  1. Those numbers aren't as bad as I thought they'd be.
  2. Hello all, As I enter a MA program this fall, I have begun to wonder about how difficult it is to get a tenure track job as a professor in history. I know the consensus is that the job market is pretty abysmal. However, will the job market stay as awful as it currently is? Does "abysmal" mean the chances of finding a tenure track job is about as likely as winning the lottery? Is it likely to improve? Will tenure track jobs continue to be replaced by part time adjuncts? I would like to hear up to date thoughts from those in the field and those who probably know a great deal more about the situation than I do.
  3. I'm just curious, are most PhD applicants published? Or are most not published? I'm sure it looks good on a application regardless.
  4. I'm completing my bachelors this spring, and applied to eight schools for my PhD/MA. I have heard back from seven so far, and have been accepted into three for my MA. One school I've been accepted to wants a decision by April 15th, which isn't too far away. Coming from a small liberal arts college which is unknown in the academic community, I'm looking to jump up to a solid MA school and then use that to get into the best PhD program I can in a couple of years. I have been accepted to University of Vermont SUNY Albany Temple University My question is which school would look the best when applying to PhD programs in the future? I know there are many other factors involved, such as how you fit into the program, letters of recommendation, costs of the program, TA, and so on. Right now I feel as though I fit equally well into Vermont and Temple, but not so much into Albany(I'm only considering it since I'm a NY resident and it'd be a lot cheaper) So given this information, do you think any of the schools I have been accepted into have a significantly better academic reputation than the rest? I'm new to this and any outside knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
  5. I applied to eight different PhD and Masters programs, of which I have heard back from four. I was accepted into only one. I am currently waiting on the remaining four, and am required to make my decision for the school I was accepted into by April 15th. Obviously were I accepted into any more programs I would need a little bit of time to decide where to go, for financial reasons and various other reasons. Do you think it would be rude at this point to contact these programs and ask if I could possibly know in the next week or two if I am accepted? Or should I just wait it out?
  6. Has anyone heard anything regarding Boston College?
  7. Anyone know when we'll hear back from the Masters applicants at McGill?

    I'm waiting as well.
  9. Is it considered rude to email a department and ask roughly when I will hear back from them? I'm somewhat curious, and have considered emailing someone to ask, but I don't want to come across as being rude or impatient, I'm just curious. Is it rude or somewhat typical?
  10. I applied to Boston College and I see there were two replies today, I wonder why I haven't gotten anything yet....
  11. Does anyone have any updates on McGill? I saw a post from last week that said 1 to 2 weeks, is it looking like they might decide this upcoming week?
  12. I guess everything will be delayed by yet another snowstorm hitting the northeast.
  13. It looks like Brown started sending out rejections.
  14. Does anyone know who was accepted at SUNY Albany and how they found out?
  15. I'm getting anxious, I applied to eight school and haven't heard back from any yet. I'm hoping this is the week I get at least one response!

    Publication?

Recently I wrote an article for a local Irish-American organizational newsletter. The newsletter is circulated throughout for its members. Each month, they have an article that involves Irish-American history, and last month I wrote a 2 1/2 page article for them. Does this count as a publication? It's not a scholarly journal or anything of that sort, so I'm just not sure what to consider it.
  17. From what I've heard, it seems like schools get back to you starting at the beginning of February up until mid March. Is that about accurate?
  18. Hi all, I have applied to a number of schools for the Fall of 2014 semester. I applied to some PhD programs as well as some Masters program. Theoretically, would it be possible as a history major to work and go to school full time? I've talked a few people, a friend of mine told me it would be too much and my grades would suffer while others have said it is possible, just difficult. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks!
  19. It costs 25 dollars to send my GRE score to each school using the ETS website. Is this the only way to send them?
  20. I just took the GRE for the second time, and had a slight improvement, with my verbal at 159 and quantitative at 145. I am still waiting on the writing score(I got a 4.5 last time, hoping for a 5). I'm applying to many schools as is, and initially I hadn't really considered applying to Yale or Harvard feeling they were out of reach. My focus would be in Early American History. Among other things, my overall GPA is just under a 3.5(3.48) and my GPA in history is 3.83. Among other things, I have worked on a few research projects with my professors, interned in records management and am currently the President of the History Honors society. I am applying to a lot of schools and the applications do get expensive, so to put it bluntly, based off what I have here, would I have a chance at any of these schools or should I pass by applying there? And also, does anyone know if there is such a thing as a common application for grad schools?
  21. Do you think I'd have a legitimate chance with those kind of GRE scores?
  22. They're over 300(barely), but I basically bombed the math. I'm terrible at math, but scored solidly on the verbal and the writing. I am going to take it one last time though.
  23. Ah yes sorry, my GRE scores are going to be the weakest part of my application and I suspect they may doom me for these schools.
  24. When I say "reach" it means I think I have a chance of getting in, but mostly likely will not.
  25. I did look into Yale, but that along with NYU and William and Mary would qualify as a "reach" school for me. So I'm a little wary about applying to too many more reach schools . McGill does appear to have a great staff, as I have met a few already, and a great program. And I agree that Montreal is great. Along with that, it's about half the price of some of these other schools on my list. So even if I have to get my MA there first then move on to PHD it would, financially, make the most sense. I have heard similar things about SUNY schools, I had a friend who hated the SUNY Albany MA program, but I'm going to apply there as one of my more "safe" schools.
