  1. Hi Public Health People,

I'm applying for Phds in Epi, Health Behavior and Health Services depending on the program and who I connected with during visits or calls. I did the whole applications thing last year too and it was mid Feb until mid April that I heard back from all my schools. SO, sit tight (siiigh). Do you think the field of Public Health is going to be impacted by the economy (as in will there be more people returning to school that have tons of experience etc?)

  2. I think the most effective way to do this in a short period of time is to get a book on word prefixes, suffixes, language origins, etc. This is more efficient than just memorizing huge word lists.

I can't remember the title, but when I studied for the SAT I had a great book that discussed all the language origins of many english words. Once you get these down, guessing is quite easy. (Most "learned" words are not really English at all.)

Also try something like Verbal Advantage. It's much easier to read than the dry lists printed in Kaplans, Princeton, etc.

Thanks. I have been looking at the root words and it seems everytime I go to apply it, It happens to be the "exception"-Go figure! There is a book that was recommended to me called Word Power Made Easy that seems to be pretty good and I have been using online flash cards and Kaplans Vocab in a box. Thanks for the tip

  3. Yes you certainly can! But GET STUDYING!

I improved my verbal score from 590 to 690 with a lot of vocab studying. I took a Princeton Review course, and memorized every damn word they gave me. Most of the verbal section is vocab, even if it doesn't seem like it, so studying words till they're coming out of your ears is really worth it. Pick up one of the review books -- again, Princeton Review is best, as they base their vocab on the actual test and what words come up often -- and study study study till test time.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for the words of encouragement rinneron...i'll bite the bullet and see how far I can get!

  4. Hi All,

I decided to retake the GRE in order to try to get above my 430 score into a more respectable score. I am content with my Q score at 720 and am worried that is going to fall. I took it Dec 07 and am scheduled to take it again Jan 15, 08. I keep reading things that since the V section is based on Vocab, its really hard to improve your score in this section. Has Anyone raised their verbal significantly and if so how?

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

  5. Hello Everyone! It's application time again and already I am dreading the long process and waiting. Thought it would be nice to know who's out there applying for PhD's for Fall 09 to share the misery with and of course support each other. I'm in International/Global health and am re-applying with hopes of a better school for this year. I've decided to try my luck at the GRE again  in hopes to raise my verbal score.

    Good Luck to everyone!

  6. Hi Everyone--

I need some advice. I've been rejected at all the schools I applied to except one which is my bottom choice that I applied to on a whim. That said, they are not promising funding and do not have skilled faculty in my area of concentration. SO, i have 2 questions....

    1) Does anyone know someone who has transferred from a PhD program in public health to another and if so, was it hard and were they transfering to a better school or an equal school ranking-wise? Is it normally frowned upon to do this?

    2) Do you think that going anywhere is better than nowhere...I know it depends on my career goals yah-dah-yah-dah but a PhD is my career goal. I am in contact with the admission commitees to try to see what happened. I am just having a hard time deciding if waiting another year to **Maybe** get in somewhere I want to be is worth it or not.

Any ideas or words of wisdom are much appreciated:)

  7. Angrawa, I spoke with the UW Health Services PhD department last week. They apologized for the delay, and said I was on the waitlist and should receive my letter this week. I think this means that I was on the waitlist and now am officially rejected. I assume you'll receive a letter this week too. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I got my rejection letter today in the mail from UW and an interview request at BU. Since I am in Seattle, UW was my first choice :( but I'll see what happens to BU

  8. I haven't heard anything from Harvard yet either but I am applying to Socio-medical sciences. I don't have any other offers so far, so I guess I am not in a rush to find out.

I have been working closely with a prof and UW Seattle (by far my first choice) for about a year and was hoping he would be advocating for my admission. I had a "hallway" meeting with him today and asked him what else I could do to strengthen my apps....he didnt seem to be that interested in the conversation. I'm a little bummed that I have been researching with him for a year and teaching a class, taking a class etc. while working full time in another town and he hasnt been pushing my apps.

Has anyone else heard from UW health Services PhD?

  9. Do you know if the U Washington-Seattle conducts interviews for the Health Services PhD? Thanks!

P.S. I don't think Public Health fits in the gov forum either. I'd create an independent Public Health category

I had a phone interview, but it was one of these that caught me off guard...8:00am, pre coffee, and I had no idea they were calling :? I think it went ok, although i wasnt my usual chatty self

  10. OP - Just curious when you heard from Minnesota; I'm still waiting to hear from them.

I third the sentiment that public health doesn't fit under the umbrella of Life Sciences.

Hi, For those of you wondering about U Minn, I got my denial letter--let's see--it was the first one so I think early last week or the week before

Hope this helps, I am going under the assumption (based on nothing but making me feel hopeful) that denials come earlier and acceptances later (or at least you are waitlised).

But, I know every school has their own process...

    Good luck all :!:

  11. FWIW, I know someone who was accepted at Harvard (Population & International Health, in HSPH), Johns Hopkins (International Health) and University of Washington (Health Services) on Friday.

For those of you who applied to Harvard Health Policy, did you have interviews? I know that at least one person interviewed with the management track, but I am desperately hoping that is by concentration rather than program wide.

    Hi,

So your friend for UW health services was at the PhD Level? Whoo man, That is my first choice (nail bite, nail bite)

  12. Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I am looking at strenghtening primary health services for developing countries (i.e. making programs stronger to increase access for marginalized populations) but essential medicines in developing countries is a pet project of mine with my current job. I work helping blood cancer patients find medicine and resources in LCD/Lower-Income Countries. Right now, I am working at the global level specializing in Asia-Pac (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India) and it is a challenge my friend! We need more people working in your field :) I will be heading to Thailand to launch some projects.

I already have a MPH and tons of experience volunteering/working internationally...just keeping my fingers crossed because I am ready to dive in and learn more.

Good luck from your schools....its nerve racking!

  13. Hi

The rejections are pouring in for me with 3/8 programs saying no, I'm feeling off to a bad start. Has anyone heard from any of the schools I haven't heard from yet? I'm leaving overseas for work in Mid April to Mid August and would love to know when and if I am starting school in the fall.

Waiting: U Chicago-Illinois, Harvard, Columbia, BU, U Washington Seattle

Rejected: Tulane, U Minn, U Washington Bio-cultural Anthro program

    Good Luck!
