  1. So many things to consider.. Anyway, I also think GradPad is the best option, at least for a while, but finding a guarantor is not easy.. My idea here is talking with some people from my future lab first, maybe I can find something with their help, or not, I don't know..
  2. I guess I will arrive one or two weeks before October 4th and try to find something then..
  3. I guess private housing is cheaper but after years sharing flats I would like to live quietly in my own studio. However, grad housing (aka GradPad) is really expensive and that rule of paying the whole thing in advance is a huge drawback.
  4. If you decide to go to Geneva, feel free to PM me
  5. I wouldn't worry about French in Geneva. It is pretty much an international city and you can definitely survive there knowing just a few basic stuf (of course it would be better learning French and there a lot of free/cheap French classes there). I do not know that much about your field, but there are loads of opportunities in Geneva for people like you (most in English). UN, ILO, WHO, zillions of NGO's..
  6. Guys, have you already sorted out accommodation?
  7. Hey guys, So, I am starting my PhD at Imperial College (Deparment of Chemistry) on October and I was wondering how much money you can earn as a TA and how these things work there or in the UK in general (I am not from the UK, so don't know much about it). Many thanks!
  8. organic.. have you been accepted into UNC as well?
  9. I have just got accepted at UNC (official acceptance to follow).
  10. I have received this note earlier today. Apparently, they don't accept TOEIC, so the only remaining option is IELTS.

    New York, NY

I am in a similar position. I've been accepted to both NYU (full funding + external funding of $1700) and Imperial College London (only external funding of £1700). I should be probably just fine in NYC, but I am worried about London, mainly because I would prefer go to Imperial under normal conditions but these financial matters are killing me.
  12. I've got an offer from Imperial on the 17th of January and I've applied in early November.
  13. Are you going? They offer to pay all my travel expenses but I don't know if I accept this.. I am afraid of making a commitment in accepting the offer and I am not ready to make it,,
  14. May I ask what else did they say about funding? I am waiting for the official letter..
  15. Both with funding, but I guess in NY I could get some extra funding and in London I would struggle to pay my bills.
  16. Hi guys, I know that this is pretty much subjective and, in the end, I will have to make a decision based in whatever I believe is more relevant for my future. Meanwhile, may I ask your opinion? I was accepted to pursue my PhD in both my first options, NYU and Imperial College. I am a Brazilian pharmacist by training, doing a MSc in organic chemistry. My dream is to work as a drug discovery scientist in a pharma company. However, I am also thinking about academia and becoming a professor. Living in either NY and London would be amazing. NY has more sunny days and is easier to get cheaper flights to Brazil from there. London is an amazing city and Imperial is always among the 10 best universities in the world. Both are freaking expensive. In summary, both cities and universities have up and downsides and I am completely undecided.
  17. Indeed, I am a bit worried about that.. I have already applied for U Michigan, UNC, NYU and I am still wondering about Colorado State University. Lets see how it goes..
  18. Indeed, one of my problems is that a huge quantity of groups are focusing in chemical biology now and I really want to do synthesis.. Anyway, thanks guys!!
  19. Thanks DTB In fact, I am only applying to UNC because I really think that I have a chance due to mutual research interest (natural products or small molecules synthesis and new reaction discovery). I am still struggling to find more programs though. Do you have any suggestion?
  20. Hey guys, I am a Brazilian doing a MSc in organic chemistry (with a bachelor degree in pharmacy) and I want to apply for a org chem PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (I am also looking at some UK based universities). My stats are: GPA: we don't use a 4.0 scale in my university, so it is hard to say.. but I have really good grades and was ranked among the top five outstanding students that have graduated wth me.. And so far, I have got only straight A's in my Msc TOEFL: 104 GRE: 161V; 162Q, 3.0AW Experience: 5 years of undergrad and independent research experience in the field (organic synthesis, molecular modelling, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry), 6-month internship in Switzerland in a R&D organization, 6-month internship in a pharma company. Pubs: 2 published papers, both first author (one in portuguese and the other, in english, I wrote with great scientists in the field) Scholarship: Science without Borders scholarship, provided by the Brazilian government. So, my first question is if I am not aiming to high with UNC Chapel Hill, based solely on my stats. The second question, that it is not a question to be frank, is if anyone can help me find more universities that I would have a chance to be admitted (I know, this is a very broad topic, but I would appreciate any advice) Thanks
