  1. anyone taken it yet? what was it like? or what was the previous year like?
  2. Hi, I have an interview coming up for the Jschool at Berkeley. There is a written test/online evaluation that goes along with the personal interview. Does anyone have any insight on it? What is it like etc? I am pretty nervous. Thanks!
  3. Any update on the test? I have to take it as well.
  4. Hi I wrote this in test mode; using simple text edit system and outlined as well. I timed myself in 30 minutes just as the test. A recent study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that employees with paid sick leave are 28 percent less likely to be involved in a work-related accident than employees who do not receive payment for sick leave. Researchers hypothesize that employees with unpaid sick leave feel pressured to work during time of illness for fear of lack of pay. On-the-job accidents are then spurred by impaired judgment or motor skills due to illness or illness-related medications. The highest-risk occupations, such as construction, showed the highest discrepancy between paid and unpaid leave. Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to determine whether the researchers’ hypothesis is reasonable. Be sure to explain what effects the answers to these questions would have on the validity of the hypothesis. The argument above proves to leave about many other factors that the researches did not take into consideration for their hypothesis. As a whole, there are many questions that arise after closely examining the case study. First, the CDC states an attractive and convincing percentage of people who receive paid sick leave. But they did not state a number of people they surveyed. How many exact workers did not receive paid sick leave versus how many exact workers received paid sick leave? The number of people surveyed against a whole would make the study more compelling. Overall it is not detailed enough. There isn't a specific region or industry to make the study complete. If there was a tangible number where the facts could be compared it would make this study much more valid. Second, the researchers include that employees took sick leave but it did not further include other factors. Did the employees surveyed really take a sick leave or did they not come in for other reasons? There could have been many other factors that have occurred in which the an employee could not have come in. A sick leave can be taken on a personal interpretation. Those are also factors that should have been measured during the study. Third, the study discussed on-the-job accidents that may have been attributed to illnesses or related medications. The study also points out high risk occupations such as construction as part of the evaluation. But it fails to mention anywhere being injured on the actual job site due to the high-risk occupation. What percentage of workers are surveyed who are hurt on the job versus the hurt on the job due to illness? In conclusion, the study seems very interesting and attractive but it is lacking sufficiency to complete a valid hypothesis. It cannot be a proven study unless the weaknesses above are addressed and taken out.
  5. did you turn your application in before december 1st deadline?
  6. has anyone started? have you had trouble with it? I am having trouble sounding too sad. I would be willing to swap with anyone!
  7. I am in stress/panic mode right now about what would be the best to send in. I am applying to Berkeley definitely and CUNY. My most recent work was for an international arts and culture magazine where I have several full length Q&A's with artists, galleries, etc. The pieces somewhat touch on cultural and international relations. I do have one piece that I definitely want to send in that showcases an artist but also touches on diaspora and racism. My other piece will be a multimedia digital short. A very short piece on Korean Adoptees. Probably only 7 mins at most. It will be a narrative story but with concrete researched facts and numbers. The last sample has to be a writing piece. I am having trouble deciding what would be the best to send in.... Is it acceptable to submit another Q&A from that magazine (mentioned above) or is it repetitive? Or should I write a completely different piece and publish it on a magazine blog? I don't have very much time left...I just don't have any investigative reporting style pieces. They are all mostly published pieces focusing on arts and culture.
  8. target schools: CUNY, USC, Berkeley, NYU
  9. Hi All! I am new to this forum and am getting ready to take the GRE and prepare myself for the application process in fall. I am a little rusty since I graduated undergrad 6 years ago. I would like to know if with my experience I am a good candidate for Jschool or if I should beef up my experience? GPA: 3.0 Graduated in 2007 Work Experience: Worked for a global ad agency for 2 years as a media planner. Taught English overseas for 2.5 years Writing/Journalism Experience: Interned for an alternative weekly publication in undergrad, wrote music and album reviews for a popular music magazine/website. Currently: writing full length interviews in an International Lifestyle/Art magazine, helping produce a documentary in Korea, editing and producing a podcast based out of Korea, working on my own personal documentary, enrolled in a digital storytelling course. Recommendations: One from a former boss at my ad agency, one from an old editor I worked with in university. Please any advice is welcomed. Thank you.
