  1. Ahh, I'm guessing that they have to still figure it out then
  2. I am not sure then. I would ask Leslie Main from Graduate Studies. you can find her e-mail on the carleton grad studies website. And she is super awesome in returning e-mail communication Cog-sci sounds pretty cool I'm in Law & Legal Studies
  3. Yes, but at the same time, it really would not be so hard to do. at my school the grad admin send e-mail to each dep't admin about the results and the dep't send e-mail to students. I mean it really isnt that complicated to do this for all applicants. After all, no single department has hundreds of applicants that were forwarded. As no single school has that many allotted SSHRC awards... So there must be some other logic. But that is also flawed, whatever it is, as it makes everyone more anxious!!! especially since some of us (many) already know! So, my heart goes out to all that have not yet heard.(BIG HUGS)
  4. Sorry about that:( that sucks, but we should be getting the letters tomorrow, if they were sent out on Friday. Or wednesday if they were sent out on Monday
  5. I'm at Carleton. If you applied in your second year phd you get 2 years of SSHRC funding at 20k each. so 40k total. If you applied in your third year you only get one year at 20k. If you applied in your first year on while in your MA you can get CGS which is 35k for 3 years. p.s. which department are you in?
  6. I am sorry you were wait listed . But, also congrats on having a good entrance package , it makes a big difference, and if you end up getting it (a SSHRC) this year or even next, hopefully you'll be able to keep your original package.
  7. i'm in Ottawa, and no letter for me either... Which school are you in?
  8. By the way, not to highjack the topic but for all of us, here is some food for thought. What is your research worth? http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2013/04/25/pol-harper-trinidad.html?cmp=googleeditorspick
  9. I think this is a brilliant point! the reference letters carry a large wight, and not all faculty are amazing at writing those. It really is more of a skill as you have to hit a number of key points in those letters. So for everyone applying next time around, you really want to be very strategic in deciding who will write your references. It also really helps if those people were well regarded in their field and surrounding sub areas. Also to the point that AmandaG made, i completely agree with that as well. I also spend weeks and weeks and weeks. In total i had nine full drafts before the final, and had sent out many of my drafts to five different faculty members often multiple times, with my two referees seeing every single draft!. So i think you really want to get the faculty involved and in a way peer-review yourself. Get a variety of faculty members even ones that have nothing to do with your area as this mimics the conditions of the actual committee makeup. It was a lot of work, if i had to put and hour number to mine i'd say i put in perhaps somewhere around 100 hours.
  10. I know exactly what you mean! The only thing I can offer is not to think of it as a validation or not. It is not like any of the people getting rejections are less capable researchers! Or less important research projects! A good friend of mine got a rejection yesterday, and his project is fascinating. And as a researcher he is brilliant. I blame the obscurity of the selection process for giving the impression of validation. I think we have all seen it go to people's heads once they get it, and that is both sad and dangerous. So I say, if you get it be super duper happy that your immediate financial well-being is no longer in jeopardy. And that's it! At least this is how I am looking at it.
  11. Best of luck Nerd_For_Life. Sending you super duper awesome positive vibes!!!
  12. oops, sorry First year phd at time of application, award given for second year on..
  13. Was notified by my dept. that i got CGS - pestered my grad admin for days, not sure how they have not yet murdered me in my sleep . Here are my stats, minus the actual score (will post that when letters arrive) Second year phd Carleton U. 10.7 GPA (high A-) 2 peer reviewed publications (one in grad journal one in regular but co-authored) 1 book review in peer-review journal 1 non-peer-review but still academic (co-authored) 1 domestic research conference. ranked high in dept. (1 or 2 - not sure) only internal funding (no external scholarships - ever - at time of application) applied in 5th category (committee 5 - econ, poll-sci, law, IR, etc) Good luck everyone, sending all positive vibes!

  17. status update: poop-depository-box void of any meaningful content (location: Ottawa) You know i so close, they could just walk the damn letters to my house!!! (Why dont they?) Hell, i'll volunteer to pick them up and drive them around.....
  18. Thanks, for the update. I think i saw a donkey go by not that long ago! i'm on my way to check the poop-deposiroty-box
  19. SSHRC has been prolifically tweeting about everything but the one thing that really matters.... I think they are taunting us!!! Well, ok, maybe, this was my inner narcissist talking...
  20. A big part of being accepted in a program has to do with the potential fit between your proposed research and how much faculty support there could be for you. So, not being accepted at one institution or another is not necessarily a reflection of your quality as a scholar. Dont take it personally, keep your chin up and keep trying! Best of luck mate, and dont loose courage!
