Another speechie who made the switch to the dark side! ;-)
When not geeking out to Audiology, I enjoy exploring my fair state, sipping on a cold pint, and cooking meals for my family and friends. -

ARGGGG! I want to see True Detective, but I don't have HBO. Is there any way to see that on demand for free? or online? I am currently going crazy for Game of Thrones, Parks and Rec, and Trailblazers games, when they are on. Good luck, all! -
Same status on mine...I am glad to hear I'm not the only one! Phew! Best of luck, guys!

Crazy Grad School Dreams/Nightmares
lululuna replied to AudCSL's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I must share! So, my choice school is Pitt. I have a friend who goes to school there (undergrad) now. I had a dream I went to visit to scope out the campus, meet people, etc. One day, he asks, "Have you seen my view?" I reply that I haven't, so he proceeds to open this curtain to a giant window... All I can see is this beautiful picturesque skyline with the famous cathedral of learning in the middle...except it is a giant amazing amusement park! So, we then proceed to blow off all of the original, somewhat academic plans in favor of riding rollercoasters, going on giant waterslides, and driving bumper cars. I was not very happy when my cat woke me from that dream. It made everything feel okay! -
Aha! Good to know! Yeah, I recall that being in the email as well, but didn't think too much of it. I mean, if they offered admission they can't retract it, RIGHT?!? *shudders at the thought* Also, I think it's kind of a joke that one school mentioned that although we have until April 15th to make the decision (as they do the offer), word of funding may not come until AFTER that. How in the hell are we supposed to make decisions when there is so much at stake? For all of the schools I applied, I will potentially be moving cross country. That money makes or breaks a decision.

This is very smart! Out-of-state tuition is such a pain. Best of luck to you!

Hey there sayjo! What exactly do you mean by "official"? I received an email saying this in the first line: Congratulations, the Admissions Committee has recommended that you be accepted into our Masters of Speech-Language Pathology program for the 2014-2015 academic year. This was followed up about a week later with an invitation to the open house. However, I have not received any word about funding. Is this what you received?

AHHH This is driving me insane! I am ON my TUPortal and it doesn't say anything about admission! The website layout is TERRIBLE.

@ Sayjo- thanks for the insight! I LOVELOVE LOVE med/neuro speech path. I have a lot of experience in research about Neurogenic language disorders. I guess you can say I love the language part of speech-language pathology! @ aucinema- I like the flexibility of speech path, and that's one thing keeping me drawn to it. I haven't completely written it off, I am just having serious thoughts about switching. I call it, "my mid-life crisis"...couldn't be more true! I would like to speak with more folks in audiology about job availability. According to BLS and other similar websites, it will be a flourishing profession once the baby boomers age (much like speech path)- but I still feel wary about those statistics. One thing that is really important to me is family- and all of mine is here in Oregon. I want the flexibility- in either profession- to be able to return home post-grad/post-cfy. I feel like I am asking for a lot but at the same time, funneling so much time and energy toward it, that it feels like thats what should happen after we graduate. I don't know. I need a bottle of wine and chocolate STAT! haha Thanks for sharing, everyone!

@NCAR: You are not alone!! I have actually been experiencing minor health issues because of the stress (also considering my potential switch). It will all come to light soon! Isn't it true that we should start hearing back from most schools beginning next week? Or was this in one of my panic dreams?!? -
Thank you, aucinema. That was a very insightful position that I hadn't thought of. I mean, I love technology but I was most interested in switching because of the scientific nature of the work- but it sounds like perhaps that just turns into a scientific background once becoming a practitioner. I don't know- I am still on the edge. I love aspects of both sides- but I also do not the prospect of working with speech sound disorders, etc., which seem to be so prevalent in any SLP job. I am also hoping to work in a hospital setting, but know that these jobs are few and far between post-graduation. Perhaps you have any thoughts on this? Either way, there seems to be a lot of sitting in front of a computer screen and paperwork. If you don't mind me asking- did you do a transfer within your graduate school, or did you take some time off and apply again? Thank you again- your input is really helpful =) L.

@deafaudi: Isn't Pacific about the same price as other programs? ~30k/year for three years instead of four?

Sorry to hear about your rejection, Lorenzojojo! Keep your chin up. Here is a fact that helps me with my rejection(s- there will be more): There are simply not enough spaces to accommodate all the very qualified applicants. As mentioned 145,654,845 times- your stats are stellar. Keep up the good work! Also, @Impulsive: Cry + wine = best thing I've ever read on this forum. So, so true.
