  1. congratulations!!!
  2. may I ask in favor of what?
  3. I reached my upvote quota otherwise I'd like it! Congratulations buddy that's so awesome!!! You are on track to be a philosopher!!!
  4. I've reached my upvote quota for the day as well (I only liked 1 or 2 things)...but I second or third or fourth the curious fact that I never get out of state wrong number calls ever until this month they have been pouring in
  5. I have no idea what a quality applicant is unfortunately. I have a 4.0 major, 99% verbal, and strong letters, so surely this makes me a quality applicant by just about any metric. And yet, I'm not sure if I'm in the top 100 or not. Some have indicated that something like 50% of applicants are from MA programs. Certainly almost all of them are quality applicants (although 150 applicants from MA programs seems pretty high, assuming 300 applications total). However, I think you are totally right in saying that one shouldn't get too discouraged. For example, the beast that got accepted to I think it was Duke, Riverside and Davis...he will only go to one. So at least one person on two of those waitlists will get in.
  6. that was my first thought as well, of course not to discredit exceptional GRE scores and what must be a strong writing sample
  7. I may be mistaken but I believe Chicago just makes 10 offers or so, no waitlist. So at least it won't be a dragged out thing.
  8. I feel like my whole perspective on this process has changed in the last two weeks. I used to think I'd have an offer or two. Now I'm certain that I won't get in anywhere and will be lucky to be taken by an MA, which is strange since all that has happened was a rejection from UNC, which I have always known was inevitable. Surely that's the essence of the human experience...being a rational being tortured by irrational emotions in an irrational world.
  9. So what are our thoughts on Duke and Berkeley? Have they made all offers and waitlists and are just waiting to send out rejections?
  10. If your options are Boston, NYC and Chicago, the major phil departments on your list are Boston University, Harvard, MIT (Tufts and Brandeis for MA), NYU, Columbia, CUNY, maybe Rochester or Syracuse, Chicago, Loyola...I think that's pretty exhaustive. Of those, University of Chicago stands out as having strengths in continental, but the deadline has passed for this year and it is an incredibly competitive school to get in to.
  11. So plainly true...and yet so profound. Well put
  12. The philosophers will be on the right side of history when the Marxist movement of the immense majority finally washes away inequality and the chains of the laborer are broken at last.
  13. Sure but it is important that this be so, otherwise the radical capitalists would have silenced all the liberals by now, and the religious right would have had all the atheists removed.
  14. damn you are cleaning house with admits
  15. Haha this same thought has been on my mind too. One of my options is law school, as I imagine it is for many of you. However, I'd need to take another year to prep for the LSAT and submit applications, since this year's cycle is already well under way. If I get shut out, on the bright side I will be completely free. I will have no obligations other than to make enough money to keep myself alive. Maybe I can travel
  16. Also got the rejection from UNC. It was a reach of course, and the email was very polite and came in a very timely manner. Couldn't have been a more pleasant rejection lol.
  17. I agree it's a strange thing to say. But what I also note is precisely why waitlists are so important: some people are getting multiple offers and can only accept a maximum of one, so people on waitlists do get in sometimes!
  18. Why inferiority? about what?
  19. That sounds like an incredibly rare circumstance that you'd have so many, but maybe I'm wrong.
  20. 0-3 seems like a high range. Maybe 0-1, with an occasional 2 or 3. Prestigious schools may be overrepresented, and maybe that's where you're from, idk. But if every university had 0-3 there would be thousands of applicants. And I don't think there are...but maybe. :-/
  21. I think I'm in the middle of you two. I wouldn't wholly discredit the a priori, but science absolutely has to be taken account of in modern work on ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, religion, etc. I'm interested in philosophy of biology, so I definitely see a role for science. But philosophy examines values in many cases, and science cannot as of yet say anything about values.
  22. I respect your right to have these sorts of debates if it helps you deal with your angst. I have as much angst as anyone. But I come to these forums to see acceptance results and these conversations make finding actual results a needle in a haystack. Just sayin
  23. Of course it's not random, you are right. But in a discipline like ours where there are so many candidates with 99% GREs and outstanding letters and GPAs, sometimes even the best don't get in, and it comes down to factors like fit and funding, rather than being purely hierarchical. This seems obvious, and I'm not sure why you seem so obsessed with crashing our forum with this argument. Go argue with your own kind.
  24. All it means is you weren't in the very first wave. People need to stop being so depressed about this. There may be more acceptances, and there will be a waitlist to come. I have a friend that goes there and he was so far removed from the process that he was already touring law schools in April when he found out he was in off the waitlist. So you never know.
  25. If I get in, I will probably cry. This is years worth of work and dreams coming to fruition. Or, of course....not
