To inform the McGill stat: I think they aim for about 27 students in a class but we had 31 students back in the fall (... 29 now).

Hey treaclemineroad, is it common for students to drop out of the program? Did they realize the program wasn't for them, or was it more due to extenuating circumstances?

  2. Hey everyone, I know that Dalhousie is really slow at updating the application summary progress, and mine only has the application fee listed (everything else is empty). I'm wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?

Or, if your summary is complete, when did you submit the application/how long did it take to update?

    Thanks!

  3. See the link below.  It is not a distance program.  It's an on-campus program.  You take 5 courses each semester. Two semesters.

I would do some research on what the grad schools are needing for their prerequisites. I did take the 1 year certificate at Brock because my undergrad is in an unrelated field. It definitely helped me aquire most of the prerequisites; however I was still missing one for U of Alberta (which I could take online through Athabasca U) and I didn't have all the prerequisites for UBC.

Thank you, Persis and OntarioSLP! :)

  4. Hey!

Has anyone else's Dalhousie Application status been changed to decision made, yet has not received notification of the decision?

If you log into the dalhousie admissions website and click your submitted application under processed applications, you should see a table called application data where you'll see your application status.

Mine says Decision Made, with Written Notification to Follow, which I assume means declined, haha.

    Same here!

A huge huuuuge congratulations to all those who were accepted/waitlisted! For those of you still waiting (myself included), don't lose hope - your perseverance will pay off, and I believe that's what will make you an excellent clinician one day. :)

  5. . I think anytime you're on a wait list your chances are very good. I'm sure a lot of people applied also because it's a really good program with a solid reputation, not just as backup. Is it the first time they have 56 spots?

I personally did not apply because it's too far from me but I wish I couldve.

U of A has always had 56-58 spots!

I got accepted to Dal by email on March 13th but it still has to be approved by the Faculty of Grad Studies. Good luck to everyone waiting!

Long time lurker, I got into Dal on March 13th as well. It's actually Dal that has the smallest program in Canada, they take 24 SLP students. That along with it having the best clinical placements and most clinical education are why it's my top choice. There's an article on the SAC website that reviewed Canadian programs and Dal was the only one that didn't report any problems finding placements, and you get nearly twice the hours as other schools.

Good luck to those hearing back!

Congratulations, shleew & Archie15! :) Would you be willing to send me your stats in a PM as well?

  6. Thank you!! Has anyone else heard from Alberta today? I emailed them asking a question this morning and they responded shortly after. And now, like 6 hours later I get an email saying I'm wait listed. Find it weird that no one else has posted here yet about hearing from Alberta today! Also, judging by the email she sent me it sounds like all of the acceptances have gone out now?

Congrats on the waitlist spot, sab236! :) I'm starting to lose a lot of hope for U of A - I thought I had the greatest chance of getting accepted there out of all the schools I applied to, especially since I made my sGPA quite competitive since the last round, and got a lot more experiences. At this point, I'm bracing for my 3rd rejection from them, and wonder if this is the universe's way of telling me that SLP just isn't meant for me.

  7. I'm not sure about what they told wuglife, but my general understanding is that they usually do more than one round of acceptances. So I think some more people will hear before April 7th. Especially because they know the majority of acceptances come out April 1st, and that people need time to decide which school they want to attend. I think the April 7th date is when they start accepting people off of the waitlist if anyone turns down an acceptance. That's what I assume anyway! If anyone gets clarification about this from Alberta please let us know! :)

Does anyone know when Dalhousie normally starts sending out acceptances? And if they send it by email or mail?

Thanks for this information, sab236! I was also wondering about this. :)

  8. My hopes for McGill are also not high. I'm mostly still holding out for the second round of acceptances from Alberta! Is anyone else dying of anxiety?? I keep checking this thread and my email way too often.

Me and you both, sab236! So guilty of constantly stalking this forum, they should give out an award for that haha ;)

Has anyone heard anything back from Alberta since last Tuesday? I really wish all the schools had a set date for acceptances like ORPAS!

  9. I just got my official acceptance to UofA!!!!! I am SO happy  :D  This is my second year applying and it is such a relief to finally receive some good news!! It will make the wait until April 1st a lot less stressful! I wish everyone the best of luck

Just got an acceptance letter from U of A. Good luck to you all <3

I just got an acceptance email from U of A too! I'm beyond thrilled! Congrats to everyone else who was accepted and good luck to everyone else who is still waiting!

Congratulations, guys!! :) I can't believe U of A is sending out acceptances so early this year :o

Would it be possible for you to share your stats, if you don't mind?

  10. I'm pretty sure they didn't receive my GRE scores last year until early February because I wrote it really late. I ended up getting waitlisted last year but I honestly don't think it effected my chances at all! My sGPA was lower last year and I knew my chances of getting in were pretty slim so I was happy with being waitlisted... I wouldn't worry about it  you could always send them an email about it though if you are concerned!

They emailed me after the deadline and said they hadn't received my GRE scores even though I also sent them in December. They let me send them again and said it was no problem. They also told me in a separate email that they accept missing documents after the deadline. I wouldn't worry!

Could just be the date they got around to inputing it in the system, maybe?? I wouldn't worry too much about that... I'm sure you're fine.

I'm STILL waiting for anything (confirmation email, changes to my online appllication, anything!). Starting to stress...Even though I know the website says it may take up to 5 weeks.

Ah, thanks for the reassurance! It made me feel a lot better. I was just worried that it would make me look like a "tardy" applicant.

@penelope46, I hope you hear back soon/within the next week! :)

  11. I mailed mine Dec 29th. Maybe they are going through the applications alphabetically to make sure everyone has everything sent in?

I wouldn't worry too much about it. They said they would contact anyone if they were missing documents to give them a chance to resubmit. And considering the fact that they definitely looked at my application and saw that my GRE scores were missing and still have not updated my online checklist shows that they just aren't updating the checklists.

I really don't wanna wait until April to find out!

Some of my documents were taken from last year's application, some were sent in early December and I dropped my resume and additional information form off in person on January 15th!

My GRE was sent in October when I wrote the exam. Everything else was sent mid December.

Thank you for letting me know!! Fingers crossed that I hear back from Dalhousie soon!

  12. Mine still hasn't updated. They just emailed me to say they hadn't received my GRE scores. So I'm assuming if you're missing anything they will most likely contact you this week.

I received an email on Wednesday from Dal letting me know they had received all my documents and they also updated my online application that day.

Mine has not been updated at all but I received an email from them saying that they had received all of my materials.

May I ask when you sent your documents in? I sent mine in well before the 15th, and I haven't heard anything from them. It's making me quite stressed!

  13. Hey students who have applied to U of A, I have questions regarding my application. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a degree in Modern Languages through the University of Saskatchewan. My GPA was not very competitive for this graduate program (3.3 ish). I then made the move to the States to complete a bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders. Since coming down, I've maintained a 4.0 average and will have 40 hours of clinical experience upon graduation. I completed most of my prerequisite courses here as well. I'm stressed about my cumulative GPA, which is currently a 3.527. My last 60 credit unit GPA, however, is a 4.0 and my prerequisite GPA is also competitive. I will have two undergraduate degrees and have a lot of exposure to the field of SLP since making the move to the states. If anyone has any input, I would love to hear it!

Hi jillybean, I am in a similar situation as you: my GPA from my first bachelor's degree was not very competitive, but my 2nd bachelor's degree is. U of A only looks at your last 60 credits + prereq courses, and NOT the cumulative GPA, so I'd say don't stress out too much about it  :) a 4.0 is MORE than competitive!

  14. Does anyone know where i can take the U of T prerequisite courses?

This is what it says on their pre-req page:

"Athabasca University offers all of our required pre-requisites via distance education, with the exception of phonetics.  The link can be found on our website at http://www.slp.utoronto.ca/admissions/prerequisites/athabasca/

The University of Alberta offers an online phonetics course (LING 205: PHONETICS). To find out more information http://www.registrarsoffice.ualberta.ca/en/SpecialRegistrations/OpenStudies.aspx"

    Hope this helps.

  15. I am still on the fence about applying to a few schools. I know that McGill is very research-based & Alberta is quite clinical-focused. Does anyone have some insights into what the programs at Toronto, Western Ontario, or Dalhousie are like?

    Thanks in advance! :)

Oh, and just thought I'd update anyone that's interested in applying to U of A - just checked their website, and the applications have been pushed back AGAIN. Looks like we can't start the online application until December now. I wonder how this might affect their Jan. 15th deadline...
