  1. Is anyone else applying to Dal and using the online method? I'm a bit confused about if you can submit all your documents there or if you still have to mail most of them. I've been struggling with the site for days! And I'm also kind of confused about why Alberta keeps pushing their date back! I just want to get everything done and hopefully have a somewhat relaxing Christmas!
  2. Thanks everyone! My grades are quite high so I'm kind of hoping that will give me an advantage, for certain schools at least. I'm hoping to get some experience working with adults soon, as all my volunteer experience has been with kids so far!
  3. I have a question: for people who are still in university, how much volunteer work do you usually do every week? I've been doing 4 hours a week and it's definitely adding up, but I can't help but feel like I won't stand a chance against people who aren't in school and have more time to devote to volunteering. This entire process is so stressful and I can't help but worry I'm not doing enough! Does anyone else feel the same way?
  4. I used the question feature on the application and they told me that the form is available here: http://www.mcgill.ca/scsd/programs/slp/how-apply/application. It appears that you need to download it from that page. It's the second bullet point. I hope that helps!
  5. Once you submit your personal information, your referee info, and your payment, it takes you back to the application screen. Then you can upload additional documents. I'm having a bit of trouble opening the PDF form under "Additional Documents Required," though! It appears that the link doesn't work. Has anyone else had this problem?
  6. McGill's application opened yesterday! I started my application and I feel so nervous and excited about it. Who else is applying there?
  7. Okay, I'll wait until I get my written scores before I REALLY panic. Good luck to you with your applications!
  8. I took the GRE on August 28th and I am already freaking out about how I did. I have never, ever been strong in math, and although I studied for 4 months, I scored in the 20th percentile . I truly did the best I could do, and I'm almost surprised I even did that well. However, for verbal, I scored in the 93th percentile. I haven't gotten my written scores back yet, though I felt really good about them (essay writing is my thing). I want to apply to U of A, Dal, U of T, Western, and McGill. U of A is my first choice. If I don't get in anywhere this year, I will probably take the GRE again and just keep volunteering.
  9. I'll keep that in mind! That seems like an overly harsh rule to have, but I guess that's how it is
  10. I'm going to be applying to U of A for 2015 and I also just realized that they changed that prerequisite. Now I'm panicking, because before this, I had all my prereqs done, but now I have to take a language acquisition course through distance education and I hadn't planned for that before. I really wish they hadn't done that, but it was probably just another way to rule more applicants out.
  11. I just wanted to say that I'm really excited for all of you! I'll be going through this next year, and reading this thread has gotten me accustomed to the terror I have to look forward to. Good luck!
  12. This option might not work for everyone, but here's what I'm doing. I have on very solid reference from a prof I do research with, but I wasn't sure who to choose for the other one. I thought about all my professors and decided on one who is very well-respected in her field and whose classes I've done well in. I went to her office hours and talked to her about grad school. I asked her for advice on how to choose referees and she actually offered to be mine! Of course, that's what I was hoping for, but I didn't want to be so obvious. She said that one of her referees back in the day was a professor whose class she did really well in but who she didn't really know much better than that, and that she'd say whatever I wanted her to in the reference letter. She also said she's done this with other students who have very strong academics but who aren't the loudest in class.
  13. Okay, I'll try that thread. Thanks! I have looked at Magoosh and they seem to a good bet.
  14. Hey everyone! I'm finishing up my third year of university right now, so I'll be applying for a number of programs starting in October of this year. I know there isn't a ton of time left, but does anyone have any suggestions for ways I could try to improve my chances of getting in? How do my chances of getting in sound? I'm going to be applying to the University of Alberta, Dalhousie, McGill, U of T, and UWO. I have a cumulative average of 89.5. Only finals will tell for sure, but my average for this past year is probably going to be around 91-92. I'm a research assistant with a Linguistics professor who works with a language in Papua New Guinea. Last year I volunteered for a 6-week program where I read with students who had speech-language difficulties. I also volunteered with an SLP a few times, and I'm going to be meeting with her again starting pretty soon. I'll also been doing the reading program again. I've done volunteer work with Canadian Blood Services for about two years now. I know that doesn't have a lot to do with SLP, but at least it's something! I'm really nervous for the GRE, since I'm not very strong in math. I'm taking it at the end of August and I'll be studying non-stop all summer. I'm hoping that even if my GRE score isn't all that stunning, I'll be able to make up for it with other things.
  15. Thanks for the info. I'll definitely keep that in mind. It's things like that that us Canadians don't always know about!
  16. The only real reason I wanted to apply to the US was to improve my chances, and it would be a last resort as I'd rather spend less money if I can. I think my application will be pretty strong, but I also can't know who I'm up against that year! I just want to be certain I'll get in somewhere. Thanks for the advice!
  17. Thanks everyone. I have read on CASLPA's website that they have a mutual recognition agreement with ASHA, but I'd still want to double check before going somewhere. 20 schools sounds like a bit much! I do hope 5 is enough for me, but in Canada things may be a bit different since we have fewer schools to choose from in the first place.
  18. I'm Canadian and I'm planning on applying to 5 Canadian schools (all of the English ones except UBC). I'll be applying for 2015 so it's quite a while away, but I'd like to prepare in advance to make sure I have the best possible chance of getting in somewhere. I'm wondering if this seems like enough; should I look into American schools as well to better my chances?
