lol just what I thought as I was reading it

you have to follow a link to an applicant site, from one of the emails they sent me is how I do it. I checked mine yesterday and it wasn't updated, for better or for worse.

If prior results postings are any guide, rejections come more than 2 weeks after initial acceptances :-/

I applied to 13, all very competitive schools (incl 2 MA). I know I might get shut out, despite what in any other field seems like it would be a lock to get in, with 99% GRE scores and 4.0 major and great everything (who doesn't around here it seems). But for me, I didn't want to apply to "safety" schools because I know the job market is even more competitive, and so there's a certain threshold I didn't wanna go below. I think philosophy is intrinsically valuable, but I also want to have a job and make money one day. If I can make money doing philosophy, win win. So if I get shut out, I did my best and tried to make that dream come true and so be it. And if I get in, it'll be to a great school. So, yes, some great candidates will get shut out. I think about that every day.

I think there's no reason to give up hope at all. Firstly, they will likely make more than 4 first round offers. Secondly, since Duke competes with top schools, many if not most of their admits will receive other offers as well, and a good portion will matriculate elsewhere. So there will be a waitlist and more rounds after that.

PHILOSOPHY: Predicted results timeline

He almost certainly meant U Chicago based on their past decision release dates -
I see it. My status on the site still has no result. Hopefully that means I'm waitlisted...probably too early to tell though. Good luck everyone

I think there's definitely a decent chance of Riverside and Duke this week

PHILOSOPHY: Predicted results timeline

very interesting. thanks! -
go up to the top of the page right under thegradcafe.com and click "results search", then type in the school or field.

"Who got in" forum is truly worthless this year. Ya, the OSU posting isn't unreasonable like those Rutgers ones a few weeks ago. I'd like to see another to confirm but no obvious reason to think it's not real! I didn't apply there so I can't confirm anything.

Ya man you're being absurd. Do you really think she is going to read your email and be like "Wow, what an unbelievably rude person," and then strut angrily down the hall to the ad com chair and show him/her your email? At which point, of course, the chair will pull out your application, shaking his head in shame that such a misanthrope had ever even been in the discussion of being admitted, and throw your file into the trash? I really think that if you get rejected...it won't be because of that email lol. I'm not trying to be a jerk because I can relate to your angst lol I'm just pointing out that you're being ridiculous

I agree to a point, and of course professors probably enjoy that time off as well as get caught up on their research and grading. But it seems likely that most professors would have a little bit of downtime, and that some might be pretty curious to see the new batch of applicants. Maybe some get a head start on skimming stats and samples of promising applicants. I think I would...but maybe I'm naïve.

Was it not 12/17 this year as well? I think it was. But regardless, last year could have been a fluke because it was like a month earlier than the prior year.
-
Maybe look into Oregon
-
Ok well maybe no Riverside today. Surely tomorrow lol
-
Maybe you're kidding but that's clearly false if you check postings from last year.
-
I, like some others on here, think tomorrow will be when people start to hear back from PhDs. I think Riverside will make offers tomorrow. I'm contemplating never checking grad café again...because I don't know what's worse....the anxiety of not knowing or the anxiety of thinking (whether true or false) that you know by implied rejection. Ergggg.

How are you guys waiting this out?
philstudent1991 replied to Cottagecheeseman's topic in Philosophy
I don't think they were really related, I think they just chose philosophers names randomly. Season 1 of lost was great but I think it really went off the tracks after that -

What's the first school you might hear back from?

UCR or Duke as well -
do the gre in the summer and dominate it. really research what schools to apply to and don't be an idiot and just apply to the top 10. also don't apply to schools that are unranked or whatever as safeties if you wouldn't go to them. no point applying somewhere you wouldn't go. ask for letters early, and start your sample early. in my case, I made an original sample for the process and had professors review it with comments, a process that I started in maybe September.

anyone know how many phd programs there are in philosophy in the us? I've seen 99 on a ranking on certaindoubts and I didn't see anyone obvious left off at a cursory look...any thoughts?

I think Washington University in St. Louis does.
