  1. are people allowed to know their placement? I'd love to know where I am going in Morocco, but have no clue who/how to ask....sigh

Snuffleupagus, I would email James Miller, the head of MACECE (j.miller@macece.ma).  He's always the one I contact and he usually gets back to me.  Alternately, try Jermaine Jones (jjones@iie.org) at IIE.  Hope you hear something!

  2. Quick question to accepted Fulbrighters: in your snail mail letter from the Fulbright Scholarship Board, did you receive any other materials besides the letter congratulating you? I ask because mine was completely ripped open when I received it, so I want to be sure I got everything I was supposed to...

I got mine today and it was simply the 1-page congrats letter.  No worries; it looks like you got everything.

  3. You don't have to reapply this weekend...you have until Oct! There's time to rest and recover. Why not give it another shot?

Excellent point.  CrystalDee, there's no need to make a decision now.  You (and all those who don't get it this year) need time to heal before deciding what comes next.  I always think that, for academics, the summer is a time for catharsis.  Take that time and *then* decide.  For what it's worth.

Remember: it took me 10 years to finally get into a PhD program.  There were times when I literally thought I couldn't take another rejection letter.  I simply thought I would disappear.  But here I am.  And here you are too.  Take the time to heal, and then get back up on that horse, whatever horse is right for you right now.

  4. It is weird how a place can do that to you. I fell in love with the Blue Ridge Mountain areas of the Carolinas, I'd love to live there some day. Unfortunately my political and social values don't fit in too well in that area, though, so that makes it a bit uncomfortable.

After my first summer in Fes, I knew it had become a part of my soul.  It's weird, really, but that's how it is.  I simply love it.

  5. Oh, it really is lovely! Summers are warm and nice; and there is this mix of modern and ancient architecture. And it's only like 80 miles from Helsinki!

I love it there! It feels much more like home to me than Oklahoma. Lol!!

I have no doubt, CrystalDee, that your commitment to and passion for this place will bring you back again and again.  Fulbright be damned, you're going to do what you set out to.  I believe that.

  6. Morocco people - any news on where you will be going? should we make a group so we can let each other know? weeeeee.

I would love to have one.  I'm a research grant recipient, but I would love to crash the ETA's party!  mind if I tag along?

Congrats to everyone who has heard this week, whatever the news.  At least now we can begin to make more definitive plans and move forward with our lives.  And always remember that we *do* have important things to do with our lives, even if Fulbright doesn't seem to think so (this year).

Hang in there, Middle East applicants!  Those emails are coming; I can feel it!

  7. I got mine late yesterday afternoon when I was stuck in endless airport delays (damn the sequester, CrystalDee!). I'm still n shock and trying to catch my breath: I got it. Research grant to Morocco. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone else in DC and Rabat!

  8. I feel like as bizarre as that is, you could have some real fun with it....Passport size photo of you with a fez on, giving them a thumbs up while holding a tagine in one arm. Perhaps a wink as well?

Hehehe... can all of those accepted to Morocco promise to send pics with feses?  Or at least take a group pic wearing them?

As creepy as I find the idea of sending a photo, I've often heard of this.  I was asked by one of my grad programs to submit one between my admission and my matriculation.  I sent one with me waaaaay back in the distance.

  9. You guys will still hang out with me, right?  I have another 3-4 weeks to go still.

The way things are going, what with my signposts and all, you'll find out before I do!  So ya, I'll still be around.

  10. Can any of the Moroccan finalists confirm the orientation dates for me? I lost the email so I'm not sure, I think it was June 9 to 13? Thanks and cross our fingers that we'll hear today!

My email said June 29 - July 1.  I'm a research grant applicant; are there different orientations for ETA and research people?

  11. CrystalDee, that's really a bummer. Very sad to hear that, since we were all rooting for you and you obviously have an attitude that would make you an excellent Fulbrighter. I really hoppe you get bumped up. bryan jenkins and lls11, that sucks. But I hope we all bounce back and can not let our confidence in ourselves be shaken.

It was an exciting and busy day on campus - class, frantic translation and editing, long discussions with professors about my research project and possible leads to track down, all on a blustery Chicago day. I finally got a chance to check my mail to be greeted with a big, fat NS. Didn't make it, guys. I'm bummed out about it, and of course I'll always wonder what I would've done in China, but I'm just going to keep on truckin', apply again, and try to see the silver lining in the fact that I won't have to be away from my wife for a year.

Thanks everyone for being such great comrades in this process. It's really great to have you smart, interesting, compassionate people to connect with here.

Inshallah next time around... and humdillah for your presence here.

  12. I fell off my bed.

I'm a small-town Ohio kid who has never left the country....but....I'M GOING TO CHINA!!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE HERE FOR SUPPORT DURING THE LAST FEW DAYS. I NEVER thought this would happen.

Huzzah for the small-town kids!  Way to represent!

  13. Thank you! I needed that. I am finding there is not enough powder to cover a red nose. But, waterproof mascara was the right choice this morning! ;)

You're welcome! There's always more where that came from if and / or when you need it.  And wear that red nose with pride.  Passion for life is never a bad thing, and sometimes that passion comes back to bite you in the ass.  It's all part of living a full life, my friend.  So live on!

  14. Bless you! I am 40 actually. My oldest son is turning 21 next week. I am trying to see the bright side and hope for the best.

Hey...Congratulations to all my awesome friends that DID make it today! That is something to celebrate! :)

Blech... I applied to PhD programs for 10 years before I got in.  I started my first MA program 7 years ago when I was 30; I started my PhD program 3 years ago; I won't finish said program until I'm over 40; I lived abroad for the first time studying Arabic 2 summers ago (yep, I was 35).  There's no such thing as too old!  Never give up hope!

K, that's my pep talk.  Tuck it away and think about it sometime after the sting has worn off a bit.

  15. Thanks for the update, Reb.

Also: "There's a signpost up ahead"? Uh... what? Like, dude, if you don't know anything and have nothing substantial to say, don't be all coy about it.

I really don't understand how everyone seems to be in the dark on this - or, at least, MACACE and the ME/NA program manager are, which seems like a pretty substantial lack of organization and communication.

Ya, I certainly muttered a few words when I read the email.  And that was literally all it said.  I mean, really?

  16. Yeah Turkey! Congrats to all who received good news and thanks for breaking the drought!

For those of you monitoring Morocco, I heard back from the head of MACECE. His message: "Just hang in there... there's a signpost up ahead." I wish he had been a tad more specific, but at this point I guess we'll take what we can get.

  17. Hi everyone - long time lurker of this forum, I applied last year as well - but I thought I would give a bit of a non-update to the other two(?) Morocco applicants in the forum.

I just called Jermaine Jones about when we could be expecting to hear from Morocco (I heard from them last year on the 25th of April, and the year before that was I believe April 15th?) and Jones has basically said that he (and/or his office) are just as much in the dark as we are: he hasn't heard back from the DC or Rabat offices. He estimated maybe this or next week, but reiterated that it was complete guesswork for him as well.

I don't know what is going on with this whole process, but I hope I'm not alone in believing that Fulbright (and/or IIE) really need to get their sh*t together.

Thanks, cessiemasque.  I just emailed the head of the MACECE office in Rabat.  Keep your fingers crossed for a response...

  18. Morocco! Are you guys ETA or research applicants? I applied for ETA, hoping to study an Amazigh dialect and politics too though insha'allah :)

I'm a research applicant studying the visual representation of women in Moroccan film.  I'm also hoping to study darija and tamazight while I'm there.  I know that ALIF in Fes has a semester-long language program in both if you get the CLEA.

  19. Thanks to everyone for hanging out today and offering mutual support.  I second the feelings of anxiety and depression, trouble sleeping, etc., and I appreciate others' willingness to corroborate these feelings.

  20. Morrocco ETA finalist here...has anyone inquired about notifications for Morocco? They came in on April 19 and April 25 in the past couple of years, so there's time, but with each day I get more and more anxious to know. Hate the wait.

Hey sarah888, I'm thrilled to hear from another Morocco applicant!  Back in March, the head of MACECE told me it would be the last week of April.  I'm hoping that's next week...
