I still have 4/8 applications to go. I'm waiting for comments on my second writing sample from a professor.
-
Sorry if this is late. I just said University support and put ? for the funding next to it. Should be ok.
-
Thanks! I just thought it'd be lame to say "well I read a lot of philosophy of language over the internet during the summer."
-
Hi everyone. NYU is asking me for my research experience in linguistics, but my only research experience (if that can be considered research) is research to write my honors thesis on semantics, which is 100% theoretical. I just read up on the literature and wrote a reply. I didn't do any lab experiments or anything.
3/6 credits of my honors thesis in my school are used for research, but does theoretical stuff count?

I have a grand total of 5 recommendation letters, a 1200 word SOP and 2 writing samples for MIT. I wonder if it's overkill
-
To ask you for interviews and tell you if you got admitted.
I gave them my American mobile number, but I almost always keep my mobile on airplane mode, and I'll be overseas for a good portion of the winter. Should I stop keeping my phone on airplane mode?
-
Haha it's a delicate balance. We'll see how nice I am come February
I know I won't be nice to anyone if I don't get in MIT regardless of where else I get into, that's for sure :<
-
Maybe we shouldn't wish each other good luck
But you're very nice, so good luck!

I've only submitted an app to Michigan so far (it was due on December 7). The rest are all due between December 14-January 2.. stressful to a paragraph for each school while at the same time working on two writing samples and a final exam. T_T
-
Omg it's a miracle! She sent a really nice reply just the night before I was going to skip class. I'm still skipping class to see her though.
-
Or you could just leave your class early/go later and go to her office hours. It's not like its the end of the world to miss a bit of class.
We're currently revising for the final exam so it's pretty important for me to go. But yeah, her office hours and my class start at the same time, but they're the buildings are nearby and I doubt I'll talk to her for too long, so I'll only miss like half an hour or so in total of my 1 hour 15 minute class as long as no one beats me to her office hours. I just hope she doesn't say no. *fingers crossed*
-
I agree too. I just don't like to bother people in general when it's not their office hours, I think that's worse than emailing them.
-
Thanks fuzzy. I'm gonna have to skip class to go see her on Tuesday.
Did she already agree to write you a letter or are you just asking her now?
Because if its the latter, asking a prof for the first time to write you a LOR by email is a bit ridiculous if you are still attending the university IMO.
It's not ridiculous at all (my other professors didn't mind when I asked them by email either). In her case, it's even more acceptable, I can't see her in person at all this semester because I have a class during her office hours and she's well known to be really busy. I can't just go to her office whenever I want either, THAT would be rude.
-
Hi everyone. I emailed a professor asking for a LOR two weeks ago (I forwarded it to her again a week ago) but I haven't gotten a response yet. I really need one from this particular professor, and my application will be a lot weaker without her influence. And it's hard for me to see her in person because I have a class during her office hours.
What do you guys suggest I should do? Is it possible she hates me now and just won't reply just to be a jerk? Should I skip class and see her during her office hours? I'm scared she'll say no and it'll be really embarrassing. I have other letter writers I can go to in that case, but in any case, it's kinda rude not to reply to someone for 2 weeks (and counting).
-
Still. No. Reply. T_T I'm starting to get scared for my future.
-
Because it's a post that doesn't contribute anything other than being a jerky thing to say online to someone you don't know.
I love it when people take it upon themselves to claim what others are actually doing or thinking. Thank you, but I can speak for myself, and that wasn't the reaction I had.
It wasn't meant to be jerky to him. Rather more jerky towards his education than anything else. Every philosophy department should make that book a required reading for some required course.
Oh no, I did read it a few times before. It's just that it's been a few months since I read it for the last time (actually, it was in 2012), so I decided to read it all over again. Same thing for Plato's Theaetetus.
Sorry, I got the implicature that you hadn't read it before. I felt like you would've made that stronger claim if you were following the cooperative principle and the maxim of quantity.
-
A professor I really need a recommendation letter keeps ignoring my emails. *sigh* And her office hours are when I have classes.
-
I'm really really surprised you hadn't read it before...
-
The easy answer would be for me to just go out and date as much as possible and find someone to get me pregnant ASAP and pray they want to marry me, or find someone who wants to rush as much as I do (I did that actually and he treats me kind of bad, but still holds marriage and babies over my head so I still try).
To be honest, this sounds really unhealthy--especially the bolded part. I'd be scared shitless to date someone like this. If you really want to get married I think you have to work on reducing your obsession with marriage. Very few guys would want to rush as much as you do, and they'd feel really creeped out.
-
I see, so it's only after getting accepted that schools want it mailed? Thanks.
-
When some schools say you should upload your official transcript, do they mean you should scan it and attach a PDF of it?
Do all grad schools not require mailing them an official transcript?
Thanks.
-
Bring it up you talk to his wife without asking. She might just offer to do it.
-
Ok, I'll send the GRE scores in a couple weeks (2 weeks before I apply).
Does anyone know when to send the transcripts? How soon before the deadline? Does this vary from school to school?
-
Do you guys know how long it takes schools to get GRE scores? I'm gonna apply around mid-November and the deadlines of the schools I'm applying to are around December 15-January 1. Would this give enough time for the December 15 schools?
Would it be possible to wait to send my transcripts until my grades for this semester are out? (This will be around December 15 too..) I guess I'll have to send the transcripts without this semester's grades to these schools.

Oh, something's been bothering me. How many professors do you guys mention in your SOPs for each university? I mention at least 4 people I could work with for each based on what they research or what they have done research on in the past. For Harvard and NYU I have something like 5 and for MIT I named 9 professors I could work with.
