That's what I was thinking too. It's possible that everyone on grad café right now is in the middle of the pack. Not going to be rejected out right initially, but not going to be extended an interview unless the first group of interviews go really badly or something. I imagine will here within a week or two, but sadly it seems like not much sooner?
Sry for typos voice-dictating due to injured thumb and too tired...
I am hoping we all get some positive news soon!
That makes sense. Do we know how many people are admitted to the program usually? I know like 200 apply...
Typically 6 are admitted.

Sorry if you guys already know this or it isn't helpful but, not everybody who's going to be accepted will get interviewed at some programs. Maybe that's the case for you guys, too?
It is very possible! Who knows?!

The other thing I am wondering -- some people have gotten interviews, right? Someone said a few days ago that "they were interviewing for MCC..."
But we haven't heard anyone say they got an interview here...
Yep! That was me who said they were interviewing. I called the department and asked and they mentioned they were in the midst of the first round of interviews. Maybe someone else could call and see what is going on? I would be surprised if no one from the Grad Cafe got an interview. I know it is not representative of the entire pool of applicants, but still...
The one she got was an official email---- she didn't email anyone/it didn't come from a POI
Thanks fiveby5! That makes me wonder if the applicants have been divided into different groups of rejects, first round, second round, etc. I know I'm speculating but I am just so tired of waiting! haha!
-
Yay thank so much for sharing! I was feverishly wondering who's rejection that was... Hopefully we'll all be 5 x 5 soon
I am really wondering why they are sending out rejections in groups? Did these people receive official rejections or did they just email and ask?

What is an acceptable amount of time to wait before inquiring about funding? It's been 14 days since I received the email to sit tight.
I know that patience is virtuous and next to godliness, however, I would like to know if I should start applying to jobs so I can have gainful employment come graduation. I suppose I should mention the fire is that I'm a dog groomer and I've been bitten twice in 2 weeks (a problem I've never experienced before in the 10 years I've been grooming...) and I guess I'm in a hurry to know if I can quit and sit on my savings til May/June or should I plan to continue grooming until I move to NC.
I am still waiting to hear back from one of the programs I was accepted to about funding as well. It seems some programs deliberate on funding after admissions. My program told me I would hear back on funding just before the April 15th deadline. I hope this helps!

I saw a couple of posts like that on the results forum. From your sig -- have you been waitlisted from nyu mcc phd? or another program?
thanks a lot! fingers crossed here since I haven't been rejected yet!
wonder why they'd reject in groups... just to mess with our nerves more, probably.
Based on what they told me from my phone call, perhaps they are not rejecting everyone at once since interviews seem to be grouped. My sense is that based on how this first group of interviews goes they may extend more. I am not certain, because the person I spoke to was rather ambiguous.
-
I will ask again -- has anyone been invited for an interview at NYU MCC?
I called them yesterday and their response on the interview process was a bit ambiguous. They said they are currently going through the first round of interviews and seemed to imply that there might be a second round. However, like I said, I couldn't tell if all requests have been sent out or if more will be sent out depending upon this first round.

Thanks! I was very pleased to get into all 3 of the programs I applied to. My focus is political comm. I'm planning to take as long as is reasonable to decide. I'm excited about the prospect of working with Mitchell McKinney and Ben Warner at Missouri, Robin Rowland at Kansas, or Jennifer Mercieca and Kirby Goidel at Texas A&M. I have a more rhetorical focus which makes KU a great fit, but I also feel like I could become a very well rounded political comm scholar at Missouri. I will definitely post here once I decide. Congratulations on some excellent offers! Do you know when you will decide?
Hi there! Will you be going to A&M's recruitment weekend? I am!
-
FYI, NYU MCC is in the midst of short list interviews. That's all the info I have. Good luck!
Does that mean they have sent out requests or are they preparing to send out interview requests?
-
I applied to Film Studies programs at
UT-Austin
UC-Santa Cruz
UW- Madison
Iowa
Kansas
Based on posts probably not accepted at UTA and Wisconsin. No interviews at either.
Haven't heard anything about the film departments of the other schools though.
Did you apply to the Media Studies program at UT Austin? If so, they have already sent out notifications. But, if you applied to one of the RTF programs they still might not have sent out notifications. I would contact the programs and ask! Good luck!
-
I would wait to give them a decision before you know whether or not they are going to fund you. I definitely think that you shouldn't do a PhD program without funding (tuition waiver and stipend). Crossing my fingers that the funding comes through!
-
Now that it is officially late February, has anyone heard from NYU MCC's PhD program regarding interviews?
-
Hey thanks for your answer CaitlinMarie! When did you talk to them? And I guess that means interviews could/should come in any moment...
Just last week so I think you are right, interview requests should be going out relatively soon!
-
Any new on NYU's cinema studies department, by any chance?
Sorry! Just MCC...
-
Any news on NYU'S MCC PhD programme? Has anyone heard about interviews yet?
I contacted the department and decisions on interviews have not been made. They will send out requests for interviews mid-late February.
-
Looks like Michigan is sending acceptances. Anyone here get a yes?
I got waitlisted by Michigan! It is one of my top choices so I am crossing my fingers someone doesn't accept the offer!
-
Seems a lot of schools (but not all) are cutting back this year, as the applicant pools continue to grow. To be honest, unless something changes, I really feel for the people who will be applying in 3-4 years.
It is pretty alarming, even for the students who are accepted given that funding is being cut left and right. Luckily, especially in comparison to other fields in the social sciences, communication and media studies seem to be doing decently in terms of money.
Thanks for the info about NYU, CaitlinMarie! I was getting a bit nervous because I think last year they held interviews earlier.
You are welcome! I hope we both get interviews!
-
Congrats! Did they say how many were accepted? Originally they said something like 6 but you never know
Thanks!
The letter said that only 6 were accepted! In the past I was told it was generally 8 but this year they dropped the number to 6.
-
-
Had you already given an interview or were you accepted without one?
Also, congratulations!
Thank you!
Are you asking about an interview for UT Austin's program? I did not do an interview with them, but to my knowledge that program doesn't generally conduct interviews.
-
Congrats!! That IS a great problem to have!
Silence. I'm waiting on them for film and media.
Is that for the PhD program? I applied for MA and am still waiting...
Congrats, and good luck!
By the by, is anyone else having issues with the application status check website for Northwestern? Hasn't worked for me in days.
Yes! It was for the Media Studies PhD program.
-
Where are you seeing this? I've received nothing yet and my online status is the same.
I received a letter from the program's graduate advisor telling me that I was accepted. It is possible they haven't gotten to everyone yet.
-
Decisions for UT Austin's Media Studies program are out!!! Any news on UPenn or NYU?
-
Hello all!
I was wondering if perhaps anyone else on the forum had applied and been accepted to Texas A&M's Comm program. I am going to the recruitment weekend in March and would love to get in contact with other prospective students.
