  1. Hang on, Cornell. Here's hoping!
  2. Congratulations!!! How exciting!
  3. I don't know why I torture myself by checking the results page.... now I'm getting nervous.
  4. That is my understanding also. I think that going to a top tier college is helpful insofar as it means your recommenders will be better known. So, I think there's a correlative relationship (better known professors are more likely to be at the top tier schools), but obviously that isn't always the case. And I certainly don't think going to a lesser known school will hurt you.... the issue is how much influence your professors will have. Good luck!!
  5. Amanda, I am thinking this might be a particularly good plan for you and me since we are both interested in Britain. I understand that if possible, one should try to avoid owning up to being a British historian when on the job market because they are, alas, so common. Maybe if we write dissertations comparing the British Isles and Spain we can spin ourselves as also being Continentalists, and get jobs. Yay.
  6. Italian might not be that universally great but I think Spanish is worse... what a disappointment (for Europe). I've taken Spanish since eighth grade! I keep thinking back to eighth grade when I had the choice - French, Spanish, or Latin, and then in ninth grade we also had German. And in practical terms Spanish really was a good choice. But, oh, had I only chosen ANY other language! I have had a couple of years in French now in college, so my language prep is decent I think, but I wish I had German or Latin instead of Spanish. But I'm determined to use my Spanish now. Oh yes. Spain will work its way into my dissertation somehow.
  7. Hmm... I don't know, but I would suggest that your husband contact the faculty he is interested in working with. I think they're usually aware, and they would probably be happy to give him an idea. Best of luck to him!
  8. Ew, that stinks that Harvard hasn't sent them all out. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear from them. totallyfreakingout, congrats on UCLA! That's very good news!
  9. Eek, I'm semi-afraid to call. If they have made decisions, why haven't they let people know? You know, I sometimes think these admissions people must be quite sadistic.... (especially when they let SOME people know but wait weeks to tell everyone else..)
  10. Hi! I've been lurking since I discovered this site last week. I thought I would finally say hello. I'm applying for European history.
