  1. You're not too old for anything! Meh that.
  2. Really, that's interesting. How big is your cohort, maybe that has something to do with it.
  3. I'm not sure what your question is. The Fulbright doesn't cover a masters degree. It funds different things like Independent research (while engaging in cultural exchange) or Language exchange (while engaging in cultural exchange). You would do your masters before or after the program, not during. Additionally, apply through your old school. You'll have a wealth of resources you wouldn't have otherwise... and it wouldn't make sense for them to not allow you to (unless they have an overwhelming number of applicants) as it looks good for any school to send someone into the Fulbright program (I graduated in May 2011, I applied (through my school) after August of 2012.
  4. I'm glad to hear people are still getting their alternative status changed and really hope the Brazil people are learning abut their status. Brazil is absolutely somewhere I'd love to go.
  5. I had to decline an award. I hope that's some if the funding that's opened up.
  6. Anxious, nervous, scared... anyone fail their medical clearance. I'm distressed because I had a pretty rough time and major surgery and my Dr decided I'm depressed, gave me pills (that I never took) and blah. I was down but I got through it with exercise and changing my behaviors at the time. :/
  7. Still around sending you guys lots of energy. Anyone know if there is a China Fulbright Facebook group?
  8. It says preference. I think the Chinese listing has something similar. If I had followed it I wouldn't have gotten the grant. If you had stopped from reading a clause like that all the material you put together and being here wouldn't have happened. :/ 40 is the new 25
  9. Is this area specific? I'm 36, I graduated May 2011. I had read somewhere about there being a preference for younger applicants due to... well I'm still unsure why but it was something that crossed my mind. Also if an issue of age wouldn't that go against making you an alternative instead of an outright dismissal?
  10. Checking in. Hope all the mothers had a great mothers day. I wish there was something I could say but waiting has a life of it's own. Stay positive... as long as there is life there is possibility.
  11. References are of the highest level of importance. It's so important to have people who will be able to speak strongly about you. I have won a Goldwater, NSF GRFP, and a Fulbright award and I'm always told my references are of the highest quality. My undergraduate PI, a PI I worked with for summer research and a professor who taught a behavioral neuroscience class in undergrad who got to see me as a student abs also in a research setting (a PI of a neighboring class). I've never seen any of my recommendations.
  12. What scares me is that I was a Teach For America member and moved away after undergrad and it was miserable. Miserable. And a really failed experience on my part. The fear is that this could be similar to that experience but amplified as I'll be in China. Houston may be different from NYC but it's not China. That and my great grandmother is my only real familial network, 91, and leaving her alone (again) is worrisome. Oh and I guess because there are so many unknown variables... though life wouldn't be an adventure of we knew where each step will take us.
  13. After the initial feelings of shock and awe, did anyone get into a place of fear? I had such awkward moments of wondering if this is for me, then thought of how much we've all scratched and clawed to get to even where we are. Yesterday was the last day of foolishness. I'm letting everyone know I'm accepting and it's now full steam ahead.
  14. Is there any way to get around that? How does one really push the non smoking thing? Do they have electronic cigarettes in China? Would that be the more polite way of saving face?
  15. Sorry to freak you out. Eh, I hassled with the system today and things are fine.
