  1. Can you ask for an extension? If not you must decide and if you back out legally they could make you pay for that first semester. Unlikely but still a possibility and there would be nothing you could do. Most likely they will give you more time though.

Thanks! I think I would ask them for an extension.

  2. Just got accepted to Oxford :)

After 12 rejections, I almost lost hope...

Anybody else got accepted? Feel free to PM me.

Oxford! So cool! Congratulations, Alterman!  :D

Makes me shudder to think I only applied to three universities. Didn't have the resources to apply to more and didn't apply to any of the 'prestige' programs but only three still feels like madness!

  3. April 15th is the absolute earliest that a grad program can ask you to make a decision. Some others choose to have later dates, but you cannot be required to give a program an answer before the 15th.

Hmm..but one of my programs is asking me to make a decision by the end of March. Feeling under pressure. :(

  4. I'm glad I joined Gradcafe! It has been and continues to be a great experience.

At times the other applicants' overwhelmingly good grades/GRE/publications/research experiences scared me out of my wits! But at times the people around here soothed me with their comforting words.

Most importantly, Gradcafe helped me keep my chin up, even when the people around me (and sometimes in my own head I, myself) told me otherwise.

  5. Don't panic - 2/3 acceptances is awesome. I hope you find out about funding soon! It's so nerve racking to finally be in but have to wait to finish up all those final details.

    Thanks, strudelle!

Waiting for news on funding is totally nerve wrecking! Especially with everyone around me asking questions all the time. Am I in? If yes then when and where am I going? What does it mean I can't say anything until April? If I'm in I'm in, right?

So hard to make everyone understand!

  6. Same thing here: they didn't tell me until I contacted them, and evidently had made their decision several weeks earlier. It left me wondering when they were planning on telling me.

When I contacted them they told me there may be some delay with out of country mail. That's why I didn't get mine.

If I hadn't contacted them I would've been hanging on for weeks to come. I'm glad that's over with!

  7. Contacted Washington University in St. Louis and received an email of rejection. Nearly 120 applicants to the Department of Anthropology, all extremely promising candidates cannot be admitted; etc, etc.

Ah well! For a newbie, who before June 2013 didn't even think of applying, getting two acceptances is pretty good, if I do say so myself.
  8. Oof. I could handle getting rejected by Caltech - that was expected - but WUSTL really hurt. They were my first choice, the department was really exciting, and I really thought I had a good chance of getting in. So much for that. Now I'm looking at getting rejected everywhere, since both Rice and A&M have been slow getting back to me.

Ah well. I'll just go cry into my ice cream and start work on my applications for next year.

WUSTL also rejected me, even though we're not from the same program. :(

  9. Well, that's the last of'em! Contacted Washington University in St. Louis and received an email of rejection. Nearly 120 applicants to the Department of Anthropology, all extremely promising candidates cannot be admitted; etc, etc.

Ah well! For a newbie, who before June 2013 didn't even think of applying, getting two acceptances out of three is not too shabby, if I do say so myself.

Now, if only fundings would work out, I would have absolutely nothing to complain about!  :)
  10. A little help and advice required! Anyone around here got any information on UARK? More specifically the Department of Anthropology Sociocultural track?

Any information even about UARK in general would be greatly welcome. PM me, please! Thanks in advance! :)

  11. I would not be surprised if the proportion of internationals on the Grad Cafe was significantly larger than in the general applicant pool. Many internationals fully depend on information from sources like the Grad Cafe as we simply have nowhere else to turn for information on US grad school applications.

I can't speak for others but know I am here for exactly this reason. Sitting here thousands of miles away I have little option but to depend on places like Gradcafe for information. At least it takes away some of my 'fear of the unknown'.

  12. What's everyone's advice on contacting a school if your partner got in and you're waiting for word? Thinking something like: I'm really excited to work with you and the school remains my top choice. In addition I'm excited about moving there b/c my partner was admitted to this other program there.

    Good, helpful, harmful, neutral?

I don't know how it works with our programs, but my SO is applying to medical school and they definitely encourage those sorts of emails because they know graduate/professional schools are a huge, long-term commitment and want couples/families to stay together. If it were I, I would definitely write to them with that kind of information.

Sounds really good! I think it's good for the university to know that you are very interested, and I think that adds bonus points.

While waiting on funding on one particular university (and news from the other schools that I've applied to), should I mention the fact that I have family near the university? That is one of the many reasons why I'm still considering going there.

  13. Letter from the Director of Graduate Studies of UARK informing me that my application for admissions has been favorably reviewed by the Admissions and Funding Committee. But for MA, not PhD.

They will contact about funding opportunities later.

Oh well, I suppose it's better than nothing. At least it wasn't an outright rejection.

ETA: Funny thing happened while I was submitting my result here at the Gradcafe. My GRE Verbal and Quantitative results got switched accidentally. Now people will think I suck at English! Sigh!
  14. denied admission to the PhD program at Chicago, but offered the MA in Latin American Studies at half tuition.  Im excited now!!

It will be a battle between Georgetown and Chicago, but I really want to work with a prof. at Chicago, so that will probably tilt the scale, especially if I get no FA from Georgetown.

Admitted to UCR with a very good funding offer!

I've now heard back from all my schools- admitted and funded to 4 of 5.

Good luck to all still waiting! Even from my end, this process seems anarchic. I have many many friends with more qualifications than I who haven't gotten in anywhere yet... I'm baffled.

Great news, Forsaken & Khannnn! Congratulations to both of you. :)

  15. Now, I'm not so upset about waiting - in my mind, not being rejected yet means they are still deliberating, and I am still in the running. It's like Schrödinger's cat, except I want to believe the cat is alive until proven dead.

    That's so very apt!

  16. I will ask them for sure but still... moving to another country for yet another Master's at 30 with dependents without a tangible funding and without the guarantee for PhD...ummm.. lots of factors :)

I'm on the same boat. I'm an international applicant. I've got MSS and reaching my late 20's. If I don't get funding for a PhD I can't move to another country. :-(
