  1. Formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free During my higher formal education, I met students with different views about learning: that was, either read to understand or read to excel during examinations. The latter of these views is a result of a formal education system that requires students to acquire a vast amount of knowledge within a short time. Thus, the way students respond to these conditions tends to restrain their minds and spirits. Firstly, formal education encourages rote memorization. Students are expected to learn certain topics and concepts within a short time range, and then are made to take examinations. Most times, students are not able to have thorough understanding of these topics, and thus in fear of examinations they take to memorization of lecture materials, and notes. Therefore, it is sometimes normal to ask students about topics they took a semester ago, and they find it difficult to recall even minute details. This is one of the minds restraining effect of formal education on students. Furthermore, studies have shown that the formal education system is more rewarding to students that are more obedient to their teachers, and passively agree with everything the teacher says. Smart and creative kids who normally like to think out of the box are seen as rebels most of the time in the classrooms and they end up not doing well in the formal education system. For example, girls are rewarded in the educational system because they are socialized to sit still, play nice and wait to be recognized. In addition, subjects like mathematics, English and the sciences are nowadays given more priority than poetry, music and art. The latter topics have been shown to make kids think creatively and critically from an early age; also, their minds are prepared and exposed to learn more about complex concepts. Furthermore, it can also improve their learning in other areas. For example, music can help a student concentrate when studying mathematics. For me formal education has been helpful, I learnt how to read and write with formal education, it has given me the skill of thinking critically, but my argument is not that this educational system is flawed, it is that in some cases it has some failings that has affected some students adversely without them even knowing. Conclusively, the minds and spirits of students are restrained when they are not able to express themselves in the classroom, and when they have to strive to make good grades in examinations without them having an adequate understanding. any feedback will be helpful

  7. Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. Students should have the freedom to choose, and explore fields of study that are appealing to them. Thus, the role of educational institutions is to train students in fields of their choice, and not actively encourage them to choose fields on the basis of opportunities at lucrative careers. The reasons for these views are as follows: having a lucrative career depends on the individual, and not the field of study; also, changes in government policies and economic stability may render these so called lucrative jobs unavailable. First, and foremost, such a statement creates the notion that some fields of study do not lead students to lucrative careers. Having a successful career depends on the student, what the student makes of the field, and how the student effectively applies learning in the classroom to the real world. There are numerous lucrative areas available within any field of study. For instance, in Nigerian universities, there is a cachet placed on courses like medicine, engineering, and law. However, agricultural students are viewed ludicrously, but many of them are able to start lucrative poultry, and fish rearing businesses before their counterparts get jobs. Furthermore, the continuous availability of these so called lucrative jobs or careers in particular fields of study is not certain. Changes in government policies and economic stability may reduce the presence of these jobs. For example, the effect of the economic recession in countries like Greece, and Portugal has been a lack of jobs, even high paying jobs. In addition, in the Nigerian banking sector, the apex bank implemented a recapitalization policy for banks, these lead to bankers taking pay-cuts and in other cases been let go. Thus, a banking sector once considered lucrative is now less benign. Opponents against my idea argue that educators are helping students make the right decisions for their future careers. However, students should make the decision of what kind of career paths or options they plan to take; if they fancy careers in academic research or want to be lawyers that take pro bono cases or work in the oil industry, it is their choice, a career choice should be one were an individual feels fulfilled. Conclusively, lucrative opportunities are inherent in all fields of study, educators should help students meet their aspirations and not advice them to take particular fields of study because the chances at lucrative careers in such areas are apparent.
  8. thanks.. a lot. Do i still need to get the Manhattan essential and advanced words.
  9. thanks do i have to learn the synonynms and antonyms of these words.
  10. Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. Universities are centres of learning that should produce the “complete” individual for the society. Thus, students should offer courses outside their field of study, for these institutions to get anyway near this. Firstly, requiring students to take these courses will broaden their knowledge. Students are able to relate with thoughts, and ideas outside their field of study; therefore, can interact with individuals from different fields. Also, university graduates are able to appreciate, and grasp the diversities they find in the society. For instance, courses in the humanities or liberal arts would make science major students have an adequate understanding of social topics in literature, arts and history; furthermore, through these courses they know their duties, and obligation to society. Apart from making students vast, it creates academic discourse between students on campus. In taking these interdisciplinary courses, students have different perspectives on a wide range of topics not taught in their specialist fields. And this creates forums in which student can share ideas on. For example, blogs that discuss on different topics taken in different interdisciplinary courses. In addition, taking these extra courses adds value to the individual on graduating. Individuals are empowered with information that may prove useful in their future careers. Graduates with something extra in various workplaces are more favoured for employments, promotions, and self actualization. For example, a science academic who learnt a foreign language, may find it valuable when presenting paper in a different country. Opponents of this idea argue why students should take courses that are not related to their core fields, but they fail to recognise that the barriers between different fields have been lowered. For example, the undertaking of many science projects is dependent on what the needs of the society are; therefore, a good scientist should be in tune with the dynamics of a society. Conclusively, universities are saddled with the task of training students to become complete individuals able to fit into the society, and this can be achieved by requiring them to take courses outside their specialist field.
  11. very insightful.......i am seriously lacking critical thinking.......
  12. thank you am working hard.....not easy. any ideas on how i can get better. @peak performance . materials that can make me improve on my mistakes.
  13. @ peak performance i am not taking the extremes for this issue prompt....... i want to take the middle ground on this issue. although i know my points are few.
  14. yeah i like that idea. Most of the topics are related and thus you find out that some points you use on one essay can help you create supporting points on other essays. for example you issue prompts that centres on universities and colleges, government etc. so do trouble yourself doing all the prompts ( i think), pick specific ones. welll for me i have the problem of creating points to support my positions.........very painful.....it takes me hours....any advice?
  15. Governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition. University education should be accessible by students who meet the requirements, but this fails to be the case because of high tuition fees, and a corresponding myriad of families that cannot afford such fees. Government should implement a policy that will offer free university education to any admitted student who cannot afford tuition. But such a policy must have certain conditions. Government should make sure that only indigent students who meet certain criteria enjoy this free education policy. Government can say that only esurient students admitted with certain scores in their university entrance examinations, and good academic records should benefit from this policy. In Nigeria, the federal government conducts a general test for these students, ferrets out the good ones and put them on scholarships throughout their stay in the university. This helps the government bypass the cost it would have incurred funding a totally free education policy. Furthermore, this policy will give these students the opportunity of achieving something in life. Proponents against this view will argue that such a policy deprives many other indigent students from getting university education. Government funds are limited, and there are other social problems that have to be solved in any country. Thus, private establishments should also help in funding university education for these students. For example, in oil producing areas in Nigeria, oil companies like TOTAL, SHELL BP, and MOBIL give university scholarships to indigent students in communities where they operate. Conclusively, university education is important, as it may be the only chance these students have to live a better life, but it is sad that it is not available to all. Government must continue to try to make university education free for indigent students who meet the mark. Dont rate it, just tell me if the points are coherent and clear. I FIND IT HARD TO CREATE POINTS TO SUPPORT MY POSITION......IT TAKES ME HOURS. ANY ADVICE? THANKS
  16. Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position Most students make the mistake of choosing fields of study because their peers are doing it or due to pressure from their parents. Some then end up not performing well. Therefore, it is paramount that education institutions should dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Firstly, it improves a student academic performance. Students do not perform well in fields that they have little interest. Therefore, educators are saddled with the responsibility of discerning the academic strong, and weak points of individual students, and urge them to take courses they show interest in, thus improving academic performance. For example, an engineering student who gets poor grades, but gets the attention of the class when giving insightful analysis on political, and public policy. Such a student should be in the arts or humanities. Also, teachers become more effective in the classroom. As they work more with students that show interest particular fields, they become motivated to teach. This creates an enabling classroom environment, and an effective teacher-student relationship. For example, a calculus class in which majority of the students have prerequisite knowledge of algebra will make a teacher effective. Proponents against this statement argue that teachers are not working hard on the student. In some exceptional cases, compelling students to study subject-areas that are mundane to them might be efficient, yet some of these students still return to fields they find interesting. Ngozi Adiche, a Nigerian novelist, initially was studying to become a doctor, even with her affinity towards the arts, but a few years later she goes to the United States to study literature. She is now a renowned writer. Finally, education institutions have an important role in producing great individuals for the future, and this is possible only by dissuading students from fields of study that will stymie them reaching their potential. please i did not time myself. am i on the right track and will the essays on test day be from the AWA pools. Thanks
  17. A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. National curriculum guidelines are set-up to guide students in learning through an ordered path, and to allow them go through a step by step learning process, all aimed at making education effective. Based on this, it is paramount that all students study the same national curriculum until they enter college. When students study the same curriculum, the government will have a basis of judging the academic performance of students nationwide. Different curriculums will create confusion, for example, a nation with different states, or provinces, with students studying with different curriculums, will have different administrative education boards, different examination bodies and different teachers with different perspective on how to train students of the nation. These disparities stymies the development of a standard educational system. Also considering that the cost of running these dissimilar curriculums is high, such funds can be channelled into a standard singular curriculum; that will give teachers their required training and fund educational boards. Furthermore, different curriculum stymies national integration, as some students will not be able seek education in other parts of the nation and it will mitigate academic discourse between students. They will grow up having an obscure knowledge of other cultures and ethnic groups in the same country. Nigeria is made up of a muslim North and a Christian South and whose official language is English and has over 400, indigenous languages, imagine the government allowing courses taken in the North to be in Arabic or the native Hausa language. In conclusion, for a nation to have a properly educated young generation that will solve future problems of a nation, the students must study the same national curriculum. please check it out .am i on the right track. will the ETS set questions from the pools of issue and argument task on test day

  19. hello Decaf i like your essay, it looks coherent, but I am not an expert and i still have problems with the analytical writing. Please i need someone to check my issue essay out. Just tell me if i am on the right path, and also what i need to improve.I am not perfect. 'All results of publicly funded scientific studies should be made available to the general public free of charge.Scientific journals that charge a subscription or newsstand price are profiting unfairly' Write an essay in which you take a position on the statement above.in developing and supporting your view point, consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true. Government funded scientific studies are suppose to produce results that will create a positive impact in the different sectors of the country’s economy, and also be of benefit to the general public. But the latter can’t be possible when results of publicly funded science projects are not made available to the general public at a free charge, and scientific journals that contain these informations are charging a subscription and profiting unfairly. Proponents against this argument will say, “no knowledge is for free”, but they fail to remember that majority of these funds are from taxpayers, and also not making these information free reduces interest in the sciences and withholds useful snippets from the general public. First and foremost, taxpayers’ money makes up majority of the funds used in most scientific studies. It is very unfair that they have to pay extra to get these useful informations. Taxpayers should earn the reward of their money, as it is in other endeavours in which Government use public funds. For example, public funds are used to provide scholarships for Americans going to college, public funds are used to create social amenities like roads, pipe-borne water, and low cost housing. Why then can’t this be replicated with the results of scientific studies? Furthermore, making the results free of charge will allow the general public have easy access to these useful informations, and will create a keen interest in the sciences. Most people feel that science is a boring and intricate subject, but if these journals are made available , these researches and results can be presented in a pellucid manner. Even, a young child may be lucky to see a journal published by NASA, with the spacecraft and shuttles, and have an interest in becoming an astronaut in the future. Apart from creating a keen interest of our young minds in the sciences, results of scientific studies in areas like health will be very useful to the public. For example, results of researches on ways to reduce high-blood pressure and obesity can get to majority of the public, if this journals that contain them are made are made available to the public at a free charge. In conclusion, i believe making these results free to the public will be helpful on the long-run , as it will help in enlightening the general public on the convoluting world of science. This can only be mitigated by not making the results available for free, and scientific journals continuing making unfair profit on subscriptions.
