  1. Honestly, your resume sounds fantastic! I had zero research experience and was accepted to both Western and UBC (didn't apply anywhere else so I can't say for the other programs) and focused on my volunteer work and serving job in my LOI. It's definitely possible to get in without research experience. Good luck!
  2. I agree, two programs I applied to specifically requested us to explain any discrepancies in our application. Even if a school didn't ask you, I feel like they would be able to see weaknesses anyway and since you have a chance to be able to explain your story in your LOI, why not?
  3. Liking your courses isn't the only way to connect to SLP! Did you work with an SLP? Was there a case that you found particularly interesting? How about your work experiences and volunteer experiences? I talked about growing up with English as second language and how that taught me the importance of communicative skills. I also talked about working as a server and how I developed interpersonal and social skills as a result. I wrote about my volunteer work with underprivileged children and seniors, and discussed how their goals were different, albeit important all the same. You can approach this question with many different angles - trust me, I didn't love all every single course I had to take in order to apply to SLP, but I still believe it's the right career choice for me! I wrote: The challenge of my studies was intensified by my father's job loss in first year, which necessitated that I split my time between school and work. I never explicitly said I had a low GPA; however, I alluded to the fact that a family mishap was the cause. This technique was suggested to me by a professor on the admissions committee because 1) it takes up less space and 2) it's a clever use of syntax. Hope this helps!
  4. It's good that you know now before you apply! I was in this situation last year but with Toronto. Sometime between August and December they changed the physiology requirement, which rendered me ineligible to apply. I didn't think to check their site during first semester because I figured they wouldn't change the requirements that late... boy was I wrong. I found out over Christmas break as I was finishing up applications and had to pull mine last minute.. I was pretty rattled!
  5. Do you mean signed off by a supervisor/coordinator etc.? I didn't submit anything of the sort. ORPAS gives you an option of inputting an approximate number of hours you've spent at each volunteer/work site but I don't think they ask for verification.
  6. I agree with what everyone is saying - within each admissions committee, each member has their own ideals of what a candidate should have. One of my profs is on the adcom at Western and she told me point blank that what she looks for is a strong clinical reference, because she believes that is the strongest predictor in a good future clinician. She also pointed out that another member on the committee values high grades over everything else. For Western at least, each member is given a stack of applications and they rotate through, then meet together to discuss who is going to get admission, wait-list or rejection. I'm sure at Toronto, and other schools, the process is very similar!
  7. I received acceptance off the wait list at UBC today! Anyone waiting on Western - the line will be moving soon! Excited to meet you DeafAudi! I have another question (if you don't mind) - what exactly does "submit in writing" mean? I accepted verbally with Sue - can I just email her? I feel silly but I don't want to mess this up.
  8. DeafAudi, I was wondering when the deadline to respond to UBC is?
  9. Hey guys! Just wanted to extend a congratulations to everyone that was accepted and waitlisted the past couple of days. I also received an acceptance to Western, so for now, it looks like I'll be heading there although I am still holding out for acceptance off the wait list at UBC. I wish I could hug every one of you that didn't get in - I had a few friends that applied to SLP and one to audiology and they were all rejected. Please please please please don't give up. The world needs more compassionate people, and it truly is inspiring to see all of these people applying 2-3-4 times before finally reading that admission letter. You can make it possible!! I am a first-time applicant and if you would like to know my stats, extracurriculars, and how I approached the application, feel free to PM me. The beauty of these online forums is that you have a wealth of knowledge from past and present applicants - use it! I know I contacted anyone and everyone that had a link to SLP to ask for advice, and used it to tweak my application. Best of luck to everyone that is still waiting for decisions! I'm super excited to meet you guys next year!
  10. I can play the keyboard if you want. Or the baritone. That's what I did in highschool.
  11. VancitySLP, I received a waitlist offer as well, but they didn't tell me how many people were on it. That's not as bad as Western's 70-people-long list though! There's still hope for us yet. I think for me it boiled down to the adcom not accepting one of my courses as a valid prereq. They're suggesting that I enroll in the course at Athabasca instead. Has anyone had any experience with Athabasca? And for those who applied last year, is there any hope for the UBC waitlist? Thanks in advance.
  12. Hahaha aw your story made me smile! I think there's something really special about receiving an acceptance phone call rather than an email so it's too bad they have to change it now, but given these weird imposter people I guess it's understandable. I think you probably were the last person she contacted - I forgot to say this but she mentioned that they will no longer be accepting confirmation of enrollment over phone.
  13. Just called Sue at UBC and asked if all acceptances had been sent out. She said she was still waiting on decisions from the admissions committee and that we should be receiving something via email/mail soon. I was confused because I know in previous years UBC has called people and when I asked, Sue said that apparently this year she did call someone who pretended to be someone they were not. Crazy eh! I guess the hope is still alive!
  14. DeafAudi, Thanks for the reassurance and congrats on your acceptance! I've been contemplating calling Sue for the past couple of days but holding onto this last bit of hope is all thats keeping me going right now!
  15. Does anyone know if UBC sent out all the acceptances at once? Feeling a little defeated Also, for those who applied to McGill - my friend just called the office and they said all decisions should be out by tomorrow..
  16. Hey everyone! I've been following the forums for about a year now, and I must say - the anxiety I felt last year reading about all the acceptances/waitlist/rejections is nothing compared to what I feel now that I'm actually going through the process haha. I'm pulling for UBC as well - VancitySLP I hope we hear back soon!! Best of luck to all those waiting to hear back from McGill, Dal and U of A! It really is no fun when they only give you a ballpark figure on when they'll give notice.. at this point I just want to know so the constant feeling of nausea subsides...
