I am hoping an MA is an MA and the school won't matter as much. I've done well, have an interesting research topic and managed to weasel myself a conference credit at a big american school's comm dept's grad student conference. I doubt you'll go wrong with either the XDM or CommCult and I think they'd compliment each other pretty well. Good luck, sorry for the massive post.

So, I'm guessing you wrote two letters of interest than? Oh wow, I kinda had a similar experience with the XDM program. The moment I read about it, I knew it was the program for me! I would be severely disappointed if I didn't get in. Right now I am specializing in cultural studies at Ryerson, so it seems only natural in a sense that I would continue my education at Ryerson. Although, I have great support systems at Ryerson, I just believe that XDM is the right program for me. I am basically done with theory and want to move into actually practicing the theory that I've learned. I think you have more than enough academic experience! It sounds like you would fit right into XDM. Although, I am sure it will be difficult for you to decide between another MA or a PHD. I was told last year by the program director that they are looking to expand the XDM program so its easier to get into XDM than it was in the past. Good luck to you as well!

  7. I've also applied, but I haven't heard back. It was the latest deadline (Feb 15th) so it's the one I'm least impatient about. Good luck though, it looks like an awesome program, it willl be a tough decision between it and a comm phd if i get into both. Did you apply for Co-op or non? I'll be sure to post as soon as I hear anything.

I applied for Co-op, which has its drawbacks.. since you aren't guaranteed funding anymore. What about you? Oh yeah XDM is definitely a unique program, I couldn't find anything else like it except in the states. I  also applied for CommCult at Ryerson. I had to hand in my application late because I did exchange and my marks hadn't been processed. So, I am a bit on edge. hahah... you've already done an MA degree, I'm guessing, since you've applied for your PHD? I'm sure having an MA degree already will separate you from the rest of us who applied with only an undergrad.
