  1. So many things to consider..

Anyway, I also think GradPad is the best option, at least for a while, but finding a guarantor is not easy..

My idea here is talking with some people from my future lab first, maybe I can find something with their help, or not, I don't know..

  2. I wouldn't worry about French in Geneva. It is pretty much an international city and you can definitely survive there knowing just a few basic stuf (of course it would be better learning French and there a lot of free/cheap French classes there).

I do not know that much about your field, but there are loads of opportunities in Geneva for people like you (most in English). UN, ILO, WHO, zillions of NGO's..

  3. I am in a similar position. I've been accepted to both NYU (full funding + external funding of $1700) and Imperial College London (only external funding of £1700).  I should be probably just fine in NYC, but I am worried about London, mainly because I would prefer go to Imperial under normal conditions but these financial matters are killing me.

  4. Hi guys,

I know that this is pretty much subjective and, in the end, I will have to make a decision based in whatever I believe is more relevant for my future.

Meanwhile, may I ask your opinion?

I was accepted to pursue my PhD in both my first options, NYU and Imperial College.

I am a Brazilian pharmacist by training, doing a MSc in organic chemistry. My dream is to work as a drug discovery scientist in a pharma company. However, I am also thinking about academia and becoming a professor.

Living in either NY and London would be amazing. NY has more sunny days and is easier to get cheaper flights to Brazil from there. London is an amazing city and Imperial is always among the 10 best universities in the world. Both are freaking expensive.

In summary, both cities and universities have up and downsides and I am completely undecided.

  5. I think you will find natural product synthesis and new reaction discovery are common research topics in a lot of synthetic groups. You can check out Organic Links for a comprehensive listing of all "Organic Chemistry" groups in the United States. Keep in mind some of these groups might be more physical organic or chemical biology-based in their direction as opposed to synthesis.

Indeed, one of my problems is that a huge quantity of groups are focusing in chemical biology now and I really want to do synthesis..

    Anyway, thanks guys!!

  6. Thanks DTB

In fact, I am only applying to UNC because I really think that I have a chance due to mutual research interest (natural products or small molecules synthesis and new reaction discovery).

I am still struggling to find more programs though. Do you have any suggestion?

  7. Hey guys,

I am a Brazilian doing a MSc in organic chemistry (with a bachelor degree in pharmacy) and I want to apply for a org chem PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (I am also looking at some UK based universities).

    My stats are:

GPA: we don't use a 4.0 scale in my university, so it is hard to say.. but I have really good grades and was ranked among the top five outstanding students that have graduated wth me.. And so far, I have got only straight A's in my Msc

    TOEFL: 104

    GRE: 161V; 162Q, 3.0AW

Experience: 5 years of undergrad and independent research experience in the field (organic synthesis, molecular modelling, pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry), 6-month internship in Switzerland in a R&D organization, 6-month internship in a pharma company.

Pubs: 2 published papers, both first author (one in portuguese and the other, in english, I wrote with great scientists in the field)

Scholarship: Science without Borders scholarship, provided by the Brazilian government.

So, my first question is if I am not aiming to high with UNC Chapel Hill, based solely on my stats.

The second question, that it is not a question to be frank, is if anyone can help me find more universities that I would have a chance to be admitted (I know, this is a very broad topic, but I would appreciate any advice)

    Thanks
