  1. I actually guessed part of the ending (I was one of the rumor mongers ) but I just didn't like the way it was told. It would have been fitting 5 seasons ago, but it feels like it deserved more time because it took 9 seasons to get there.
  2. Well, to be fair, this season would have been good, if they didn't make it so slow at the wrong times, and so quick at the wrong times.. D:
  3. "Dude, I didn't get it." "Dude, I got it." "Dude, HIMYM is over."
  4. Meh, I say, go find a good link to HIMYM series finale and watch it.
  5. >Everyone is just sitting back hitting refresh. Uh, we're a bit more refined than that. We use a script to refresh automatically, searching for keywords like "results" "are" "up" or something.
  6. I wonder how much temptation there is in doing a maintenance then an "APRIL FOOL'S" kind of page. D:
  7. I'm more optimistic about the series finale for HIMYM than the NSF GRFP.

I just want to know.. I mean, my advisor is well-funded enough that I don't have to worry (unless some random act of craziness happens, which is always possible), but it would have been so awesome to get this for the DoE networking..

I guess everyone is watching this thread because it's April 15th, eh? We're officially not in "early April" now . . .

Well, I think my advice for this is the same as what a professor told me when I asked something similar.. "Why don't you wait and see if you get it before you ask questions like that?" EDIT: Realized how mean that sounds. I mean that, you don't want to ask questions like that because it raises your hope up to a certain level because you've thought about what would happen if you have it, you know? It's like thinking about what that $5000 allowance would get you in terms of a workstation computer. It will raise an incredible amount of hope that may be too hurtful to recover from easily.

Honestly, the biggest thing from this fellowship is the ability to network with other computational guys and with the DoE labs.. I'd love to be able to work there afterwards, but my advisor is better connected with non-DoE national labs.
  12. Do you really need a good fit for a place you intend to leave after a year or two..? I mean, if your goal is to go into a PhD program, there's less of a need to feel at home at your Master's than at the PhD institution. Of course, if you have a friend pick for you, and you feel either relieved or are looking for excuses to invalidate it, then you already have a choice made in your mind.
  13. Did you realistically calculate your chances of attending a top 10 program for your PhD? I mean, assuming you do well in your MA, assuming that funding is as shitty as it is now, assuming that there won't be a lot of high calibre candidates in your field when you apply, what are your chances of getting into a top 10 PhD program? I think it's crazy when people refuse funding for a possible "better" situation so that's my opinion.

    Does that mean April 15th?

So, once it gets past April 10, it's no longer early April, right? I mean, if you split something in early, that would mean that you have early, late, and the middle crap in between.. In addition, I don't think that it's fair to put early, late, and the middle as equal sections.. Really, early April should have been before April 5. Damn it.

Nope. But based on past successful applicant statistics, my chance of getting this is essentially zero.
  17. It could be based on the bureaucratic crap from state/national laws.. I mean, our stipends seem to be limited to some set amount for UCs, but apparently, our actual income depends on additional fellowships that they add on to our stipends that makes it more attractive (but doesn't violate their salary ##'s?).
  18. My funding was only guaranteed for 2 years, but you should also get a sense of funding from visiting day, right? I was told that the admissions committee at my school went and asked professors if they had funding available for students before they decided on acceptances so I know that my advisor should at least have the funding for me (unless I really suck and they want to kick me out). I'm trying to remember what my other offer was like, but I think it was only a 3 year guarantee as well, definitely not all 6 years.
  19. One reviewer seemed really impressed with my application, one seemed to like it good but not great, and the last one gave actual good advice in that, I think I can see why my application wasn't strong enough. Basically, the last guy liked my application and the way everything was written, but I think my lack of publications (which I explained) was equivalent to a lack of evidence of independent ability, and that my lack of tangible outreach was also a lack of evidence in outreach. So, while I'm grateful to have the first reviewer's comments to make me feel slightly better, I think the last guy's comments have shown me what I'm really missing so I know what to focus on for this time period until the next application season.
  20. Well, to make the rest of you feel better, didn't get it. VG/E G/G G/G I think the main thing was my lack of publications... The first guy doesn't seem to mind, the middle guy doesn't seem to mind that either but.. doesn't have any advice either way, basically tells me to continue my efforts, and the last guy didn't think my application provides evidence of my ability to independently solve problems or communicate my research. :/ Could be worse; hopefully, I will have a better application next year because of the research I'm doing this year! Congratulations to the new fellows/HM'ers!
  21. Wrong, I'm already depressed, so I won't be depressed as all hell. I'll just be depressed at a normal level as I have been for the last week.. I just hope that my reviews aren't things that are so bad that I can't change within a year..
  22. I thought the odds were similar for all fields since they hand them out based on the number of applicants per field, or something like that, right? Nope. Good luck! Did anyone apply for the DOE CSGF? When does that come out?
  23. I'm just going to watch Arrested Development until 1:30AM because my development is arrested right now anyway. "I've made a huge mistake."
  24. Well, the NSF is conducting a research on what happens when they pretend to release results. It's a follow up to the research on what happens to intelligent kids who don't have the money to go to college.
  25. Question, has it always said " 2013 Offered Award List * The list of Awardees and Honorable Mention recipients for the year you have selected is not yet available." when clicking the awards list?
