  1. I can't wait to start! My classes are: Organizational, Community and Societal Structures and Processes (3cr) Field instruction and field seminar (3 cr) Interpersonal practice with individuals, families and small groups (3cr) Intro to community organization, management, and policy/evaluation practice (3cr) Geographic information systems (GIS) for social workers (1cr) Grassroots community organizing environmental justice (1cr) As of right now, all of my reading is being posted online, or can be found in the library, so I wont have to buy any books unless I want them for future reference.
  2. I'm starting the program this fall, and first of all I would say don't get too stressed out about it! I did, and in hindsight there was no need. Make sure your resume and personal statement are concise and clearly explain what you want out of the program and what you want to do with your MSW (even if you aren't 100% sure, make it seem like you are). Try to apply as early as possible, and give your references enough time to have their letters prepared. I think as long as you have a decent GPA and a great personal statement you will be fine as it seems like you have some good experience. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.
  3. I "attended" the virtual open house, and they said that they were finalizing decisions and notices would follow soon after. I'm guessing sometime next week.
  4. It is nice being towards the end of the process. What is your concentration if you don't mind me asking?
  5. It took me about a month or so after being admitted to hear back about scholarships. I would try to contact the department and ask them directly.
  6. Thanks! I was very close to applying to UW because of their dual MSU/MPH program (and I've always wanted to live in Seattle) but decided against paying out of state tuition.
  7. I asked my recommenders to let me know if/when they call. The wait is killing me (not as bad as waiting for admission). I interviewed for the career services GSSA, and I really liked the woman who interviewed me. It would be awesome to get to work for her.
  8. You are able to change your program length. Under the admitted students tab there are instructions on how to do it. I'm actually considering doing the opposite of you.
  9. Has everyone interviewed? I was told that we would be hearing relatively soon about their decision!
  10. Admissions selectivity really has nothing to do with how good a program is, which is (IMO) what should be more of a consideration than selectivity.
  11. When will you be interviewing? Mine is tomorrow!
  12. I applied to both, and I believe I'm interviewing for Career Services. Good luck to you!
  13. I'll be attending UMich in the fall if you want to pm me with any questions.
  14. Hi all, I have been invited to interview for a Graduate Student Staff Assistant position in the Office of Student Services. I have honestly never had an interview this important before, and although I'm confident in my abilities, I'm NERVOUS. Does anyone have any ideas as to what types of questions they will ask? Also, how does one typically dress for an interview like this? Obviously professionally, but do I need a suit, or will a dress shirt/tie suffice? Any additionally input/advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
  15. Just received an invitation to interview for a GSSA position!
  16. When I went to the MSW/PhD info session they said they accept 4, but not really an amount for how many apply. UMich does a duel PhD program (MSW and either econ, psych, sociology, anthro, poly sci).
  17. Will anyone be "attending" the virtual open house on March 28th?
  18. Heres a tip that I found VERY useful when I applied to MSW programs: START EARLY. I began working on my applications for MSW Fall 2014 the summer before (May-August 2014). This gives you plenty of time to secure recommenders, craft and revise an excellent personal statement, send it transcripts, and complete whatever else you need to for specific program (scholarship letters, etc.) Also, a lot of schools have rolling admissions, so by starting your applications early and getting them in ASAP, you will tend to hear back sooner rather than later. The longer you wait to submit an application, the more stressful it will be. Obviously if you are waiting for another semester to improve your GPA, there isn't much you can do about that. From what I know, there aren't any current databases that have admissions info for MSW programs. I would focus on the schools you want to go to and ask them directly, or try to find it on their website (it might take some searching). From my experience, and what I have read, most MSW programs aren't highly competitive compared to others grad programs.
  19. Ideally UMich would be my top choice after my MSW, but I realize my chances would be very slim. I plan on getting some experience after getting my MSW, so I have time. Thanks for the insight!
  20. Are publications from undergrad acceptable, or are they more interested in publications from your MSW? I have one publication as a psychology student (BS) and have presented at several state and national conferences.
  21. I'm interested in eventually going on to get my PhD. Would anyone mind sharing their GRE scores, and maybe something's that made. your application stand out?
  22. I've only heard from fin aid from the SSW, not the university yet. Thanks for posting their response!
  23. I've heard this too, but I honestly don't see how thats possible for everyone in social work. I like to think of student loans as "good debt" if you believe in such a thing. I read a Forbes article about it... made me feel better...
