  1. Hi, everyone I applied several industrial engineering/operations research/operations management PhD for Fall 2017. So far I have one offer from University of Calgary, PhD in Operations & Supply Chain Management with 4 years financial support. I also have another offer from University of Central Florida, PhD in Industrial Engineering, two professors there are actively asking me to join their research group with RA position guaranteed. This is a tough decision for me. Suppose I am planning to pursue academia job, 1) Would a business OM/SCM PhD degree from Calgary B-school (Haskayne) help me to get a faculty position in USA (that's right I want to work in USA)? 2) Does a PhD in industrial engineering from UCF prevent me from find any faculty position in USA? I understand that for a PhD, we shouldn't look the school ranking too much and eventually your research publication will speaks for you. But I need to hear some other opinion. Basically I got a bachelor degree in business administration and a master in IE and another master in pure OR, I am ok to work on some relatively soft research in B-school as well as technical stuff in engineering school. The advisors from both Calgary and UCF all match my research interest. Any thought is welcome! Please, thank you!
  2. Thanks for the comments, my target is not top 10 universities, what I care more is whether the faculty's research fit my interest... So I will try to do something to minimize the damage of my GPA...
  3. Hi everyone I am currently in first year master student in Industrial Engineering in states. I wanna apply PhD in the incoming December, but...my GPA right now is not very high, only 3.56.... My bachelor degree is business so switching to engineering at first is very challenging to me. I worked hard and try to make up my background in business in order to get chance for PhD admission. But...stochastic process is really hard, I got B and B+ for two stochastic process related courses and do not know what to do know. Does anyone know how committee evaluate GPA when it comes to PhD application? Some professor in my school say if you don't have 3.8 or higher GPA don't even think about to get in some TOP 20 Industrial Engineering Program, so I am kinda upset after hearing this. This summer I will work with a faculty in my school to do a related research, does this help? If anyone would like to share their experience or give me some constructive/insightful comments and suggestions I will be much appreciate it. Thank you!
  4. I am currently working on a mixed integer programming application and heuristics, it's alo related to supply chain optimization I am pursuing my master in Arizona State University, does it matter? Many people will think it's easy to get 4.0 GPA but that's not true...at least not in my case. Thanks for your suggestion if you have any
  5. Hi everyone I am currently in first year master student in Industrial Engineering in states. I wanna apply PhD in the incoming December, but...my GPA right now is not very high, only 3.56.... I messed up some courses, does anyone know how committee evaluate GPA when it comes to PhD application? Some professor say if you don't have 3.8 or higher GPA don't even think about to get in some TOP 20 Industrial Engineering Program, so I am kinda upset after hearing this. This summer I will work with a faculty in my school to do a MIP related research, does this help? And my previous GRE is not very high as well, only 145 in the verbal part and 3.0 in the analytical writing, math is 170 but I think everyone gets that score. If anyone would like to share their experience or give me some constructive/insightful comments and suggestions I will be much appreciate it. Thank you!
  6. Though I got another admission from UIC today, I think I'll go to ASU too. I do have one deficiency, which is Stochastic Operations Research, because I change major from business to industrial engineering. Currently I am reviewing Hillier & Liebemann for the incoming test on Aug 19. Thanks your advice, I'll look up those CS courses via Coursera. I hope I can conquer the information system course. Do you mind telling me your research interest? Other than IS, I actually have interest in OR, PSL, and Industrial statistics track. Maybe I should decide my interest after first year...
  7. Hello, Thanks for your reply. I don't have any funding, I think funding is giving to PhD only, at least for many research-based universities. After I saw your comments I might choose ASU to start with my master degree, in addition, I hope I could find some IE internship at Phoenix city... Just a little bit worried about the information system courses, since I don't have any computer science background, but ASU requires to take at least one information course. Anyway, are you going to ASU as well?
  8. Hi everyone, I am an international student and have been admitted to the following MS industrial engineering programs University of Texas Dallas (MS Supply Chain) New Jersey Institute of Technology Oregon State University Arizona State University University of Houston I am thinking finding jobs in the field of operations research or supply chain analysis, could anyone give me some insights and comments? Thanks.
