  1. I can't wait to start!

    My classes are:

Organizational, Community and Societal Structures and Processes (3cr)

Field instruction and field seminar (3 cr)

Interpersonal practice with individuals, families and small groups (3cr)

Intro to community organization, management, and policy/evaluation practice (3cr)

Geographic information systems (GIS) for social workers (1cr)

Grassroots community organizing environmental justice (1cr)

As of right now, all of my reading is being posted online, or can be found in the library, so I wont have to buy any books unless I want them for future reference.

  2. I'm starting the program this fall, and first of all I would say don't get too stressed out about it! I did, and in hindsight there was no need. Make sure your resume and personal statement are concise and clearly explain what you want out of the program and what you want to do with your MSW (even if you aren't 100% sure, make it seem like you are). Try to apply as early as possible, and give your references enough time to have their letters prepared. I think as long as you have a decent GPA and a great personal statement you will be fine as it seems like you have some good experience.

If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

  3.  Thank you!  I'm so excited, I was rejected last year so it's awesome that after a year of hard work I turned things around!

Congrats on UofM!  I'm from Michigan and have always heard amazing things about their program too!

Thanks! I was very close to applying to UW because of their dual MSU/MPH program (and I've always wanted to live in Seattle) but decided against paying out of state tuition.

  4. I asked my recommenders to let me know if/when they call. The wait is killing me (not as bad as waiting for admission). I interviewed for the career services GSSA, and I really liked the woman who interviewed me. It would be awesome to get to work for her.

  5. Hi all,

I have been invited to interview for a Graduate Student Staff Assistant position in the Office of Student Services. I have honestly never had an interview this important before, and although I'm confident in my abilities, I'm NERVOUS.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what types of questions they will ask? Also, how does one typically dress for an interview like this? Obviously professionally, but do I need a suit, or will a dress shirt/tie suffice?

Any additionally input/advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

I was told columbia gets 110 applicants for about 8 and U Chicago according to last years stats kn their website gets 110 for 6. At 20% U Michigan is not the most selective phd social work program by a long shot. I would imagine it is Berkeley followed by WashU, Chicago, Columbia, and Penn.

When I went to the MSW/PhD info session they said they accept 4, but not really an amount for how many apply. UMich does a duel PhD program (MSW and either econ, psych, sociology, anthro, poly sci).

  7. Heres a tip that I found VERY useful when I applied to MSW programs: START EARLY. I began working on my applications for MSW Fall 2014 the summer before (May-August 2014). This gives you plenty of time to secure recommenders, craft and revise an excellent personal statement, send it transcripts, and complete whatever else you need to for specific program (scholarship letters, etc.) Also, a lot of schools have rolling admissions, so by starting your applications early and getting them in ASAP, you will tend to hear back sooner rather than later. The longer you wait to submit an application, the more stressful it will be. Obviously if you are waiting for another semester to improve your GPA, there isn't much you can do about that.

From what I know, there aren't any current databases that have admissions info for MSW programs. I would focus on the schools you want to go to and ask them directly, or try to find it on their website (it might take some searching). From my experience, and what I have read, most MSW programs aren't highly competitive compared to others grad programs.

  8. Anything publishedd regardless of when would help...I'm guessing a bit here. When it comes to publication, all PhD programmes are interested in them. I was really scared I would not get in without one, but amazingly I did. I'm guessing you would be interested in U Mich? They're the most prestigious and selective if the PhD programmes, admission rate of 20%. In the end, it's a combination of writing and experience. I think my international work helped tremendously, so if you're able to do peace corps or the like, it probably helps a lot.

Ideally UMich would be my top choice after my MSW, but I realize my chances would be very slim. I plan on getting some experience after getting my MSW, so I have time. Thanks for the insight!

  9. Are publications from undergrad acceptable, or are they more interested in publications from your MSW? I have one publication as a psychology student (BS) and have presented at several state and national conferences.

  10. I recently heard a great rule of thumb... Only take out as much in student loans, as you make in a year.  Not sure how accurate that is, or if it applies to you, but thought I'd pass it along.

    :)

I've heard this too, but I honestly don't see how thats possible for everyone in social work. I like to think of student loans as "good debt" if you believe in such a thing. I read a Forbes article about it... made me feel better...
