  1. Hi gradcafe friends,

I'm a first-year Marketing Ph.D. student at BU, and we are recruiting new Ph.D. students this year. My department recommended that we share information about our program in places on the internet we used to check when applying, so... here we are smile.png I just went through the application madness last year (I applied to both psychology and marketing programs),and I would be happy to share my experiences and answer the questions I can, both about BU and the general process last year.

    Deadline is Jan 11.

This is a general overview: www.bu.edu/questrom/files/2015/11/Questrom_Factsheets_Marketing_Final.pdf

    Best of luck to everyone!

  2. In my opinion, most marketing professor jobs are in business schools and, being b-schools, people have to adhere to accreditation requirement. Many b-schools in the U.S. prefer to recruit professors with degrees from AACSB-accredited schools. I think this is one of the reason why a psychology degree suffers in terms of job prospects, as psychology departments never bear b-school accreditation. So your psychology friends are absolutely right that psychology PhDs can also apply for marketing job but your job prospects in marketing will actually be very limited. As of now, new marketing PhDs are still placing very well in both the U.S. and E.U., as the shortage for business professors are still happening. I did my master's in psychology and had to switch to marketing. I don't have much information on current psychology placements siutation though.

That is helpful. Thank you! :)

  3. Angua,

First of all, thank you for your insights! Secondly, here's a question that may be useful to applicants in my position.

What are your thoughts on the job prospects of people who come out of this process with a marketing Ph.D. for marketing professor jobs versus those who come out with a psychology Ph.D. for psychology professor jobs? My psychology friends recommend staying under the psychology degree name (they say psych is more flexible as a degree, meaning I can apply for marketing jobs with a psych degree), and my marketing friends recommend the marketing name (they say the marketing research field is suffering less than psych in terms of jobs and it's easier to get a marketing position with a marketing degree). Is it basically just better to do a joint program if interests overlap?

  4. Hi! I did that a few years ago (mostly psych and OB, but some marketing). I don't have much to share, except that business schools tend to make decisions much later than psych programs, so try not to stress!  And good luck!

Hi there! Thank you for reaching out! :) Did you find it difficult to explain, when asked about the programs you're applying to, that your interests overlap enough to fit both? Or have you found it common that people apply to both psych and business programs?

  5. Hi, internet!

I'm an applicant to both marketing and social psychology Ph.D. programs. I haven't heard much at all about marketing interview invites yet, so I wanted to reach out. Let's update each other about we hear in the upcoming month or so!

  6. Hi. I've gotten an email about two weeks ago from my POI at the Cognition, perception and development division. From the email he said that they've invited several people. But I assume that they are talking about just their division--Cornell has several divisions within the psych department I think. So if you haven't heard from your POI, it might be that they are still reviewing apps! Hope this helps :)

Also, if the person who got an interview from Upenn could PM me your POI, I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you very much, and congratulations on your accomplishments so far! I'm in the social concentration, so it's a bit of a relief :)

  7. I received an R&R for a first-author paper, and I contacted both the graduate admissions coordinator of each program and my POIs (I've had contact with them previously). Some graduate coordinators were able to update my file, some were not. Some POIs replied (nicely), some haven't replied. I asked my advisor, and he said it doesn't hurt.

  8. Someone posted on the results page about having a phone interview for USC (Social Psychology).

"Had phone interview. Professor believes Social Psych interview day is Jan 30. He hopes that the social psychology group will extend interview invitations in a week or two."

If you are that someone, would you mind telling me who is your POI? Did you already receive an early formal interview e-mail or were you being interviewed via phone under special circumstances?

  9. I've applied to the same program and haven't heard anything yet either, if that puts your mind at rest. I did see someone on the results page posting that they had a phone interview though. Don't know if you saw that? Apparently invites are being sent out next week!

Seeing that post on that results page made we want to begin this thread. It started worrying me that someone already has had an interview via phone.

  10. I don't know if anyone else got this, but I got an email saying "We have reviewed your application for admission to graduate study, and are unable to proceed because of important transcripts missing from your application file.". Probably because I hadn't sent it yet :(.

does this mean I might still have a chance, if it's not a rejection email? Could it mean that I even might get an interview possibly if they receive the documents?

I don't know :( With an application to a different school (NOT USC), I received an e-mail (from the grad portal, not the department itself) saying that they wanted another version of my transcripts (official instead of unofficial) scanned and uploaded. Their deadline was Dec 1st, and I uploaded a new one on the Dec 5th - I was still able to upload it. It didn't come with any messages about the likelihood of moving forward with my application review though.

If I was you, I would call the department. What's missing? Can you make a good case for why?

  11. I specifically asked about social-personality, and the response didn't specify. my guess is all divisions, though.

I am also a social-personality applicant to UCB, so here's a high-five for our disappointment. Thank you very much for letting us know about your inquiry! It's nice to have some closure.
