  1. HIGH FIVE. Um, sort of. We'll be in it together, at least ;)

I'll be right there with you. Just got my last rejection.

There's a 99% chance I'll be joining you guys next year as well (unless I luck out a 1 in a 100 scholarship at Cambridge). As depressing as it is, it gives me a real boost to see all of the people this year who got great acceptances on their 2nd/3rd cycles.

Sorry to hear that things didn't really work out for you guys either! *sort-of-high-five cupofnimbus* If anything though, there will be at least some familiar faces next year then! Although to be honest, as of this moment, I'm not entirely sure whether I should go for round two in the 2014-2015 cycle (which if we think about it, will start in about half a year. Scary thought!), or if it would be beneficial to take an extra year, really think about what I want to do research interest-wise, and (hopefully) improve the strength of my application in the meantime...

Sleeping on it for a couple days might help in terms of getting perspective. And obviously I don't have anything explicit to contribute to the Profiles/SOPs thread, considering that this cycle didn't pan out for me, but maybe I'll note a couple of things I've learned along the way, mistakes made, that sort of thing.

Cambridge would be fantastic, NYCBluenose! Who knows, maybe you will get that scholarship! Is it a Master's or a PhD/DPhil?

  2. Congratulations to all the Harvard and UPenn (and any other) admits!!

I'm secretly afraid people won't be so nice next year! I'm sure this is totally unfounded, though. Folks are nice here!

(I agree about "unmasking", so to speak. Be nice if bumming around here could count as professional development/networking!)

LOL I have the same (hopefully unfounded) fears, especially since it looks like I'll be coming back for another cycle too...

  3. Anyone claiming/can verify the Masters admit to Columbia??

Since their deadline is April 2nd and the website FAQ states:

    A. Admission notices:

Admission to the M.A. program is made on a rolling basis. Beginning as early as mid- to late- May, students who have been admitted to the program will be notified of their acceptance. The department continues to admit students until the desired class size is attained.

    Decline notices:

Given the application deadline of April 2 (when most applications are submitted) and the rolling nature of the M.A. admissions process, notifications to students who are declined admission usually are not sent until the early summer. Although the department recognizes that this is less than ideal for most candidates who may be weighing other options, the department cannot respond to applicant inquiries until the admission process is complete.

I'd figured there was at least two months until it'd be time to start stressing about responses

    Edit: fixed a typo

  4. I've spoken with some top IR faculty at length about MIT. Based on those conversations, my sense is that (from an IR perspective -- can't speak for other subfields):

    (1) Internat'l security-wise, Stanford, Columbia, MIT and Princeton have the best programs. Princeton's seems to be improving due to junior faculty hiring while Columbia's is slowing down a bit due to key faculty hitting retirement

    (2) Stanford's is the most quantitive, followed by Princeton then Columbia and then MIT.

    (3) MIT is the most policy-relevant. One prof mentioned that in terms of career placement, Stanford is 75% academia-focused, 25% policy oriented; MIT is  the exact opposite. The advice I've been given by pretty much everyone in the field is, if you want to go into academia, go to Stanford/Princeton. If you want to go into policy, go to MIT/Columbia.

    (4) MIT has hired a few key methodologists in the past year or two, but I'm not sure this is reflected yet in its reputation/rankings

    Hope that helps

This is very useful information, especially displayed like this. Thanks for sharing!

There have only been 8 MIT admits reported thus far, so fingers crossed that they've got a couple more to contact. (Although by the looks of it, only 8 admits were reported on GC last year too...) Also curious about whether any IR acceptances have gone out yet.

Congrats to everyone who's heard good news today and yesterday!

  5. I thought M was for Michigan! When I didn't freak about not hearing from Columbia yet, I realized I probably didn't wanna go there as badly as expected. If, by some miracle, I do get accepted (did any IR people hear back yet?), it'll be a discussion, cause I'd love living in NYC, but...

Oh really? Maybe it is Michigan then, hmm...

Same, not panicking about Columbia as much as I'd expected. But then again, research interest-wise, it wasn't a great fit, so maybe I've just better prepared myself internally to deal with the disappointment there.

Yeah, I'm IR and I heard from Columbia.

That must be so vindicating to finally get it! Congratulations!!

  6. I think it is California, for Berkeley.

Should be Cal-tech though. That program is boss.

I still can't figure out which University the C in CHYMPS stands for.

Cornell? I don't really know lol. Btw, are you ready for tonight??!!??!

I'd always been under the impression that the C was for Columbia...

HYP is Harvard Yale Princeton, obviously, and then Columbia was added since it's also in the upper half of the Ivies, rankings-wise, and then M for MIT and S for Stanford, because strong programs and whatnot.

Outside of California and internationally, most people refer to UC-Berkeley as simply Berkeley, and not Cal, actually.

That aside, congrats to all the Columbia admits! Way to go guys! :)

(sobbing a little on the inside over here about not receiving notification, but mostly feeling okay about it)

  7. Can Wednesday still be counted as early this week, given the national holiday and storm?

If we're going by the logic that Thursday + Friday are considered "late in the week" and foregoing mid-week entirely, then Wednesday would still count as "early this week." In any case, hopefully we get closure one way or the other tomorrow!

  8. The previous years' threads in this vein have been super helpful, and since we seem to have hit a bit of a lull in terms of responses and people are ruminating on what could have been done differently, what better time to compile a thread of advice, lessons learned, and things of that sort?

First, to credit all the threads that have come before:

It's indeed a bit early, but the 2012 thread was started on February 13, and RWBG raised a good point about:

Nonetheless, given that some peoples' cycles are ending around now, I wanted to get this thread up and running before people started leaving.

And the template from previous years:

  9. I would suggest you receive the funds and automatically transfer it into a fixed deposit interest bearing account that you can only drawdown from year 3.  This should be easy to arrange with a local bank via standing orders, etc.  Better to have the funds under your control than be subject to a state institution. Remember it's California!  Please pardon my paranoia.

Is the state of California sketch? (I'm genuinely curious now!)

  10. I think you are correct. I could have sworn I read that decisions would be made by early Feb, but I called this AM and they said "toward the end of February." After reading your post, it seems that I wasn't just hallucinating earlier, and that they did in fact decide to delay decisions this year.

I remember a couple weeks ago, someone mentioned that the status page once you log into your application had changed - and indeed it had, when I checked. But now it's back to what it used to look like right after the applications were submitted. Strange.

  11. I'm applying to grad school, not Wall Street.  If I had $20, I'd buy new socks and the slightly more expensive kind of macaroni and cheese.

    I hear Annie's is pretty good ;)

I think Columbia is likely (my guess is Thurs/Fri). Several days ago someone from Stanford mentioned that the committee was meeting again this Thursday, so perhaps Friday, though early next week is also possible. MIT should definitely be any day now.

Probably postal service again this year, y'all reckon?

I know a couple days/pages back, someone got into touch with UCLA and the response was that it was still a work in progress, but there has literally been no movement whatsoever from them. Are they basically waiting on an internal waitlist then, before notifying rejections officially? Oh whatever, just going to presume a rejection at this point then. :(
