Is it okay to contact my school?
U-M_Detroiter replied to ImagineLennon's topic in Social Workers Forum
I don't think there is any harm in contacting them as long as you are polite about it. I contacted Michigan several weeks before my acceptance, but all they could tell me was that I was guaranteed a decision statement by March 1st. -
Congrats! What is your concentration?

I am starting my MSW program next year concentrating in Social Policy and Evaluation in the practice area of health. I am wondering if anyone can give me some insight on the amount of jobs that would be available to me after graduation, and maybe what kind of jobs there are for people interested in Policy. Ultimately, I would love to get a job as a policy analyst (health policy if possible) or a researcher. I am passionate about access to affordable healthcare and advocating for disease prevention, as well as research on how these topics affect the poor. I will be attending school in Michigan, but I am not bound to the state after graduation. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

University of Michigan MSW Fall 2014 applicants!

Well the good news is that they must let you know by March 1st, so if worst comes to worst, only a little over a month to go! I feel that you may hear back relatively soon though, as you only applied about a month after I did. What is your concentration? Best of luck! -
Reputation of MSW programs in Michigan?
U-M_Detroiter replied to ProspectiveMSW's topic in Social Workers Forum
I have heard that prestige only matters if you're going into the Macro field. I graduate from Eastern in April, and can say that from the little experience I've had with the social work department (Im a psych/bio major) they are very welcoming and care about you succeeding. From conversations I have had with several social work professors, EMU's program is better suited to someone wanting to work part time during the program, and individuals who had a BSW (although you can apply without having one). I know their concentrations are limited, but I personally think we have a great group of professors. Wayne State's program is more practice based (as is Eastern's) than Michigan's or Western's program. Meaning they focus more on what you learn in the field more than social work theories. From my visits to WSU, it is very obvious that they have a passion for working in and around the city of Detroit, so if inner-city social work is something you're interested in I would check them out. They are also close to several hospitals and therefore have quality health social work field placements. Also, Michigan, MSU and Wayne State were just recognized as one of the top tier research colleges in the country, so if you're interested in social work research, I would consider checking out MSU or Wayne State. -

I feel the same! I'm still on a very high level of excitement. -
I recently got into U-M and Wayne States MSW program for fall 2014. I am a psychology/biology major at Eastern and my gpa is a 3.5. I think knowing what you want to do, and having good experiences will definitely help you get in more than a good GPA. For example, I will be concentrating in social policy and evaluation in health, and the experience I have that relates to that is working on the Obama campaign in 2012, volunteered for the American cancer society, and fit kids 360. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

I used my genreral email address (an outlook account) for my application, but I don't remember how exactly I signed up for wolverine access. Sorry! I would email IT or the SSW. They are typically pretty good about emailing right back. -

Thanks! It was for the MSW program. I applied the week the application opened (Mid September I think?). I found out via the new/prospective student page on wolverine access. A "view decision" link popped up. It said my official acceptance letter will be emailed to me shortly. -

I'm also interested to know if it was everything you thought it would be. Anything you would do differently? Also, are there things that should definitely be taken advantage of while in the program? -
Hi all, I would like to use this forum to try and connect with others that have applied to the UMich MSW/PHD program, or those that are already in the program. I submitted my application the end of September. Does anyone know how long it takes to hear back? It's driving me crazy! I got into my second choice school, but UMich is by far my number one choice. I plan on concentrating in social policy and evaluation, possibly minor in human resources, with a focus on health. Also, if anyone has gone through/or are in the MSW program, how is it?! What are your classes and field placements like?

How rigorous has your MSW program been?
U-M_Detroiter replied to LittleDarlings's topic in Social Workers Forum
Obviously academics are very important in an MSW program, but how would you rank: academics, networking, field work, as most important and least important? -
I am also considering doing the same thing at Michigan. I am interested in social/health policy as it relates to cancer patients. I am still contemplating it because after talking to an advisor at UMich, she said that I will be able to take several public health classes over my MSW course that I would take in an MPH program. From what I've heard from others, the job outlook is relatively the same even with both degrees. Although, at UMich, you get an internship in each program, which could increase your chances of getting a great job, I would assume.

Waiting is seriously awful.

Congrats!

I started my application materials in the summer because I heard horror stories of not being able to get materials around in time, and consequentially missing the deadlines. I started early and still had problems with one of my LOR's. I can't imagine having to do applications now on top of taking on a full course load!
