  1. Hi All, Just to let you know, I got my rejects from JHU Epi and UNC HBE. Still waiting on UBC Vancouver--anyone heard from them yet? Good luck..
  2. [good luck to all of us going through the upcoming round of admission reviews!
  3. Being a bit of a dreamer...My plan is to quit my job in June, hop on a plane to some destination in Africa, volunteer for 4 months with a random organization and look foward to buying school supplies in the fall
  4. Hi Public Health People, I'm applying for Phds in Epi, Health Behavior and Health Services depending on the program and who I connected with during visits or calls. I did the whole applications thing last year too and it was mid Feb until mid April that I heard back from all my schools. SO, sit tight (siiigh). Do you think the field of Public Health is going to be impacted by the economy (as in will there be more people returning to school that have tons of experience etc?)
  5. Thanks. I have been looking at the root words and it seems everytime I go to apply it, It happens to be the "exception"-Go figure! There is a book that was recommended to me called Word Power Made Easy that seems to be pretty good and I have been using online flash cards and Kaplans Vocab in a box. Thanks for the tip
  6. Thanks for the words of encouragement rinneron...i'll bite the bullet and see how far I can get!
  7. Hi All, I decided to retake the GRE in order to try to get above my 430 score into a more respectable score. I am content with my Q score at 720 and am worried that is going to fall. I took it Dec 07 and am scheduled to take it again Jan 15, 08. I keep reading things that since the V section is based on Vocab, its really hard to improve your score in this section. Has Anyone raised their verbal significantly and if so how? Thanks and Happy New Year!
  8. Hello Everyone! It's application time again and already I am dreading the long process and waiting. Thought it would be nice to know who's out there applying for PhD's for Fall 09 to share the misery with and of course support each other. I'm in International/Global health and am re-applying with hopes of a better school for this year. I've decided to try my luck at the GRE again  in hopes to raise my verbal score. Good Luck to everyone!
  9. Hi Everyone-- I need some advice. I've been rejected at all the schools I applied to except one which is my bottom choice that I applied to on a whim. That said, they are not promising funding and do not have skilled faculty in my area of concentration. SO, i have 2 questions.... 1) Does anyone know someone who has transferred from a PhD program in public health to another and if so, was it hard and were they transfering to a better school or an equal school ranking-wise? Is it normally frowned upon to do this? 2) Do you think that going anywhere is better than nowhere...I know it depends on my career goals yah-dah-yah-dah but a PhD is my career goal. I am in contact with the admission commitees to try to see what happened. I am just having a hard time deciding if waiting another year to **Maybe** get in somewhere I want to be is worth it or not. Any ideas or words of wisdom are much appreciated:)
  10. Thanks for the tip. I got my rejection letter today in the mail from UW and an interview request at BU. Since I am in Seattle, UW was my first choice but I'll see what happens to BU
  11. Has Anyone heard from UW seattle PHD Health Services?? or BU, UIC, USC? waiting waiting waiting waiting
  12. Just received an email that decisions from Harvard for Doctor of Public Health degree program in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health are out. I didnt get in Ok, now there are only a few more schools left to hear from sigh
  13. I guess Tom Petty said it best with "The waiting is hte hardest part"--thanks for the reminder
  14. I haven't heard anything from Harvard yet either but I am applying to Socio-medical sciences. I don't have any other offers so far, so I guess I am not in a rush to find out. I have been working closely with a prof and UW Seattle (by far my first choice) for about a year and was hoping he would be advocating for my admission. I had a "hallway" meeting with him today and asked him what else I could do to strengthen my apps....he didnt seem to be that interested in the conversation. I'm a little bummed that I have been researching with him for a year and teaching a class, taking a class etc. while working full time in another town and he hasnt been pushing my apps. Has anyone else heard from UW health Services PhD?
  15. Yeah! I am so glad I can worry and comiserate with my future colleagues and maybe classmates. So, when did you hear from Univ WA Epi? Keep your chin up all! and you don't have to masquerade as a history major, you have found your home
  16. I had a phone interview, but it was one of these that caught me off guard...8:00am, pre coffee, and I had no idea they were calling :? I think it went ok, although i wasnt my usual chatty self
  17. Hi, For those of you wondering about U Minn, I got my denial letter--let's see--it was the first one so I think early last week or the week before Hope this helps, I am going under the assumption (based on nothing but making me feel hopeful) that denials come earlier and acceptances later (or at least you are waitlised). But, I know every school has their own process... Good luck all :!:
  18. Hi, So your friend for UW health services was at the PhD Level? Whoo man, That is my first choice (nail bite, nail bite)
  19. Hi, Thanks for the reply. I am looking at strenghtening primary health services for developing countries (i.e. making programs stronger to increase access for marginalized populations) but essential medicines in developing countries is a pet project of mine with my current job. I work helping blood cancer patients find medicine and resources in LCD/Lower-Income Countries. Right now, I am working at the global level specializing in Asia-Pac (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India) and it is a challenge my friend! We need more people working in your field I will be heading to Thailand to launch some projects. I already have a MPH and tons of experience volunteering/working internationally...just keeping my fingers crossed because I am ready to dive in and learn more. Good luck from your schools....its nerve racking!
  20. Hi The rejections are pouring in for me with 3/8 programs saying no, I'm feeling off to a bad start. Has anyone heard from any of the schools I haven't heard from yet?
