  1. Hello everyone, Let me start off by saying that I am an undergraduate sophomore majoring in International Studies. However, I am spending my sophomore year abroad studying in South Korea. I am considering transferring to Hawaii in order to pursue my studies of Korean and hopefully graduate with a Korean B.A. Being an out-of-state student, the thought of attending is quite unrealistic unless I am able to get several scholarships. I emailed my Korean professor back at my home university asking him if he would be willing to write me two letters of recommendations, given the fact that I was in his class for 2 semesters and he had written me several letters last year for different scholarships. He replied saying "I have already agreed to write recommendation letters for several Korean language students here, so you may have to ask someone else for the letters. Good luck with your transfer." The problem I have is this: I am in need of 3 letters of recommendations, and one must be from a professor in my field of study. However, as I will be changing my major to a Korean B.A., it is important that at least one of these letters is from a Korean professor. However, he is the only Korean professor that I have had, meaning that I have no one else to ask. I did have a TA in the class, who I also emailed, but I have yet to hear back from her. I would ask one of my Korean teachers here at my university in Korea, but none of them speak English, and none of them are actual professors meaning that it would not really work for them to write any letters for me. How do I go about asking him to write me a letter of recommendation, despite what he said? I feel as if he was trying to put me down lightly by saying that he was already writing letters for several other students instead of flat out saying "No, that would not be possible." so I do not want to be pushy, but at the same time this letter is vital for the scholarship, which in turn is very important as the tuition costs are unthinkable. I understand that he may have letters for other students, but he only teaches two classes with a total of 50ish students. I can't imagine he is so busy that this is that unfeasible for him. What are your thoughts? P.S. I thought about just asking other professors that were not Korean language professors, but the trouble is that I am a sophomore (who only spent two semesters at my home uni before studying abroad) so I have very few professors to ask to begin with.
  2. It does seem like it would be quite a hassle, however Boren is not saying that we are not allowed to travel at all; we must first just get their approval before going on any travel in which we plan to leave our host country. I have a two month long winter break in which I plan to go to Taiwan to visit a friend, but the remaining time will likely be spent travelling around my own host country. I'm sure you'll find lots of things you will able to do!

  4. I am also going to South Korea, but it is for the scholarship (and starts the end of August). Congrats everyone!
  5. The content in this year's budget update email for scholarships seemed nearly identical to previous years, so I would assume so, although it honestly anyone's guess. We'll found out soon enough
  6. As far as I know of, some other scholar applicants and I did not receive a budget correction email anytime from 3/11-3/15. We only received *the* budget email, which was sent out on 3/25 and included both an update to the budget and our start/end dates, but because when the spreadsheet was first created (and subsequently when many of the scholar applicants input their information) the dates at the top of the column were not there (creating confusion among us), so many scholar applicants decided that on the spreadsheet they would input that they had received both a budget and a dates email (even though in reality it was just one email that included both budget and date updates). In all honesty, this year has been kind of a mess, especially when deciding how to input data into the spreadsheet because scholarships did in fact have *the* budget email this year, where as fellowships did not, but instead received a dates email and some a budget correction email or week or so before the dates email. So yeah, I pretty much think that it's just that no one updated their information after the dates were entered into the top of the column, so the spreadsheet is somewhat misleading because now it technically is saying that scholar applicants received 2 emails when in reality it was one. No need to worry! You received the same email as us, so congrats!
  7. Nope, it was not a different email, but because *the* budget email for scholarships included both an update to the budget and our start/end dates, I decided that on the spreadsheet I would input that I had received both a budget and a dates email. Hope it doesn't confuse anyone otherwise I could change it, if need be.

    FLAS 2013-2014

I applied for FLAS to study Korean as an undergraduate student, and as far as I know, all regional/language area groups at my university have already been notified whether or not they were nominated for the award. However, like you said, it stated that it was "contingent on federal funding" so I am not really quite sure what to expect, or when we would know for sure if this funding is here to stay.
  9. Hey all, I just recieved a budget updat email at 12:32PM from Lisa Mayorga. (Note that I applied for a scholarship, so fellowship emails may be sent out at a different time.) Good luck to everyone!!
  10. Hey everyone! Thanks, Djevojka, for starting up this thread! I'm curious to find out whether or not I'll receive an email from Boren in the next few days... It would certainly make me a lot more relaxed. Anyways, for those of you interested, here are the links to the Boren spreadsheets from the past two years. 2011-2012: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AkcX_P5cr8uIdDNxT3NhZ2RkUnBCZDQ4eS15Si1haUE&authkey=CPu-4N4N&hl=en&authkey=CPu-4N4N#gid=0 2012-2013: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Asi20Z5Kk3M8dDU0Y2R1Z191S2NKQ1JEV2kwQk5OS2c#gid=0 I'm also curious to know which country you guys are applying for and whether it is a scholarship or a fellowship. I'm applying for Seoul, South Korea, scholarship. Good luck to everyone!
