I haven't gotten an Arizona rejection yet. It could be because my last name starts with W...but more likely it's just that there is fierce debate about how much $$$ they are going to offer me
-
I also just got an Emory rejection. Wasn't high on my list, and if I end up at Georgia State I think I can take a class or two there anyways...perhaps that's some consolation.
-
My last name starts with W, so I guess I have another day or two until I get rejected

Anyone doing anything via the postal service does seem strange, especially for their initial notification.

I have a quick question for those that have applied multiple times, or who did an MA then went on to PhD. Did you have to resubmit GRE scores, or did the schools keep them on file (assuming you were happy with your score the first time through)? Thanks guys.
-
Wow that's so awesome! Congratulations.

I just think we have fundamentally different attitudes about how serious this process is for the applicants. This is their future and will chart the course for their whole life, and each application costs in excess of 100 dollars. Applicants deserve respect and a timely response, and I didn't expect that in a forum full of applicants, such a statement would be received with such dismissive condescension. But whatever. I'm not going to have an argument on here lol. I'll leave further departures from mainstream attitudes to dfindley.

I don't think I'm being crazy for saying that if one isn't accepted, and one isn't waitlisted...then one is rejected and given that we spend a hundred dollars per application, I think we have at least bought the right to know what our status is as soon as it is determined. If they haven't decided yet then of course that's fine, but if there is a pile of rejected applications with no chance of waitlist just sitting somewhere but the school just refuses to notify the applicants, that seems like a textbook example of disrespect. And we know this is probably true, since so many applicants inquire about their status and receive it by email, before the notices go out. And we know some schools don't even let rejections know before April 15. I just think they should let us know as soon as they know, and an increase in status requests will likely speed up the process, which is good for everyone. Of course, any such emails would be as courteous and respectful as possible.

Did you apply pretty broadly?

Possible Glass Ceiling for Applicants with MAs
philstudent1991 replied to MApplicant's topic in Philosophy
I'm curious as to how this forum perceives the top 5 or so MA programs. What are they? The ones that immediately come to mind are Tufts, Brandeis, Georgia State, UW Milwaukee, Houston and UMSL. Are there any other programs that might be candidates for the top 5? -
I just don't think so. UNC sent out rejections almost immediately, and yet I doubt that their organization is radically different from anyone else's.
-
I think people should start bombarding departments asking about rejections. That may give them incentive to just go ahead and release them. I'm definitely talking about Berkeley, Duke, UCSD, Riverside, Vanderbilt, Arizona, maybe Chicago, and many others. Surely at least some places will tell inquirers they have been rejected, and then we can safely assume our rejection from those places as well. I think we should use our numbers to actually be in power for once, not helpless lemmings waiting for those ad comms that don't respect us to wait till April just to reject us.
-
Thanks!

Also, anyone know what's up with Vanderbilt? They've done an acceptance or two but I think that's it, so if anyone has info on that I'd be interested to know!
-
It feels good not to get rejected by Notre Dame. I mean, I didn't apply there...but it's nice not to feel rejected anyways.
-
That's what I have read about UCSD...any idea if all the offers have gone out?
-
When I started this process I was hoping for like 2-3 offers. Now I'm like....just one waitlist and I'll be happy.
-
I know that GSU will notify everyone by the first week of March, acceptances, waitlists and rejections, according to an email they sent out today.
-
For anyone interested Georgia State sent out an email saying not to expect decisions until at least February 26. Also I can't believe this week has been so dead

Favorite philosopher/philosophers?
philstudent1991 replied to greencoloredpencil's topic in Philosophy
I'm not a big Swinburne fan, but his work got me interested in philosophy so for that he will always have a special place in my heart lol. -
what is fairclouds prediction on Georgia state?? cuz if I don't at least get in there....I am done.
-
myself. couldn't even get accepted to grad school.
-
Ok, but if this were the case wouldn't there still be some rejections? The people that didn't make any list at all?
-
So why is it that they accept and wait list but don't reject the rest? If they were going to reject people wouldn't they just do it? I know they have no immediate reason to, but it would presumably speed up the process of everyone finding their spot, which may help their admits get sorted out and thus help them, and it would also prevent the countless emails they must get "hey have you made all the offers?!?". So why wouldn't they just reject the remainder unless there was still a chance for them...

I actually don't think Platonist's request is unreasonable. Any benefit he receives would apply toward the next cycle, thus not affecting the sample's original author. The main reason I think it's a reasonable request is because I've thought the exact same thing. I come from a state school where I am the only student applying to grad school in philosophy, and while I think my sample was pretty good, certainly my best work, and my reading professor thought it was good too, I have NO IDEA what the competition is like. I know what GPA and GRE scores look like and that many applicants are from MA programs and top UG schools (right now I feel like they all are), but I have no idea what other samples look like. Splintered mind only features successful SOPs, not writing samples, unless something has changed.
